All Those Racing Horses finds Williamson surpassing the enormous promise of Queen Street and her two subsequent releases, Unconscious Pilot and In the Arms of Ed, her songwriting finally able to catch up and perfectly showcase her tremendous voice. The superficial points of comparison remain easily identifiable as her vocal mannerisms are reminiscent of Beth Orton, though also at times sound eerily similar to Chan Marshall, like on the mesmeric August, Lisa Germano on Houses, Kristin Hersh on The News and even Björk in her haunting background work on The King. Lyrically, it follows far more in the vein of Hershs literary savvy storytelling than Ortons poetic muses. The intimate production, also taken on admirably by Tamara, sets the 13 songs in a uniformly stark and mellow cast, really only picking up tempo for her incredible cover of Karl Wallingers Love Street. While these comparisons hold some water, there is a bigger picture to Madrids sound. Darker, harder beats, more complex arrangements - a style that, once you know it, is both comforting and addictive... We've heard it called 'epic ambient, slo-house from space', says Christie from his Toronto-based studio. Anyone making or listening to original electronic music knows it's hard to describe. You feel like you've heard it somewhere before, yet you've never heard anything like it. With backgrounds as songwriters first and knob-tweakers second, Madrid eschews the sometimes cold constructs that other niche genres of electronica impose. There's definitely a warmth to our brand of electronic, says Perry. It's easy to get lost in the complexities of working machines. It's a fine line -- although the technology serves as your canvas for expression, you can't lose sight of the human heart. We try to serve up our beats with a hefty portion of passion. Part of that warmth is due in fact to the band's love and strict adherence to using vintage analogue synthesizers. The liner notes of the disc point out that all sounds made with classic analogue machines. And there's good reason for this. The warm, lush sounds of these early synths can transport the listener places that laptops and modern midi equipment can't. The album dips your toes into a gentle sea of soft-arpegios, rolling bass and stoned-immaculate melodies. Sub-sonar beats burble beneath the surface, as tranquil guitar-slides, shimmering crescendos and synthed-out vocals hover at the surface. Within the world of Madrid there lies a type of innocence -- a real sense that time has slowed down. Its the type of music that takes you away, reduces the heart rate, and brings up fuzzy memories of summer nights under the stars.

Beneath Augusta – You Gotta Come Down Sometime CD

Beneath Augusta write melodic indie rock that mitigates its pop roots with unconventional chord voicings and rhythms.

Beneath Augusta guitarists Matthew Cromarty and Michael Brennan had toured extensively throughout North America with their space rock quartet, Mellonova, releasing two EPs and one full-length record on indie label Aporia Records. It starts in Whitby, a small fishing/tourist town in North Yorkshire, home to Dracula and fish and chips and Mike TV. It was here that Mike had his first robot experience, at 10 years old. Some school friends and me won a school competition in morning assembly, doing robotics in yellow wraparound sunglasses to 'Street Machine' in front of 130 kids, recalls Mike. Me and my mate were really good at it but our third friend was rubbish. He just rode our coat tails. At 12 another obsession fused into Mike's over-active mind when he picked up the guitar after hearing Voodoo Chile and Pinball Wizard. At 17 Mike moved to Manchester to study Media and Music. For a while he worked as a boom operator in TV, and on films such as The Full Monty. I was rubbish, he now admits. I was always getting in shot. The highlight of his short-lived career was sharing a cup of tea in a Winnebago with Anita Dobson. Her massive perm gave me hay fever for months afterwards, Mike claims spuriously. Beats delivered their first release in September 2003, the limited single Kill All DJs. This was followed by the 10 Technology EP in April 2004. This shift in musical style became almost unavoidable when the band’s lead singer and rhythm guitarist Matt Booi ran into some ne’re-do-wells after a show in Toronto last summer. The altercation left him with a broken hand that allowed him to still hold a pick but that made playing the piano almost impossible.

The result is a disc that balances the glam of David Bowie with the strut and velour of Jarvis Cocker—an album that is, above all, meant to be heard live. Roxy Music, The Jesus and Mary Chain and the ghost of Talk Talk all make an appearance in the reverb-laden textures emanating from guitarist Josh Dallman’s amplifier. It is this attention to mood and atmosphere that is the cornerstone of Stirling’s particular brand of dial-twirling, frequency-taming, pedal-engaging and Bowie-inspired hollering.

Filled out by Jeremy Gontier (bass) and Mike Rivet (drums), Palace was recorded over a period of more than a year. Flights of Fancy is an EP of out-takes from the sessions for her delightful 2006 album, Ciné-Magique, which I reviewed here. I don’t generally crib from press releases, but the label’s assessment of these tracks as “a whimsical grouping of misfit songs” is spot on. The disc kicks off with a remix of “So in Love”, a Cole Porter tune Frost covered on the last LP. Here, it’s given a dark and burbling electro-pop makeover. The next track, “I Don’t Need Presents”, is an original, written and recorded with her producer husband, Jose M. Contreras. Ironically, it actually sounds like a ditty from the 1930s, while the Porter tune feels decidedly modern. “Waltz of the Malcontent”, meanwhile, is the off-kilter fairground song one would expect. The EP’s biggest highlight is “Flint and Feather”, which features a guest appearance from Ron Sexsmith(!) on guitar and vocals. With twinkling glockenspiel and otherworldly pedal steel swells, the song is a lilting country lullaby caught floating in the airwaves from some magical version of the past. With a fairly engaged following of fans, the band has been on the rise for almost as long. The boys have been touring heavily across North America in support of such acts as Tokyo Police Club, The Dears, Sam Roberts, and the French Kicks, and landed themselves in a CMJ showcase alongside A Place To Bury Strangers. For those who have traced the course of the band, the tour was a solid follow up to their Eponymous EP. Engaging, diverse, and at times moving, Expatriate is a strong effort in the right direction for a band trying to put their stamp on an amorphous music scene. One of the main attractions of the album, is it’s own varied nature: Many of the album’s tracks like Tightrope (available alongside an article from Exclaim!); Nueva York; The Moon Is Dead; or Song For Gypsy Rose Lee, illustrate a prototypical pop sound, similar to what one might expect from acts such as The French Kicks, The Horror The Horror, or perhaps an unreleased Jets To Brazil b-sides album. No Secret Why displays a definite alt-country bent, which reminded me of acts like the Old 97’s, the Drive-By Truckers, and the Tragically Hip. Ceremony Guns could be an homage to more symphonic art rock acts like Radiohead or Godspeed You Black Emperor! That track in specific blew me away. Indeed, field recordings of cityscapes and chanting monks recorded while visiting Korea have more in common with her work in composing for dance, film and theatre (for which she has received a Dora award and been nominated for a Juno). And yet this is not an album of unapproachable avant-garde sonic experimentation: as the driving beat behind the rock sensation The Cliks for three years now, there's no shortage of catchy riffs and solid drumming. As on her last album, Is This Home, she is once again accompanied on multiple tracks by the haunting vocals of Tamara Williamson and on the opening number by Clara Engel. However, the grand, sweeping, distorted guitars on tracks like "Show me How" and the classic pop intervals of "Silver City" announce that the focus this time is more Coldplay than Kraftwerk. This straddling of pop and ambient genres, something akin to Boards of Canada or K.C. Accidental, might be viewed as the central metaphor behind Other Life. Thinking about the divide between her private existence and life on the road, with all it's attendant excesses, made the latter seem almost otherworldly, a social environment completely detached from her daily routine and yet a very real part of her life. This juxtaposition is the uncanny third space that nurtures the mood, tone and constructive principle behind Other Life. Like Picasso's famous Blue Period, Viridian Torch uses colour as a way of marking Frost's new inspiration for this album. Whereas her previous work drew heavily from the urban landscape, Viridian Torch is inspired by the landscape around Frost's family home on Lake Huron. Viridian is a dark blue-green colour and comes from the Latin word for "green". The album delves into the spirituality and energy found in nature, drawing on its healing capability and raw power. Frost's emotional reverence for the natural world is evident in every lyric. The songs of Viridian Torch are dedicated to natural wonders - from the power of an electrical storm to the relaxing calm of the woods, and even features an ode to renowned Canadian artist Emily Carr for her ability to visually portray her emotional connection to the land. While debut album Expatriate was a polished indie pop release, Queen Cities exhibits grittier landscapes. Worriers can stand down though, the quartet haven't abandoned their previously established sound, rather they've enhanced it with fiercer guitars and a proliferation of keyboard parts. "Heartbreak City" begins the nine-track record with pounding drums, bouncing keys and a buzzing guitar line. Ben Spurr's voice shines when all but the beat cuts out, sticking each syncopated note with precision. The high-energy song gives listeners a preview of what to expect during the record's 35 minutes: a jaunt through humming guitar lines ("Golden Gate"); it's-already-stuck-in-my-head melodies ("Lovers Go"); and lilting vocals that allow numbers to linger in the air ("The Fire Out"). The Coast succeed on this album not only because of their uncanny knack for combining these elements, but for becoming more than just clones of those that came before (i.e., Wolf Parade, French Kicks).
