Featuring former members of Nora, Ensign, et al., My Shining One utilize an abundance of melody to appease older fans, but are modernly heavy enough for younger listeners to latch onto. Guitarists Chris Byrnes and John Stanley crank out fat-necked and cocky riffs through three songs, the rhythm section of bassist Andy Koniecko and drummer Crumbs provides a thumping foundation and Rob O'Neil articulates relatively clean vocals with a demonic edge. They give their sound a more contemporary twist on third track "The Last Lawn in Somerville," as speed and bass-drum breakdowns incite Byrnes and Stanley to descend their instruments through corkscrew turns.Manchester, England's Son of the Mourning, by contrast, come from the new class of sound and style where chaos and inconstancy are your friends. Their three contributions are loaded with dizzying tempo shifts played as close to reckless without losing control as possible. There's a fair amount of staccato fury on "The Reimus Code," but also plenty of chilly noodling that keeps you on your heels, knowing something's going to hit the fan. The calm, piccolo opening to "Memento" similarly dwells more on atmosphere than how fast they can play. This lead-in to the song's slower body doesn't mask the catastrophic doom the band achieve, however.Mostly hidden within Son of the Mourning's ramshackle output are the decidedly non-gruesome and/or morbid lyrics almost customary in the genre. They encourage a lovesick someone to move on in "Memento." At the end of "The Reimus Code," they emphasize, "Remember what you have got / And don't regret what you have lost / There isn't time to live the past / So live each day as if it's your last."This split EP, if anything, is a swift reminder of metal's roots and where it's now going. On this record Adjudgement don't just continue where the genius of "At Two O'Clock" left off but raise the bar again and show that they can get even better. In a scene that couldn't save itself from being infiltrated and diluted by trends and short-living fashions, Adjudgement is one of the few bands who manage to stay true and this record is proof that progress doesn't necessarily mean selling out. Adjudgement are deeply rooted in old school hardcore but have created their own sound, an educated and unique arrangement of power and dynamism matched by thoughtful lyrics dealing with things that matter to them and should matter to you; global capitalism, social submission and artificial trends within their scene. This band has something to say. The lyrics are not just a side order and the topics they cover show a broad diversity. Stories about everyday life switch to personal impressions, criticism of the scene or social political topics. To put it in the bands own words, "Whether it's the messed up restroom from the show last weekend or the racist refugee politics of the western states." This masterpiece of hardcore is Adjudgement's fourth full album and to create it they rejected all live engagements in the second half of 2006. This for a band who have been touring throughout Europe for over a decade and are well known for their incredible live performances shows no small commitment. On So Long, So Long Lee sings, My income won t let me live/I slave too hard for what they give./So what s the point in living anymore/when the water s right outdoor? If the aliens wanted to learn about, say, ballet, we could show them a video of Baryshnikov. If they asked about golf, some footage of Tiger Woods would certainly explain a lot. And if the little green men wanted to grasp the concept of radio-friendly alternative rock (it could happen!), it would make sense to play them this CD by Breaching Vista. It's not that this Canadian band is the best alt-rock group out there, nor the most successful, but their four-song debut EP, Breaking the View, is a veritable primer on crafting catchy, hook-laden tunes that showcase all the best elements of the genre (and, thankfully, none of the worst). With four songs clocking in at 15 minutes, the mcd is a concise how-to of the genre, like a 'Dummies Notes' for any young hipsters hoping to get airplay and chicks. All the crucial ingredients are there: the not-too-complicated guitar riffing, the angst-ridden lyrics about lost loves and other grief (our fave line: "Oh, this room is a hostel of pain"), the slick multi-layered production and the stuck-in-your-head-for-days anthemic choruses. Though this type of music has been done before (think Jimmy Eat World, Gin Blossoms, Tugboat Annie, Fightstar) it is not often done this well. Lead vocalist John Maksym has a gutsy, self-assured voice that lends a sense of urgency and honesty to the lyrics. The guitar sound is tweaked to perfection, giving the big riffs some in-your-face power whilst the more intricate parts add texture to the background. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more effective pop-punk song than 'Tap Tap' and in a space of less than four minutes the song evolves with several distinct gear changes and a chorus that just begs to be sung along with. If our hypothetical alien visitors wished to understand the concepts of "originality" or "avant-garde," we would surely have to steer them away from Breaching Vista. Not everyone will love it, but we know that some do. There's a rewarding feeling when connecting with fans, and it means the world to us to have someone appreciate what we've created...However large or small the impact may be, that is amazing! In the grand scheme of things, it s the handshakes, high fives, smiles, laughs and good times that mean the most. It s all just rock n roll at the end of the day. This is why we love doing what we do. John Maksym, vocalist and guitarist. I have to start this review by saying that I like this band, not necessarily for their music, but for their attitude. There are some real nasty, undeserving SOBs out there in the music world and, while I totally get that grace is a hard virtue to master, this four-piece pop rock outfit from Kitchener can teach everyone a thing or two about being cool with who you are, what you do, and how lucky you are to be doing what you want to do, regardless of what the cynics have to say. This alone makes their Hedley-meets-Simple Plan sound all the more tolerable to me. Following an extremely well received debut EP and four years in the making, Breaching Vista s first full length album, Vera City, has finally been released. It opens up with We Are the Way , a minute and a half instrumental that flows seamlessly into the next track entitled Sleep . The third track, Nervous , begins after a fraction of a second of silence as if still part of Sleep , Jesus-of-Suburbia-style. I can picture Nervous being the title track to a teen drama, which can be good or bad depending on whether you re the teen living vicariously through impractical yet deeply relatable content, or old enough to have moved on from the incessant melodramatics of inexperienced love. This and the following track, Forgive You , together represent your typical immature relationship (not only in spirit but in length), moving quickly and indecisively through the apprehension, euphoria, and disappointment we are all so familiar with. In fact, this whole album is pretty much made for teens (and preteens too I guess, I can t really tell the difference anymore anyway), who are luckily within the most lucrative consumer demographic in the industry. From the perspective of my fourteen year old self, who paid more attention to her emotional reaction to the faces and ideas behind music than the actual music itself the very means by which nineties boy bands stayed afloat on radio airwaves Vera City works. Better yet, given what most modern boy bands like Breaching Vista are releasing, the music on Vera City is not at all hacked to death with effects and the dreaded robotic tones of auto-tune. For the latter alone, I am grateful. They keep it simple, throwing in a touch of punk here and a touch of acoustic there, and Billy The Kid makes a guest appearance on Letters , her airy vocals sweetly complimenting the already sentimental tone of the song. Parents will be glad to know Breaching Vista s looks and lyrics are clean as a whistle and, according to Facebook research, some moms might even dig a tune or two themselves. I mean, even the poppiest rock bands out there have one song or member that would scare anyone over 40, but not these guys. Trust me, I looked everywhere. Clean. As. A. Whistle. It s the kind of album that effectively introduces young girls to rock music without tainting their view of life anymore than Degrassi or Gossip Girl already does. No questions or hidden agendas. Simply put, Engineer Records wanted to gather a small array of artists that we´ve loved and worked with in the past, and/or thought would sound great in the environment of an acoustic guitar as the central instrument, and build from there. Don´t let the title fool you though, as there are as many acoustic rockers on here, as much as the intensely subtle, slow burners as you´d expect on such a compilation. Listening to it as a whole youâ TMll hear that this real gem of a project sounds just as dynamic as any ´proper´ album. Although mellow in places, this is not a snoozer of an album only to fall asleep with. Hearing how each artist took the idea and built upon it is certainly the key to the albumâ TMs inspiration. You´ll find some songs that sound like the artists´ best work yet, and plenty of exclusive material. You´ll hear the acoustic guitar accompanied by piano, strings, vocal harmonies, and fitting percussion. You´ll hear some artists we´ve worked with in the past, showing off their new material, and some newer bands, or newer solo work, most of which is previously unreleased. Engineer Records and these artists, including Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music), Ryan Mills, Jeff Rowe, The Satellite Year, Her Only Presence, Mikee J Reds (Call Off The Search), Elemae, The Waltz (Penfold/Moirai) and Dan Coutant (Joshua), have created the scenario of a sit down at a camp fire surrounded by good friends. Perfecting their style they are way more than a folk rock act as they turn up the volume and creativity, injecting a healthy dose of gut and grit into their melodic songs. Hidden Cabins recorded their first set of songs at Portrait Recording Studios in March of 2013 and began stamping their name onto stages near and far soon after with consistent shows and touring abroad (Canada, England, USA). Their first release was on Oak Apple Records of Alberta, Canada, as a split CD with eclectic duo, Brother Octopus. Now Weathered raises the stakes and Hidden Cabins will be headed back to the UK for their second tour here this summer, as well as partnered dates in Spain playing for their new promo team over at Desert Pearl Union. They worked with a friend at a studio and the results are unequivocally professional." - Dan Weston / Divide And Conquer Music

Son Of The Mourning ‎– Eulogy CD

"Eulogy is the latest offering from Son of the Mourning, the Salford based prog metal band. I guess you knew that from the title though.

It is seven track album which in my opinion starts quite slow. Not slow in a tempo sense, but slow in an unengaging sense. Its first track, Leech Mistress, is quite underwhelming. I would go as far as to say I did not like it. It feels a little like the drums are put to the forefront of the track to push it along but it detracts from some solid guitars. An album like this needs a big rousing opener to keep people invested but this, simply put, is not.

However….Things pick up as the album progresses. The second track Glowing Orionid has awe-inspiring guitar work and it really moves the energy up a gear.

The third track made me glad I had kept going, as I was rewarded with Skinbox. This is where the album should have begun and is definitely the best of this release. This is the high energy, ‘smash up your Ibanez on your Marshall Stack and then regret it five seconds afterwards’ track. If you skip tracks make sure you come here. It is the one that would be released on a seven inch if CD’s and Steve Jobs hadn’t killed the vinyl single.

The rest of the album moves along well and has some nice ebbs and flows, and definitely left me pleased that I took the time to listen to it. Make sure if you listen to it, to check out the last few minutes of Carpe Diem, it is really emotive in a Sanatorium, Metallica way.

Overall there are a lot of positives about this album and I liked it. The detracting elements for me are that the drums are way way to imposing in most tracks and it is quiet apparent that whoever arranges the songs LOVES blast beats. The background vocals are a little strange also. They don’t really gel with the tracks in my opinion. It is more like, every once in a while another band member has something to say and you hear a faint voice break into the track, instead of really contributing to the lead vocals. Or perhaps that is the intention? If so…hats off!

However, this album does for me what it should. Once you get over the first track the album really builds momentum and the tunes stick inside your brain for a few hours. Judging by the batch of compact discs I’ve got for an in-depth examination, the label specializes in profoundly melodic music that soothes the soul. That’s the case about the Under The Weather, five-song extended play by Red Light Runner. This material also happens to be their fifth release under the Engineer etiquette. Previously they released a two-song demo, a debut self-titled EP, acoustic demo called Questions, a single named The First Time, and a double A-side single Just Might Find/Lucky Thirteen. Then the group released another extended play entitled What Are You Thinking About and a live recording Live At The Treadmill.

For those who’re not familiar with their music, Red Light Runner is profoundly into emo sound, but the band doesn’t hesitate to include some appropriate ingredients along the way. Besides delicate emotiveness demonstrated throughout this extended play, the group adds up essentials of indie music, decorated by notable pop-punk elements. Red Light Runner combines these ingredients by delivering slightly distorted thematics characteristic for contemporary emo/indie scene. Themes consist of appealing guitar dualities, mainly showcased through energetic palm-muted chord progressions on one, and structured guitar leads on the other side. The rhythm guitars eventually let it loose on choruses, which benefits the broader melancholic atmosphere that the entire group tries to achieve. Still, the main focus remains on the delightful guitar licks, mainly comprised of arpeggios, octaves, and constructive solos. Both guitars shred with such ease, and ultimate precision is the main characteristic of these experienced musicians.

Astounding musicianship of the bass player is equally hearable as guitars, and his performance defies mentioned melodies with completely mindblowing basslines. Warm sounding tones accommodate the ambiance through wondrously executed technicalities that also provide enough mass to saturate the crispy clear sound of both guitars. This Italian emotive post-hardcore quintet has been active for a while, paving their way to the top with a profoundly melodic, but yet delicate approach to the genre. The group worked hard since the formation at the very beginnings of 2014, defined the sound, and decided in which direction they want to sail on as a band. It wasn’t until April of 2019 when they published a couple of singles such as Chiaroscuro and Vessel as announcements for their debut full-length album. The group wanted to sound as good as it possibly could be.

Through Maiden Voyage, Amalia Bloom offers eight post-hardcore compositions deeply rooted in the essentials of emo-core sound. The group relies on massive guitar shreddings, saturated by the echoic harmonizations. Amalia Bloom appears both ferociously aggressive and melancholic at the same time, but it perfectly balances between these distinctive expressions. However, the band also includes some compelling melodic hardcore ideas empowered by metalcore dynamics along the way. Both production, arrangements, and song structures combine the best affinities of the contemporary trends, mainly demonstrated by the vast portion of the bands within the genre. Still, Amelia Bloom simultaneously sounds innovative, astounding, and modern.

Guitars burst with relentless energy through dense guitar shreds, massive enough to crush everything in a wide radius. While the rhythm guitar punches directly in the face somewhere in the background, other guitar does quite the opposite. Lead guitar calms down powerful shreds through various orchestrations, showcased through echoic octave themes, a wide array of technically demanding maneuvers, polyphonic acrobatics, and other guitar licks. The incredible rhythm section supports all these virtuosities with intense drumming experience, rarely performed in this accordance with the remaining portion of the group. Low-end tones come somewhere in between with slightly distorted basslines, heavy enough to crush all the bones. However, even these aggressive moments sound soothing, delightful, and memorable.

Maiden Voyage offers both heaven and hell through tremendous polyphonous experience. This album settles down the neverending quarrel between mind healing atmospheres and hellish orchestrations. With a sound embracing the snarl of punk and contagion of pop to its rousing rock roar, the London based trio have already teased ears with a pair of well-received singles and it is easy to suspect they will find escalating praise with the unveiling of their next offering.

Who We Become is a concept record based around a character named Macy, an undefined figure who could be “anyone in this world” who becomes a major protagonist in “Nevernia”; a land that reflects the worst aspects of modern society. The release opens up with Superstar, a song instantly drawing ears with its singular but potent guitar melody. Vocalist Ben Felix enriches that initial coaxing with his brooding bassline before adding his equally alluring vocals to the mix. Subsequently the gentle beginning ignites; guitarist Joshua Jacobs’s riffs and hooks casting an enticing fiery web within which the punchy beats of Pravir Ramasundaram pounce. By now metal and classic rock threads are colluding with punk and pop rock dynamics, the track merging the familiar with the adventurous and unpredictable.

It is a strong and stirring start soon eclipsed by Nevernia, a track baring its pop punk instincts and heart from its first spirited breath. Swinging rhythms and riffs burst from the speakers, the earthier tones of Felix as animated as the sounds providing the galvanic incitement around them. Again imagination and great twists add to the character and temptation of the song, moments of almost new wave like enterprise only adding to its stature and persuasion before Tomorrow’s Revolution steps forth with a more classic metal lined proposal but still with a pop infused punk ‘n’ roll breath to its rock holler.

Both tracks revel in the multi-flavoured breeding of the band’s sound, the fresh and familiar once more making a highly appealing proposition and riven by a strong vein of imagination as proven again by Long Way Home. The band is widely known because of their working ethic, constant touring, and very impressive discography that includes releases such as The Things We Can’t Forget, Meaningless Expectations EP, and Under The Mask. These experienced musicians are presenting another excellent record comprising eight melodic hardcore hits that could easily pair to even bigger names in the genre. Still Burning blasts with remorseless energy, which has been saturated with multiple sonic wonderments, mainly composed of thoughtful arrangements and exceptional musicianship. The group solely relies on compelling guitar shreddings, which have been precisely submerged under magnificent melodic sequences. Both guitar channels have been equally polarized, so every notable sonic implementation is more than hearable throughout the entire album. These guitar dualities certainly create such an energetic atmosphere, but they also provide a lot of opportunities for various low-end maneuvers, performed through a high variety of catchy basslines. Nothing would sound so compact without vigorous drumming performance, which certainly delivers another perspective on the entire record. The vocals are enhancing the overall listening experience with gracious servings of ferocious screams. This particular singing technic plays the main role and acts as a centerpiece among presented instrumentations. Each composition has been thoughtfully arranged according to some modern hardcore standards. Wake The Dead possesses all the qualities of the contemporaries on the current worldwide hardcore punk scene, but I find their ideas more interesting, mainly because of their abilities to compose catchy melodic hardcore songs that burst with lots of dynamics without losing elements of greatness along the way. Still Burning comes with an astonishing artwork of lionesses biting the giant griffin, while the flames are approaching from all the sides. This piece of art itself is such an awesome addition to a brilliant recording that will certainly place this great French hardcore punk band to the top. Still Burning has been published on a standard black vinyl record and compact disc housed in a jewel case. Tonota 80 transmits delightful harmonies through recognizable dirty crunch distortion, so characteristic for British guitar amps. However, all the notes are more than hearable, and complete polyphonic symphony liberates gracious dosages of delightful moments throughout the entire record. The shelf-life of full-length albums is a lot shorter and Spotify is the prevalent platform for discovering new music. With a lot more to prove in an industry where the art (sadly) seems to be increasingly more disposable, some bands have reacted musically with shorter songs and/or less material per release. I won't be presumptuous in my attempted assessment of the new EP "Nebulosity" from New Jersey's (Damn) This Desert Air; what I will say is that DTDA have made a hard-hitting release that will please even the most impatient of rock fans, all while honing the sound they've worked to craft since their last release "Pyramids" in 2013.

"Body Anchor (Back in Atlantis)" opens the EP with a huge chorus. This is called a "pro-move." Drums kick us straight into it, followed by a big major chord and Craig's strong vocal delivery which is truly a highlight on this release. The lyrics are a survival tale of someone grappling with their own self-destructive whims. "I throw away device, rationale asking, 'why, why are you so manic?'" The song creates a center for the rest of the EP to work from, and I really like that about the sequencing here.

"Reach" begins with a warm guitar driven intro and the band comes in pretty straightaway into a soft verse that builds up through a two chord pre-chorus, and into another big chorus where Craig's vocals are the star. The guitar intro comes back for a second verse, but this time, we see the appearance of what sounds like an organ, mixed with piano and acoustic guitar. "Lonely Train" works great as a third track with a reverby delayed guitar intro that brought back memories of 2000s post-hardcore, ala Circa Survive and a more tame Deftones. The EP closes with the ballad-esque "Cauterize." The song could've easily been transformed into just another novel "acoustic" track (sometimes those songs are fucking really good, and other times they are not), but they went with an interesting format here: a picked bass with a chorus effect on it and some supplemental synth, where Craig can really allow for his dynamic abilities to showcase here. Many releases aim at vamping up the listener for a big ending, but this one finds a huge catharsis in ending with a minimal presentation with sociopolitical lyrical overtones.

The production from esteemed producer Chris Badami of Portrait Studios allows this band to clearly do what they do best. The songs are meant to be played loud and the emotive hooks will make you want to sing along, but there’s definitely an edgy snarl in the fuzzy guitar riffs and rusty-sounding vocals that deftly blends the melodic punk stylings of bands like None More Black and The Lawrence Arms.

Huge up-tempo guitar riffs characterize songs like “Making Plans,” and “Mostly Downs,” but frontman Anthony Truzzolino’s raspy growl conveys serious feelings of pain and struggle on nearly every song. He confronts some serious demons on “Send For A Hospital,” directly admitting that he’s “heading straight for a hole in the ground and I’m bearing this weight of a soul that’s been bound to a lifetime of suffering.” There’s a bit of a feel-good reprieve on “5 Day Bender,” as Truzzolino nicely paints a portrait of an alcohol-infused bender through the scenic Rocky Mountains with a soundtrack of guitar crunch and propulsive drumming. Isolation and fear return to the forefront on “Stay Home,” a song with a piercing melody and a towering wall of fuzzy guitars that starkly recounts some solitary moments of self-medicating and reflection. It sets the stage for the more down-tempo album closer, “Gouge,” where Truzzolino takes his matter of fact lyrical style to another level, describing a heartbreak so severe that it required eliminating two of his five senses to overcome it. The melodies and hooks are plentiful on Patterns, but the lyrics are dark and absolutely crushing.
