A bunch of no-good f**ks from New Orleans, Louisiana have f**king treated you with complete disregard! These cretins call themselves DIE ROTZZ, and they have released the absolutely mesmerizing Tugboat EP. This is primitive, stripped-down punk rock not unlike the S**T DOGS in 1978. This is that kind of visceral punk played from the heart without pretensions. On side A, DIE ROTZZ chugs through “Goring El Matador” and “No Change,” and conjures up visions of the CORPSICLES playing at a high school dance. This is great! Side B starts with “Tugboat,” a catchy little punk rock number that might have you digging out your DESPERATE BICYCLES 7”s. DIE ROTZZ finishes you off with a fine number, “Knife from Behind,” proving that these evil f**ks are channeling dead punk bands from beyond the grave! F**king amazing!" - Bruce Roehrs / MRR

The Spooks – Death From Beyond The Grave LP

"Quite a bizarre album here from these Atlanta garage punks, featuring member(s) of the Black Lips and others, somewhere between a Halloween sound effects album and synth punk a la the Screamers, Los Reactors, and the Spits. Some of it is really terrific and engaging, and some of it is really unlistenable. Either way, the fellas seem to be having a fantastic amount of fun with the material and I imagine something like this is better meant to be experienced live. Rump Posse is the true gem of the Atlanta music scene. Who else looks and sounds like a cross between a workout tape and a Van Halen video? That's why the Drunken Unicorn was packed with eager Rump fans, when the band got together to play their first show in more than a year.

I feared the worst when the Posse took the stage sporting goatees, flannel shirts and acoustic guitars. After launching into a hilariously bad cover of Alice in Chains "The Rooster" the band was pelted with empty beer cans. The booing proved to be too much for singer/guitarist Dr. Sweet. "You guys don't like grunge? Oh, you wanna hear the old Rump Posse?" With those words, the band tore off the flannels, grabbed the electric instruments and proceeded to shave off the goatees with an electric razor. What was left was the good old Rump Posse: heather gray tank tops, sunglasses, mustaches and American flag headbands.

Two seconds into the first song, "Exit the Dragon" it became clear that the Posse has mastered the art of cheese. The guitars, keyboard and drum machine were processed to the point that the band sounded like the upbeat metal soundtrack to a Nintendo game. Dr. Sweet was equal parts workout instructor, motivational speaker and frontman. Wearing a microphone headset, he danced around with his guitar, spouting hilarious motivational rhetoric, like "Living the dream has never felt so good!"

During "Getting in Shape" Dr. Sweet disappeared from the stage. But I didn’t mind listening to it, and kept at it. To me, it had that weird honor of being a band I like listening to, but always had difficulty placing if I didn’t put the record on. On the outskirts, Frantic’s guitars sound like the Tyrades (imagine a cat strangled with wire) and has more than a passing blush to DC hardcore (with the cover of Government Issue and more barking and talking than singing). Then I discovered something on the tenth spin. You know all those records that say “Play loud!” just to look more exciting? Well, Frantic’s true power is discovered at higher volumes, and that revealed something I hadn’t picked up on at first: they seem to be channeling those recently released Adolescents demos. All of you witnessed the genius of songs like "Christmas Calculator" on their split with Livefastdie. They sent me a demo called 'Rocket To Prussia' two summers ago and I listened to it every day for months. In a drunken stupor I managed to convince myself that "Strictly Business" was one of the greatest songs of these modern times. And when I woke up hungover the next morning, I still believed it. I don't think VCR maybe had hopes as high for themselves as I did for them. I guess they all moved on, their brilliant moments recorded for posterity, thank the Lord. You can say what you want about their post-Black Lips garage-punk moves, but these kids invested their songs with the real piss and heart that those guys had when they recorded their first single. Absolutely vital sounding. Catchy, rocking, seemingly effortless and balls-out drunk and high, the type of shit that comes from a bunch of kids who hang out together while skipping school and drinking only the cheapest of malt liquor and listening to the finest of records. The songs? "Code C" is a total rocker that slips from paranoiac to lucid from chorus to verse motored by bass throb and smashed-to-shit drums. And it's only the second best cut. "Strictly Business" is so catchy, so punk, I seem to remember the lyrics being about their Korean pot dealer or something ("He spells his name K-W-O..."). There's a demo version of this track that is even more sick, if that's possible. "Gamblin' Man" is the roller, up-tempo whoop-ass New Jersey country rock. This shit is real. Dead Deer portrays an evolution of the trio’s tense punk into something richer—but no less fiery—than their previous efforts. From front to back, the LP is a reminder of how much Atlanta music has to give and the critical nature of art in these strange times. From the very first chord, Dead Deer buzzes with untamed energy and the same wild heart that makes even their most misanthropic anthems feel triumphant.

Like much of vocalist and guitarist Brannon Greene’s previous songwriting, the lyrics revolve around the existential dread, the chaos of daily existence, and the ways in which we mindfuck ourselves despite our best intentions. Societal pressure, uncertainty, and nebulous futures occupy Greene’s shouted refrains, as jackhammer beats propel minute-long tracks into brick walls. Despite the brevity of Dead Deer, the songs feel like fully realized ideas rather than hardcore snippets. Meanwhile, the addition of electronic elements, effects, and interludes makes the record an experience unlike any of the band’s previous releases. Though not as skeletal as their early tracks, the array of sounds are unmistakably Nag, recalling everything from early Tyvek and Goner Records to ’80s no wave. While the album’s foundation relies on pounding, mosh-ready punk classics like the “Dead Deer,” “Stale,” and “Day Glow,” the 13-track adventure is fleshed out by a variety of angular experiments, particularly the tense post-punk of “Polarize” and the nightmare dreamscape of “The Traveler.”

With every snare strike, I feel roused from a dream. The Soft Spots tear through a jagged version of “Make You Mine,” which sounds tougher here than on his album. A loose run through Link Wray’s “Rumble” follows. It’s a song that Bobby and bassist Mark Nauman riffed on together since their days in the Lids. Here it stands as a eulogy to Ubangi’s wily ways. Baby Dino’s brand of girly, gutter-pop takes on an unexpectedly sweet façade with a cooing little number called “Coke Dick.” A cover of Tracey Dey’s “I Won’t Tell,” also gets a melancholy makeover that’s tastefully reserved for these perennial party ladies. Still, one can almost hear Ubangi huffing in disbelief about his final offerings being on the flipside of a song called “Coke Dick.”" - Chad Radford
