Students from music, art, engineering and dance make up the Digital Music Ensemble (DME) directed by Stephen Rush, a professor in the School of Music and a composer holding a position that includes music composition and technology, dance and art. Students work to collaborate in the creation of new work, or perform innovative music/art works from the past, works largely ignored by mainstream academe. The fall semester is usually focused on readings concerning the Labyrinth tradition in many cultures, culminating in the recurring work Gypsy Pond Music , a sonic, site-specific installation involving sculpture and algorithmic computer music. The DME has given performances of varying content and approach, including performances in Berlin's experimental cafe, the "Schmalzwald", as well as presentations/performances and exhibits at the Aurreale Festival in Baitz, Germany, more recently at the Bowling Green New Music Festival. The title piece 'Automatic Inscription of Speech Melody' is a trio improvisation by Carrier Band based on quotes written in the technical notebooks (1934-1949) of pioneering electronic instrument developer Harald Bode. The piece weaves words and phrases excerpted from the notebooks spoken and vocoded by Peer Bode through the Bode Vocoder. The vocoder transfers speech onto pitched sounds and the VOICE releases the CARRIER sounds. These texts, along with Pauline's electronic sounds created on her Difference Box were mixed with loops and excerpts of Harald Bode's demo tapes and synthesized sounds constructed by Deutsch. The LFO drone heard at the beginning was Pauline's entrance into the piece. FISH LOVE THAT came together for a concert in New York City every month between September 1996 and June 1998, first at the Knitting Factory, and then at HERE. Since then, we have played several times a year. To keep the focus on freshness and improvisation, we don't rehearse a lot. We get together for an hour or two before each concert, and generally go over new material, but only enough to know how it's put together. We don't actually try to rehearse a full performance. Instead, we try to keep the focus sharply on the performance itself, with the audience listening while we explore the musical ideas.

Although I wrote all the music for the first concerts, other players started to bring in pieces for the band from very early on. Andrew Sterman, Steve Rust and Todd Reynolds all jumped right into the heart of the concept, putting together charts which challenge us to play freely and imaginatively together, but which give us a structure and focus which keep the individual pieces unique. When we're playing well, it seems to me that we find an exciting musical landscape -- one with coherent melodies, driving meters and harmonies, but with the ability to be transformed and shaped fluidly. They are presented on the odd tracks of this CD. What has fascinated me most about these pieces is nature's ability to align independent events to form interesting patterns. For this, I took the standpoint of the observer; my credits are merely due to choosing the time and place of the recording. Consequently, the effect is often similar to aleatoric works of music. I hope you will share my enthusiasm about the variety of auditory icons in each Soundscape, which makes a city identifiable. All even tracks contain pieces of my own work. The solo improvisations in Tracks 2, 6, 10, and 14 can be seen as an abstract transformation of my perceived environment. Only the beginning theme in Track 2 was fixed before the recording. In Track 10, you might be able to notice my affection for repetitive and machinery like sounds.

Tracks 4, 8, and 12 consist of ensemble recordings with soprano saxophone, Moog bass, and Soundscape fragments. One goal was to preserve the original character of each instrument or environmental sound opposed to making their origin unidentifiable through extensive electronic processing. Indeed in some cases, the lengthy Soundscapes shape the character of the piece, and again I am surprised how often their aleatoric elements tend to fit perfectly into the music. "A Night in Battambang" was written in 1995 while visiting my parents in Cambodia. The piece was performed using the classic rock trio formation of lead instrument, bass and drums when I arranged the song for this CD. "Time to Move On" is based on a Turkish 9/8 rhythm, the Karsilama. Originally, the piece had a theme but in the end, I liked the track better without it. I decided to counterpoint the long, circular-breathed saxophone phrases with abrupt changes for the remaining instruments. The ballad, "Blues Me," started as an experiment while wondering why tenor saxophone ballads are usually slower than alto and soprano saxophone ballads. At 50 beats per minute, this ballad is at the lower end of most Tenor Ballads. Long Soundscape passages were chosen to reflect the lethargy.

Evidence – Iris CD+DVD

The second CD release from the duo Evidence (Stephan Moore and Scott Smallwood) on the Deep Listening label is also their first video release. At the same time, he has been collaborating with a number of younger choreographers to create sound scores for their performance works. To Build A Field collects the best of these pieces, drawn from six of his commissions by four very different choreographers. The CD's title refers to Moore's view of his role in these collaborations: designing and executing sonic structures that define the emotional and rhythmic topography of time. Each track negotiates a balance between acoustic sound sources and electronics, live performance and studio composition, and human vs. algorithmic control of sound materials. Time is continually bent into new shapes, challenging the listener, and his collaborators, to think beyond the easy comforts of a regular tempo, and confront rhythm as texture instead of a reliable grid.

Oliveros And Ione ‎– Io And Her And The Trouble With Him DVD

Io and Her and the Trouble With Him - A Dance - Opera in Primeval Time Written and directed by Ione. Music and sound design by Pauline Oliveros. A collaborative venture among artists of all types, this dance-opera is a multimedia panorama of experimental theatre and technical virtuosity that includes aerial ballet, masks, video projection, a sinister thousand-eyed monster, and a highly imaginative electronic soundscape. The one-act story, set in primeval time, retells the myth of Io from a matriarchal perspective. Io, Argivian priestess, is transformed by a terrible spell and roams the world, lovely but tormented. While enduring entrapment by Argus, the terrible monster, she is befriended by the brilliant Bird who helps her discover the key to her escape. Only upon her arrival in Khemt (Ancient Egypt) does she begin to understand the true mystery of what her journey has been about and its meaning for the future of the world.

To listen to Sound Creation on the Free Music Archive click this link

Johannes Welsch – Sound Creation CD

The gong, one of the oldest instruments on the planet, commands the artist more than any other instrument. Except for the seventh improvisation which also uses singing bowls, the improvisations on gongs by Johannes Welsch feature only gongs of different types and sizes, most of them from the full Sound Creation Series crafted by the Swiss company, Paiste. The Paiste Sound Creation Series consists of four groups named after the elements of alchemy, fire, water, earth and air, with three gongs in each group except for earth that has four. Welsch in his improvisations works with two sound aspects of the gongs, that of dynamic range and the other of frequency spectrum. He has written: "I typically develop soundscapes which come out of and return to silence. While the amplitude increases the gong unfolds its full frequency spectrum, beginning with low frequencies (fundamental) and subsequently developing those beautiful overtones (harmonics)." The first improvisation, *Fire*, uses the Paiste fire gongs to explore aggression, sun, and fire. In *Storm* two gongs are heard. The 28 inch symphonic gong has a slightly raised surface with its fundamental note balanced with its complex overtones. Its sounds are combined with the 32 inch earth gong. For *Water*, Welsch combines three Paiste water gongs -- moon, peace, water-- with two Chinese gongs of different sizes (20" and30"). *Earth* features two of the Paiste earth gongs (38" and 60"). In *Symphony Part I* a Paiste symphonic gong of 38 inches reverberates with a microphonic (inspired by Stockhausen) gong of 60 inches. The latter can be heard in *Symphony Part II* along with a large symphonic gong of 60 inches. To conclude this set of improvisations, Welsch describes *Air* in sound with two singing bowls, one of crystal, the other of bronze, along with an Indonesian gong, and the Paiste air gongs of abdomen, chest, and head. Johannes Welsch is the proprietor of the Dunrobin Sonic Gym, a professional facility in Ottawa devoted to the experience, study and production of sound. A critical thinker, performing artist and music producer his artwork and ideas have been featured on radio programs around the world. He has been a drummer from early childhood and for two decades has been offering performances featuring one of the world's largest collections of fine gongs currently on permanent display at the Dunrobin Sonic Gym where he has performed with artists such as David Mott, Pauline Oliveros and Jesse Stewart. Johannes studied economics at the University of Miami and received his doctorate in Management from IESE, the University of Navarra's Graduate School of Management. In 1991 he was the recipient of the "Best Doctoral Dissertation Award" by the American Family Firm Institute (FFI). His early research which applied social systems analysis to transitional processes in large industrial family firms has been published in academic journals and covered by national media in Europe. His lectures on organizational dynamics have been attended by managers of some of the world's largest organizations. Johannes has taught and/or held research positions at IESE in Barcelona, IMD in Lausanne, The German Management Institute (USW) at Gracht Castle in Germany, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome.

Kristin Norderval – Aural Histories (Post-Ambient Arias For Voice And Electronics) CD

Kristin Norderval cut her musical teeth touring with Einstein on the Beach in 1992, went on to record works of American composers such as Tania Leon, David Lang, and Anne LeBaron, improvised in the New Circle Five with Pauline Oliveros and Susie Ibarra, and co-founded the electro-acoustic duo Zanana with trombonist Monique Buzzarté. Now she has released a solo CD of her works for voice and laptop. The composer writes: Aural Histories is a compilation of works for voice and electronics. None have lyrics, but they all have stories. Some are improvisations recorded in one take with live sampling and audio processing in real-time; others are electronic compositions with varying degrees of vocal improvisation; and still others are through-composed electronic works. Some use the voice alone as sound source, and others contain pre-recorded and processed sounds of machines and electronic equipment, from coffee machines and microwaves to incubators and antique motors. Quoting from the liner notes of Nina Sun Eidsheim really does tell the story: One might be tempted to listen to and discuss Kristin Norderval s music in terms of her awareness of and grounding in European and North American music cultures. Beyond opera, such a discussion would also conjure resonances of mediaeval chant, folk music, extended vocal techniques, musique concrete, minimalism, popular music and much more. But to reduce this music to its historical awareness, lineage, and technical mastery would be to muffle it, flattening the listening experience into a drop-the-needle exam. Norderval s music actively resists such listening. Instead, it seeks to show us that listening cannot be contained by a hands-off, objective mode that follows a predetermined analytical model. The thematic figure this music draws, then, is listening. While it is a music that invites us to listen, it is also a music that listens. By music that listens I mean listening as witnessing: the composer s ears are open to both joy and suffering in the world. Kristin hears the voices that are often drowned out by the 24-hour news cycle or, as she puts it, are not newsworthy. She listens to people and things alike because she knows that they are interconnected and that one s faith is the other s destiny. This is a music that offers a resounding answer to Peter Szendy s question on the role, and the authority, of the work. Kristin s music answers: there is no Work, no key to unlocking its mystery. There is only you, me, and our encounter with the music this is its resistance to the dominant narrative. Following Daphne Brooks, this music has its ear to the subterranean feminist archive. Zooming further out, alongside singers and composers including Meredith Monk, Anne LeBaron, Juliana Snapper, and Mendi and Keith Obadike, Norderval s work fits within [...] a contemporary U.S. feminist opera that seeks to denaturalize singing, listening, and sound. This is work that faces rather than masks sound s dependency on material transduction. Furthermore, it never forgets that sound always sounds in a three-dimensional setting even when played through speakers or headphones, as will be the case with this CD. [...] For Kristin Norderval each sound s specific location in space is a significant compositional parameter. Aural Histories is not a linear sound trajectory; instead it is an invitation to step into any of its ten different scenes.
