Lily Frost – Viridian Torch CD
Lily Frost is back with her sixth solo album, which combines her signature blend of theatrical, whimsical songwriting with a new inspiration the Canadian wilderness. Frost is best known for the Gemini-nominated score for the critically-acclaimed hit show Being Erica, which has recently brought her music to new fans across Canada and in the U.S., where the show is now shown on the ABC-owned cable channel SOAPnet. Like Picasso's famous Blue Period, Viridian Torch uses colour as a way of marking Frost's new inspiration for this album. Whereas her previous work drew heavily from the urban landscape, Viridian Torch is inspired by the landscape around Frost's family home on Lake Huron. Viridian is a dark blue-green colour and comes from the Latin word for "green". The album delves into the spirituality and energy found in nature, drawing on its healing capability and raw power. Frost's emotional reverence for the natural world is evident in every lyric. The songs of Viridian Torch are dedicated to natural wonders - from the power of an electrical storm to the relaxing calm of the woods, and even features an ode to renowned Canadian artist Emily Carr for her ability to visually portray her emotional connection to the land. Frost was compelled to follow suit, paying her respects to both Carr and the wilderness through her music and lyrics.
