Maybe the closest they have as peers are the likes of Maybeshewill or And So I Watch You From Afar but even they don’t play it this hard, with such sustained aggression, for so long.

‘Pagan’ launches the album with a riff so intense it’s like being hit in the face with a mallet, but in a good way. Just as I was thinking ‘oh, it’s a Post Metal album’ off they jump it to something completely different and then before you can draw breath we’re back to the first riffs, and now something else entirely. It’s like Frank Zappa joined Metallica, that sort of febrile imagination applied to the raw power of a juggernaut. Mind blowing.

And on it goes from there, each subsequent track trying to up the violence quota, time changes, odd chordings and twitchiness on what has gone before. It was here, one winter, in a damp pub cellar, that the legendary producer, Craig Leon, first auditioned the band. Whisking them off across town to the leafy and gentile environs of St John s Wood, they cut their debut album in Abbey Road s infamous studio 2. But London was not their calling. They set off, touring Europe, gigging the major cities - Paris, Barcelona, Lisbon, Zurich, Berlin and Rome - and feverishly playing all the towns in between as if in search of another home. Returning from a show in Prague at the dead end of 2010 they got the call. How about Christmas in Italy? Well naturally. Wasn t it here that the great English Romantic poets chose to winter? But this wasn t to be a time of hibernation for the Cesarians. Though they had found a home away from the London snow, in the shadow of the Apennine, they also found a studio. And as England dozed, fed up with it s bland seasonal faire, The Cesarians were cooking. The result: A blistering new five track EP that the moves from the brooding menace of In Your House to the orchestrated and opiated haze (and highs) of I m With God . It screams and blasphemes with Clash like savagery in the anthemic Worst Thing then redeems it s self sweetly with the sad melody of School Yard and the lonely poetry of Questa e lei . Sure, it had some hard hitting riffs and ambient, moody soundscapes throughout, but also melodic, catchy synthesizer melodies aplenty. However, new EP DNA is decidedly darker. There s an energy brooding below the surface of the music that shows glimpses of its teeth, but never revealing its full snarl thus creating a moody, clandestine atmosphere. You could be forgiven for wanting to adopt a James Bond villain persona whilst listening to this. Whilst the emphasis on the electronics and synthesizer has been increased, guitar still plays a key part in the music, as evidenced by opening track Rooko . After just a few bars of what sounds like some sort of intergalactic communique, Aucan cut through the air with a menacing guitar riff, with an almost metal tone to it. The layered electronics really fill up the background here, mixing well with the pounding beats delivered by Dario Dasseno, to generate a wonderfully textured counter-rhythm, fusing together the static shrieks of modern music with the raw energy of the indefatigable acoustic drum kit. The bongo like drums of Urano (from their previous LP) are revisited in Urano 2 , which also continues the guitar theme, but unlike their older work, Aucan are happy to restrain their output. The screaming guitar riffs that ripped the airwaves apart on the first incarnation of Urano are no longer present. Instead, there s a hint of minimalism to be found in the repetitive, chugging guitar, keeping pace with the intricate drumming, and building up towards the climax that, which once would have been chords and distortion, is replaced by solid beats, shifting and syncopating their way through crystal shards of synthesizer. In somewhat of a surprise for Aucan, vocals make their appearance on the title track, DNA . Long, drawn out and layered, it sounds almost like a tribal procession for robots. It could well be a funeral, with the almost indecipherable voices calling and crying out, carrying an emotion that is almost unexpected of a primarily instrumental rock band. It is more likely that closing track The Darkest Light , clocking in at 15 minutes of ambient, minimalist noise, is no surprise. Whilst fitting in with the ambient feel of the record, it s certainly nowhere near as exciting as any of the other tracks.

hazel-rah-the-africantape-ep-10-record-the-edges-of-the-cover-have-very-light-wear-from-shipping-to-stickfigure
Hazel-Rah – The Africantape EP 10" record - the edges of the cover have very light wear from shipping to Stickfigure

Hazel-Rah – The Africantape EP 10" record - the edges of the cover have very light wear from shipping to Stickfigure

Tim Byrnes moved to New York City in the fall of 1998 to study music at New York University. Video Musics III: Floating Oceans is a 38-minute stop-motion animation video opera based on the works of the early 20th century Irish writer Lord Dunsany, and inspired by the time and dream experiments of the Irish physicist John William Dunne. The piece is dedicated to Flann O'Brien. Video Musics III: Floating Oceans contrasts the vivid dreams of its poet-protagonist with the foreboding routine of pedestrian life. Parts operate under the tow of dream logic. All dialogue and narration are expressed through lyrics and music performed live in front of the projected video. Originally recorded between 1994-1997 in various New York establishments, the record stems from fourteen hours of previously unreleased material which band percussionist, Kevin Shea, had hanging around. It's easy to imagine how the trio construct their compositions: in the most loosely banded and improvisational manner possible; escaping in jaunts through insanity and ecstatic pleasure. All recorded live at various times, there's little production to speak of, rather, we experience the 'real' band in their weird and frantic mania accompanied by background conversation, and sometimes inspired by it (see 'Cigarettes'). Gaugh croons in deep growls to swooning cabaret, off-set by sax lilts, bass laments and percussive impulses. Their style shuns accepted boundaries of form, entirely motivated by improvised interplay. At its spine there is a fulcrum of sense to cling to where all other aspects hang from in the most spurious circumstances; sometimes piano led, sometimes bass. It can be difficult to grasp specific motifs which repeat, instead the mood and atmosphere becomes the prominent facet, allowing the reactionary conversation between percussion and vocal to jar and clash. The record essentially exists without a recognisable pulse in the beat, which to some may be alienating, yet after a recalibration becomes a fascinating relationship. There's simply a different entry point into the record compared to more conventional constructions. The exposure of percussion as a voice seems to create vivid images that complement the vocal, and 'show' us an aspect which isn't at all familiar." - The Four Oh Five

Electric Electric – Discipline CD

Electric Electric is a french trio composed of looped and live guitars, drums, and electronics.
The band was created in 2005 and played many shows in France and Europe. As, to my ears, a drawn out relationship review, that translation fits: Ventura’s nine songs on this album do a tour of inflictions between one and another, and this does track through that stylistic shift (which I appreciate), but when the music should be swelling, it feels more diluted. This is partially preference, but also in the “warmth” with which the album is produced, which moreso favors the harder rock and shoegaze of the B-side, but is also what makes the more paced explorations on the A-side feel more emotionally penetrative, as the group feels almost trapped in their compositions and the recording, and that struggle is an amazing component. The relative release of the remainder of the tracks feels a bit more like normal indie rock by comparison.

But where we start: oh, man, this is gold. I’m reminded of the kind of restraint of something like Codeine, though I don’t mean to suggest that Ultima Necat is slowcore, at all. It’s a rather broad sound, though it is rooted in that era, swinging through guitar noise and a contemplative singing style – gentle and haunted. Though the subject matter isn’t original, the kind of patient, step-by-step exploration of it gives it weight.

And then there’s the centerpiece and changeup: Amputee is a long, loud bit of post-rock bravado, and it’s also the weakest piece on the album. Everything preceding it already has such impact, trying to represent that more directly through a build-and-release style track feels like a slight misstep at this point, or perhaps a disappointing half-step: making the divide even more dramatic would’ve helped. The following couple tracks move our indie rock into 00s era muscley, hooky guitars; the narrative is coming to a conclusion, and the songs are sharpening up as a result. Good songs, but again, somewhat less interesting and grabbing.

These are, individually, very intriguing ingredients. And I respect the scope of the album; it starts off epic and that sensibility wavers over the lesser-epic moments to leave a nice spell over the listen, certainly enough so to continue digging in, and appreciating the passion and intention behind the performance." - Vaguely Offensive

Ventura – Ananasses / Satananasses 7" record

Founded in 2003, VENTURA is a rock trio mainly inspired by the nineties.
