Georgia is a hotbed for great sludge and crust bands, and the scene centers around Savannah. Damad were easily one of the highlights of this scene. Their filthy but expansive crusty sludge was at once heavy as hell while being awash in interesting and unsettling atmosphere. They're a lot more raw, but ultimately it's not a surprise that a member went on to form Kylesa. While not the pinnacle of their sound, their split with Meatjack is a nice farewell outing to their fans. Damad is the standout band on this split, but Meatjack was a welcome discovery.

Meatjack are more along the lines of the noiserock bands that really leaned into hardcore. While I can definitely hear some Jesus Lizard, Unsane particularly comes to mind. In their most abrasive moments I can detect hints of Today is the Day and even Daughters. Like Damad, they fuck heavy with weird dark psychedelic atmosphere while not sacrificing big heavy riffs in the process. The unhinged yell of the vocalist works perfectly here. They do have a spazzy side, which is used sparingly enough to keep things interesting while not hijacking the sound. Each of these band's stood out from the pack with a quirky, individualistic take on hyperfast hardcore, and this split rocks some of the best stuff either outfit ever recorded.

In the case of Daybreak, it's actually one of the only things the band ever recorded; formed in 1997, Daybreak only lasted for a couple years, breaking up sometime around 2000. For the brief period that they were around however, Daybreak were one of the
craziest, most manic hardcore bands in the DC/Baltimore area scene, blending together grindcore, thrash, black metal, and West Coast powerviolence with energetic yelped vocals and ferocious, sometimes silly lyrics, and also incorporating a hefty dose of melodic hardcore (and even veering into pop-punk territory at times) which made for a really tuneful, weird brand of blastcore. Their side of this split Lp is almost a concept mini-album: it's titled Nautical Hyperblast, all of the songs combine classic hardcore themes with seafarer/pirate imagery, and contains 17 songs with titles like 'Walk The
Plank, You Art Rock Bastard', 'White Sails', 'Halifax Harbor', and 'Devoured By Tides', with short snippets of ocean sounds (waves, seagulls, etc) appearing between each song. Their side of the LP jacket also sports an awesome old school painting of a sailor being attacked by a rotten undead corpse rising from the surf. Pretty badass! Despite being just a drums-and-bass guitar duo, Godstomper's duo of brother's Paul and Danny Barfo create a crushing whirlwind of extreme speed violence, channeling Swiss noisegrinders Fear Of God through snotty skate punk vibes and malfunctioning
instrument cables, and often breaking off into total improvised blast noise. Their side of this split blazes thru 12 tracks of noisy, crushing, terminally ugly blastcore that kills, and like most Godstomper releases, rocks some bitchin' B&W line art/collage artwork from the Lester Bangs of the crust/grind/noise underground, Sean "Seanocide" Hogan. The songs are neither chops-intensive enough to impress the guys who subscribe to Guitar Player and still think Stevie Vai is godhead, nor riff-swaggering enough to work as good old-fashioned stoner rock. While it's undeniably true that the album's lack of vocals is a godsend -- lord knows what kind of tripe some third-rate son-of-Ozzy hack would be growling out over the Black Sabbath-like stomp of "Out of Breath" -- it's hard to imagine anyone who is neither a friend of the band nor too baked to put down the bong and crawl out of the beanbag chair long enough to change CDs listening to this album more than once or twice." - Stewart Mason

Darsombra – Ecdysis CD

"Ecdysis” is the first release brought from the mind of Brian Daniloski, under the moniker of darsombra. A member of Baltimore heavies Meatjack, elements of their more experimental side is felt in the album opener. However, it quickly becomes apparent this will be the end of the similarities. Passages of ambient drone dissolve into the dark, brooding sounds of “my house” accentuated by the sound of the sitar. The track being written and recorded in a former dwelling that before being a living space was a funeral home. The sights, sounds and feel of Daniloski’s Baltimore neighborhood surface throughout “ecdysis”. Mixing harsh dissonant guitar tones with field recordings from his neighborhood, “thinning the herd” is a direct reaction to the tension and feelings of claustrophobia brought by his environment. “Drag the carcass” combines stark sonic landscapes blending with the rhythm of a local orator as he speaks of a “dead man”. Six albums into their lyricless career, Stinking Lizaveta are still jamming out some excellent sounds without it getting old fast. That is no small achievement. The album builds on the cosmic soundscapes and epic odysseys of their previous work, but here the group has channeled their energy into a more evocative, melodic sound, heightening the tension and release that the songs deliver. Make no mistake - the music is heavy, man - but in a clean, angular, and cinematic style that has been honed to perfection. Born in 1997 in the attic of a three-flat in Chicago's Ukrainian Village, Del Rey's music builds on the post-rock and electronic roots of their native city, but their sonic palette also contains hints of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Afro-Cuban textures. Added to their already impressive arsenal of furious double-rumming, stinging guitar work, and mesmerizing electronics, these elements are deftly woven into songs that take on a life of their own. On this outing, the band has also incorporated Asian instruments such as the Chinese guzheng and Japansese taiko drumming into their collection. Live, the music is infused with a feverish urgency, each song played like it could be their last. The signature of the group's shows is the symbiotic intricacy of their twin-drumkit attack, which, with it's relentless ferocity and punishing grace, has been leaving mouths agape and eardrums in shock for over a decade.

Bruce Lamont – Feral Songs For The Epic Decline CD

Bruce Lamont is known more for providing vocals, saxophone and other musical contributions to bands as diverse as metal's forward-thinking Yakuza and Bloodiest, industrial-influenced act Circle of Animals, and one of the country's most accurate and notable Led Zeppelin cover bands, Led Zeppelin 2. In July of 2006 Lamont made his debut solo performance, utilizing saxophones, guitar, voice, harp, percussion and looping effects. In 2007 Bruce recorded four tracks which he dubbed Feral, and three new tracks were recorded in 2010 called The Epic Decline; the two recordings were unified to form this, his first full length Feral Songs For The Epic Decline. Lamont's solo work takes the listener through tracks of dark Americana intermixed with loops, noise and drone. Acoustic guitar and clean vocals lead to trancelike tribal rhythms, with the sounds of tenor sax flowing over it all. Tribal rhythms lead to grating noise and anguished wails. Erie loops punctuated with Lamont's accusing voice pass to settling ambient conclusion. Grating noise builds to industrial soundscapes. Tenor flows over baritone sax drones, loops and builds with chilling wails. I have a friend that always tells me how great Cream Abdul Babar is, but I just never got around to checking them out.Luckily, this CD came with a nice info sheet, an, on top of that, I decided to do some research of my own.

The first four songs on this split come from Cream Abdul Babar, which seems like a crazy name for a band, so I assumed they must be a little weird. However, I was really pleasantly surprised by these four songs. The info sheet says these guys have been compared to Deadguy, Unsane, and Neurosis, and I can really see why. CAB has a massive sound, and just bashes you over the head with it.With seven members, it's not difficult to believe that these guys are capable of producing some insanely heavy music. The first track does indeed remind me a bit of Deadguy, and is just wonderfully violent. The second track isn't entirely unlink Unsane, but the opening riff closer to Helmet’s song “Unsung,” than anything. The next two tracks are slower and do have more than a few similarities to Neurosis (incidentally, one-time Neurosis engineer Billy Anderson also recorded this CD). These songs have a slightly lo-fi production, which wonderfully compliments the style of music Cream Abdul Babar plays.

The next five songs, by Kylesa, have the same title, and are five different parts. However, they all sort of run together to form one big song. I just can’t get into Kylesa at all. The music is just too brooding and monotonous. It is definitely heavy, but not at all exciting. Some of the songs/parts are just tracks of noise, but I can tell many people would be into these five songs, because there are many fans of noisy, trudging music. It’s just not for me at all. Kylesa’s production is quite decent though, considering the sound they are going for.

Another thing I like about this split is that it is nine tracks. I like splits that are a tad longer. I often feel ripped off from a split CD that only has two or three songs from each band." - Rob McFeters / Lambgoat
