Following the noisy and repetetive basslines of the Basic Channel gang and the minimal click/pop-rhythms of Pole, more and more albums with clear dub influences keep cropping up. Tennis is a collaboration between englishmen Benge and Si{cut}.db, and as such they choose a markedly less minimal route than the previously mentioned artists. They often use rhythms with a grainy, sandy feel, and they have a penchant for squeaking and creaking sounds. In 1999, Dooks developed Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, a debilitating disease affecting energy levels and the nervous system. Bound to his Edinburgh flat, with his film making activities on hold, Chris’s computer became his lifeline with the outside world, and, as he started working on some music, he also developed friendships with a multitude of very different artists around the world. Collaborations took shape, although Dooks never met his musical partners, all work being done via exchange of (pre- broadband) MP3s, on which Dooks would work when his health would allow. Social Electrics collects some of these moments.

Despite the variety of collaborators present on this record, Social Electrics is an incredibly intense and homogene work. As collaborations alternate with solo efforts, it rapidly becomes difficult to discern between internal and external inputs. With elements of hip-hop, electro, field recordings or electronica confronting each other, this album is dense, complex and challenging. The tracks, very often made up of multiple elements juxtaposed, are short, rarely going over the four minutes mark, and held tightly together.

Sounds come thick and fast, positioning themselves in the anarchic structures. Elements of voices, at times lacerated, plain at others, cohabite with bleeps, clicks, analogue noises and abrasive sounds. Out of this chaos, melodies sometimes emerge, and seem to bring some cohesion to the work. Dooks and his virtual guests, including Janeck Schaefer, Matt Elliot, of The Third Eye Foundation and Köhn, distort each other’s universe, challenge each component, recycle ideas, manipulate, experiment, and ultimately, create a most poetic symphony of promiscuous atmospheres, precarious beats and sonic interferences.

Amongst the darkest and most uncomfortable moments of Social Electrics are found in the broken vocals of Ether Works Part 1 or the digital terrorism of Homeostasis, while Sevumpteen or Now We Are Light demonstrate a more human approach to the same basic concept. In between these extremes, Dooks and friends put their compositions through an incredibly intense process, eliminating any unnecessary element, to work at the core of the soundscapes, applying sharp and aggressive movie-like montage techniques to underpin the bare essentials of this record. To complement this release, No One Sees Black, a short film Chris Dooks shot shotly before becoming sick.

Social Electrics takes an effervescent and refreshing look at contemporary music, ignoring rules and concepts, transcending genres and influences, to offer a disarmingly touching poetic vision. Nothing comes between Dooks and his work, and this record becomes a poignant symbol of a man in fighting. This time around the contributors are Mira Calix, Si-cut.db, Twine, Datach’i, Vs_Price, and Cray.

I’ve never been a big Mira Calix fan, but the track she contributes is decent, with Eastern percussion, shadowy voices, and mandatory crackly sounds. Si-cut.db’s “A Shower” is reminiscent of Basic Channel output, with minimal percussion and lots of reverb. It’s good for late-night atmosphere. Similarly, “Surfeit” is lo-fi burbling with a few dubby elements. These two tracks tempt me to track down more Si-cut.db material.

Meanwhile, Twine’s up to their usual tricks, layering noise over a soft melody on “Room.” “One_2” is equally melodic, and the sounds are more interesting—little squelches swirl over the beat, then strings begin to swell. Actually, Twine’s come a long way since Reference—their production’s stronger, and there’s a wider variety of sounds in their palette. Datach’i is also a purveyor of noises, some of them unpleasant, but all with interesting textures. “Komatsu” is a bit too grating for me, but “Truax” features a pleasing, subtle interplay of beats and bleeps. If only it were a bit shorter.

Next up is Vs_Price. “Plast_N1” starts with an extremely distressed hip-hop beat, with clickings over top. The melody that surfaces is simple, but effective. “B3” is in a similar vein, although perhaps it’s a bit too simple. Finally, Cray’s “Seven Satellites” is very abstract. There’s bursts of static and distortion and a smattering of actual notes. It’s basically an ambient composition, but its seeming randomness borders on uninteresting.

So there’s a relatively wide variety of music on this compilation. Duke's m.o. is midnight black, clanging machine techno of the sort Richie Hawtin crafts when he's in the mood, and that Thomas Brinkman has perfected. Heavily inspired by the sounds of Detroit, Duke shares some of Drexciya's fascination with the techno/electro crossroads, but Duke's album is much further removed from the conventions of early hip-hop. Only the opening track, "Hell Yeah", is really electro proper, and here Duke remains fixated on the gloomy, mechanistic attributes of the genre, like Cybotron with a dense coat of drop-forge grime. This fifth volume begins with a wonderfully simple, melodic composition by Accelera Deck. I’ve been following Chris Jeely since his second full-length, and his music is always enjoyable. Next up, Andrew Duke provides a down-tempo track which exudes warmth. A deep, rolling bassline and percolating beats back up the drawn-out synth chords. This is fifteen minutes of ambient bliss.

Mikael Stavostrand provides the third cut. Angel – Nr_11

"Philippe Petit’s Bip-Hop series has established a superior level of quality throughout its first five compilations, and for having presented well-known artists like Phonem, Marumari, Arovane, and Rechenzentrum alongside relative newcomers like Cray, Twine, and Warm Desk. Typically each collection features six artists who are allocated 10 minutes of disk space. In this latest volume, veterans Scanner and Ilpo Vaisänen (one-half of Pansonic) rub shoulders with the lesser-known Bittonic and Battery Operated. This approach guarantees some degree of familiarity for the listener yet also offers something novel and unexpected. As before, all tracks are exclusive to the compilation and come from artists located around the globe. What also distinguishes the Bip-Hop series is that there is no overriding theme or style that might delimit a given volume. Instead, variety and contrast are embraced, the implicit presumption being that the listener is open-minded enough to embrace a wide range of styles.

Spanish residents Alejandra & Aeron capture the nocturnal ambience of their milieu in “Listening to Radio Rioja Before Going to Sleep,” a dream-like collage of acoustic and digitally processed sounds full of strumming guitars, fuzzy murmuring, and flickering tones. Scanner (Robin Rimbaud) contributes “Thulium Hymn,” a gorgeous, thrumming track with its dulcimer-like chords overlaid by the cut-up babble of speaking voices. Similarly, in “Darska,” Rimbaud overlays a stuttering beat with the rising chords of a church organ and voices. Both tracks will satisfy fans of Scanner’s existing material but admittedly don’t break new ground. Bittonic’s (Iris Garrelfs) ‘”Helix 1” begins ominously with insect noises coupled with the dull roar of churning ambient noise amidst the stretched-out groans of a singular female voice. Ilpo Vaisänen’s standout “Horna” features waves of echoing splinters strafing the aural landscape, while “Vaara” marries the stiletto electronics typical of Pansonic with an irrepressible percussive funk. Sounding at times like a more sedate clone of DAT Politics, Battery Operated contribute the glitch-ridden “Sois Dwofe” and the clattering beats of “Kloppy.” Angel, comprised of Ilpo Vaisänen and Dirk Dresselhaus (a.k.a. Schneider TM), closes the compilation with “Nr_11,” an improvised, industrial noisefest. While it will delight those with a predilection for raw electronica, others fond of melody and compositional structure will find it less appealing. Still, one must credit Petit for honouring his commitment to present a broad range of approaches and not shying away from the noise end of the sonic spectrum.

So how does volume six ultimately measure up to its predecessors? It’s fine, although there may be a minuscule lapse in quality compared to the others. However, volume 5, with its superb contributions from Accelera Deck and Rechenzentrum, is admittedly a tough act to follow. Yet it seems almost more appropriate to judge the series as a whole, as opposed to obsessing over the merits of an individual volume. Assessing the series in this broader manner results in an unreservedly enthusiastic endorsement of its participants and the consistently high quality of their contributions. Challenging listeners’ expectations by presenting the unexpected is part of what has kept the series so vital and distinctive. It will no doubt be interesting to see where Petit and his Bip-Hop project venture next." - Ron Schepper

si-cut.db* And Full Swing + / vs. Stephan Mathieu Und Douglas Benford – Reciprocess + / vs. 02 CD

Since its beginning BiP_HOp has expressed an interest in collaborative works, trying to go against the autistic side of contemporary electronic music. For two or three years Bip Hop has formed the outermost edge of electronic music, defining its flow, rhythm and tools with great integrity, feeling and knowledge. In the last years Bip Hop seems to have lost that competitive edge somehow, but even if other labels have taken up that full frontier runners signal or the task of being the signpost of the outskirts of what electronic music can do, then Bip Hop is still a pretty exciting and knowledgeable label. And to anyone interested, the Generation compilations are a must have anyway. Number eight carries the line documents alliances of acoustic instruments and digital technologies below the place were the booklet is. In and around Cracked we have remarked upon the rise or rather re-entry of acoustics into the electronic sphere time and time again in the last years. So much so, that we have chosen not to comment on it anymore in the last months. A sound is a sound and its source is a superficial matter not interesting for the ear. The hearing sense of a human person works in the analogue sphere and as soon as the way the brain deciphers sounds has been decoded into meaning or emotions, I will throw down my record collection because then it will have lost about all of its magic and appeal. Anyway, such a statement, and as a release in this form by this label it is a statement of admitting that this trend is happening, we envision this as a confirming and encouraging pat on our shoulders. This is not at all to get up on Bip Hop. As the label which formed the way pure electronica was shaped some years back (and maybe still to a big a degree), formed by the personal tastes and senses of the people running the label, this is a big come around. Her music harnesses many different genres whilst creating noiseworlds which are all her own. Bela's performances are the stuff of legend: spontaneous, intense, and exhilarating. She builds layers of rhythm and sound from every part of her instrument: sounds are looped, take on lives of their own, bounce off each other...the effect, as anyone who's heard her will testify, is mesmeric. Bela emerges from the DIY arena with Hespera, her fourth solo release the first with BiP_HoP and also the first which comprises self-contained studio tracks of seven minutes and under, recorded by Kris Weston (aka Thrash) & Grantby. Bela is a prolific and well-travelled performer who tours extensively as a headline act in the UK, Europe, and North America; she s recently also thrilled crowds at Supersonic, Glastonbury, Bestival, and EXPO, as well as at many worldwide Ladyfests. She has also performed numerous live sessions on Resonance FM, BBC Radio 3, Totally Radio, and in Second Life. In addition to her solo work, Bela has collaborated extensively with other musicians live with Tim Exile, Sten Sandell, Rhodri Davies, and Same Actor (to name but a few), and in the studio with Gruenrekorder, Net-Lab, and Strings of Consciousness. She's also worked with film-makers Tereza Buskova & SchMovies and dancer Anushiye Yarnell, plus created many other live soundtracks to film, theatre, and cabaret. Studio & live sessions include four with Lianne Hall for Radio 1 s John Peel, and recordings with British Sea Power, The LoveGods, and Caramel Jack. She also tours worldwide with percussion company Stomp.
