Yeah, they played what a lot would refer to as the less-modern definition of screamo. However, it's not fair to limit the band to one genre alone when their music traveled so far beyond the restraints of screamo. Voice is an album that showcases their versatility, with both male and female voices, harmonies and shrill screams alike and a generally raw sound. And their words surely aren‘t sung, spoken or screamed in vain. 1905 had a message.

Voice kicks off with "Introduction," a track whose name is rather deceiving, as it isn't much of a musical indication of what's to come in the rest of the album. After nearly a minute of garbled noise, the album really begins with "Control," featuring the soft voice of a female with light, mid-paced music in the background. Halfway into the song, a male voice is added into the concoction and before you get accustomed to their delicate harmonies, both once-subdued voices revert to frenetic screams and back again in an almost bi-polar fashion. This form comes to be a staple throughout Voice.

"Quote" quickly breaks up the album's short-lived consistency by remaining slow-paced and acoustic throughout the whole track. Since the soft voice of a female was already introduced on Voice, a track such as "Quote" doesn't disrupt the cohesiveness of the album.

The album's title track resumes the pattern of combination male/female vocals screaming/singing, right into perhaps the band's strongest, most memorable track "Can't Change Everything." The song quickly builds from soft "oooh"s and light guitar work to a fast-paced drum beat and shrill screams of "Just because I can't change everything, doesn't mean I can't change anything." Once the song reaches the midpoint, the singing comes to a halt and words are quickly spoken: "To envision a world without chains but recognize that we, as individuals, can only chip away at the links. One at a time, day by day. To have the ability to wage quiet wars in our everyday lives, and recognize the subtle victories when they happen…." These words only scratch the surface of the wisdom the band offers the listener. "One brick today is one less for tomorrow" wraps up the nearly three-minute, chaotic track.

The nearly all instrumental, guitar-oriented track "Side by Side" soon follows with only the lines "All the things that we oppose and all the things that we are for...just like the things that we despise alongside things that we adore" present to break it up. "Side by Side" works as a smooth transition track to the completely acoustic instrumental "Missing."

The final few surprises on Voice come near the album's end. "Throw" throws the album a curveball with its upbeat folk-punk, acoustic sound and politically-minded lyrics ("Turn your tanks around. Use the metal to build a playground"). "Silhouette," a beautiful song composed entirely on the piano and the spoken-word track "A Conversation" help to wrap up the album in a memorable way.

This Voice is one you won't soon forget." - Meg Reinecker / Punk News

Rachel Jacobs / Liza Kate split 7" -

Rachel Jacobs and lisa kate combine for a split 7” of passionate singer/song writer tunes.

Respira ‎– A Still Silhouette CD

"Damn, this is really cool. Great emo/indie rock with an appropriately thick and rugged sound, ample brightness, clean guitars mixed with distorted guitars, lots of panning and layering, etc. The material is well driven by the rhythm section, guitars playing the central role just in front of superb singing vocals that are perfect for this style - not at all whiny or anything like that, just nice, calm, emphatic singing. I'm shocked that the songs are really long and drawn-out with a lot of lengthy instrumental passages in them, not in a "jam band" sense or any of that shit, but in more of a loose, repetitious sort of manner - routinely clocking in at over six, seven, or even eight minutes! It's really somber music, nothing upbeat or poppy at all, but instead really quiet and fairly laidback in most instances. "Thinning Threads" is just a wonderfully moving composition, while others such as "I'm a Hypocrite and a Liar" are more energetic and mildly technical as far as some of the time signatures and guitar riffs go. Things do get slightly harder edged at times, notably in "Cuts in the Shape of a Star", but they always shift the dynamic back to something softer, which really works out great to keep the sheer length of the disc moving without getting stale. Recorded by Alex Newport (Fudge Tunnel/Theory of Ruin), this disc has a great sound: Dense percussion, lush clean guitars, thick (but not "heavy") distorted guitars - nothing too jangly or anything, dry vocals with no layering (which works nice for the style of their delivery), and a really clean mix so that the interaction between instruments is all really clear. Very fucking cool. I don't have one gripe. The layout is nice and basic, using only white and light yellow, with some images of birds, and small, clean text. That's all there is. No lyrics are included, only some lineup/recording information, and a rather interesting phrase across the center of the booklet: "We hold each other. By thinning threads. That knot at the center. And break at the ends. These strings that strangle. An empty chest. With a slow rotation. For a world at rest. A warm addiction. Wound in these threads. In this stale repetition. Do you wish you were dead?" This is great stuff. Once more I'm slightly reminded of Boilermaker, and even though I'm not too familiar with the Deep Elm label this does seem to me as though it would fit in well with some of that stuff that I have heard... but this is so refreshing. Much more intense and meaningful than most of the emo that I've heard in the last several years. Absolutely check this out if you're into the genre. This is way more mature than all of the music that's basically turning emo into a "bad word", so don't let the fact that I use the term here turn you away." - Aversion Online

Songs Of August ‎– 1902 CD

Solo album by Nick Kirby, guitarist/vocalist of the seasoned DC political punk band 1905. I like how the bass sounds on this record, it definitely stands out because Del Cielo is a 3 piece so it's easy to follow how it pulls the songs along. I find it perennially tricky to describe Cashel's music. I'm tempted to refer to Pedro the Lion, because she has a number of things in common with David Bazan -- she tends to write songs that have fairly deliberate tempos but that don't feel slow even when they are, and like Bazan, she often sings in a slower tempo than she plays: what are effectively quarter notes in the vocal melody take a half or full measure in the instrumental part. Lyrically, Cashel also tends to be interested in morality and ambiguity. On the other hand, there's the whole avowedly Christian aspect of Pedro the Lion tyat makes it a potentially misleading referent, and Bazan's songs are more narrative-oriented whereas Cashel is more impressionistic. Unlike many acoustic singer songwriters, she uses single- or double-note figures at least as much as she uses arpeggios or strums chords. The band, made up of former members of the illustrious Cable Car Theory, Cattle Press, Most Precious Blood, and Ripping Christ, brings passion, vision, and fury to their music. Members have been integral parts of the Staten Island and New York City hardcore scene for decades, recording, releasing, and playing defiant, exhilarating melodic hardcore and punk. The release is no exception. Opening with The Fable Mantis, guitars swell and soar, and vocalist John Farag delivers powerful lyrics with his distinctive voice, in the vein of bands like Hot Water Music, Fine Day, and Three. The record conveys social foreboding, political mistrust, and the everyday trials of four chaps struggling to make sense of this madness and live with intention. Joe Dell Aquila of With Resistance recorded this at Exetar Recording. Daniel Hukill has been deeply steeped in DIY show booking, playing and organizing for years - he started and ran a venue in Auburn, Alabama called the w6 house for several years before moving back to his home state of California where he met Jamey Anderson. Jamey and Daniel began the band the Vonneguts. Matt Bonuiuto joined the band in Portland and eventually transformed to RESIN HITS. Hukill has also made a name for himself as a notable visual artist, and released a lo-fit version of some of these songs under the name Resin Trickster. Borrowing from diverse influences such as The Kinks and The Lapse, Hukill's voice is emotive, lyrics are gracious, and overall, this record carves out a unique place for the band in the current landscape of indie rock. Hukill, who wrote most of these songs at the home of Exotic Fever Records owner - Katy Otto, talks about the writing process, "A lot of these songs were written while on tour so they carry a detached or third person voice. Attempting to understand my life while thousands of miles away from home, sometimes makes it easier to put things into perspective. The album was recorded in Portland, Oregon by Marcello Spina on 1/2" 16-track tape. All songs were written by Daniel Hukill. Jamey Anderson played drums, Matt Bonuiuto played guitars and bass, and Daniel Hukill played bass, guitars and sang. How To Cut A Rock features contributions from Dan Eccles (Richmond Fontaine, Fernando), who on Resin Trickster and Joel Hatmaker (DMV, p.o.p.itilopitius), who leant guitars to Peace is Power and Burning Ball and Canopy. RESIN HITS has seen a number of incarnations and line up changes, and is currently in a process of regrowth in Los Angeles, where Hukill has taken on a troop of three brothers as his new touring band.

Ultra Dolphins ‎– Alien Baby CD

3 years in the making, Ultra Dolphins are back with their 2nd Full Length, Alien Baby. From the haunting piano dirge to the sarcastic pop anthem, the songs remain a stark reminder of the volatile nature of life and love. The trio plays MG s songs with a constant purpose, setting a tone for lyrical flourishes, asking questions that have no answer, searching or meaning in a sadly meaningless world. MG has been writing songs for more years than he cares to remember, and after touring the world playing bass and piano in Victory At Sea and piano for the Thalia Zedek band, he set down to bring his own songs to life. His band, the pair have played together for years in various projects, adds the depth and nuance to take well-crafted piano-singer songs into flesh and blood rock, dynamically charged forays into MG s past and future. However, to perform on stage on her own was never as much fun for her as to write the songs. It took several attempts before the current line-up, consisting of Kristof Kuenssler (drums), Stefan Diessner (bass/guitar) and Ulrich Kalliske (bass/guitar), turned out to be the perfect one. Perfect indeed, if you just look at the long term connection between all 4 members, may it be their close friendship or just being on tour and playing shows together.. it just naturally evolved. So now, after 10 years, the first selftitled Dropout Patrol album is about to be released, an album that's personal and so very close to the things that get life moving forward and things that get lost, change or just fail along the way. Sotzko observed precisely, found just the right words for things that repeat themselves but yet, stay unique. ..and in the end, "being observed" becomes a major topic itself. Loss, recovery, survival, and hope take center stage in the title track, and then wind their way through all 11 songs in this defiant collection. Thematically grandiose? A bit. But disarmingly genuine at the same time, as is the hallmark of this band that has honed an uncanny ability to write inspirational anthems with a sense of humor that keeps them believable. Indie rock irony is finally dead and The Shondes offer a potent alternative. Rousing and raucous, sincere and spirited, this is what happens when the legacies of Bikini Kill and Bruce Springsteen join forces in Brooklyn s hardest-working band. When powerhouse vocalist Louisa Rachel Solomon sings I need a dream for right now (Nights Like These), you believe her. The line doesn t come off as a pop cliché, but instead as an honest plea on an album that unapologetically dreams of a brighter future, and convinces you to take it seriously. Says Solomon, If there s one thing I learned from Riot Grrrl when I was really young, it s that you shouldn t censor your sorrow, rage, and joy in your songs... even if you re afraid it ll sound super cheesy. And so The Shondes invite you and your cheesy feelings in, too. The Garden is, after all, all of ours, a well-worn metaphorical landscape that the band embraces to its fullest populist potential. Nothing More Whole Than a Broken Heart is a fist-pumping paean to growing up, and borrows its refrain from a Yiddish proverb (befitting a band whose moniker is Yiddish for disgraces ). Solomon explains The Garden is an album about the kind of growing up you do over and over again. And indeed, the band s fourth outing seems emblematic of fully coming into their own. Described by Producer Tony Maimone (founding member of seminal experimental rock band Pere Ubu) as a band of scrappers, they have certainly fought for their recognition, building a devoted fanbase over eight years on the road, reliably offering their sweat and heartfelt emotion up night after night. The Garden, recorded at Brooklyn s Studio G, may finally be the album that captures the signature live energy that makes this band so special to their fans. Peter Ames Carlin says "The Garden has the same wild finesse and seething humanity of the Shondes' earlier work -- except now it sounds better than ever.... Violinist Elijah Oberman rocks his instrument like the world is ending. Louisa Solomon sings like her soul is leaping out of her mouth. Every time I wondered when the band would break big. With this game-changing wave of critical praise, followed by a national tour with punk legends Against Me!, the scrappy, heart-on-their- sleeves New Yorkers were truly coming into their own, and they set right to work on their follow-up, Brighton (Exotic Fever 2016). On this record we find the band delivering their signature power hooks, charming group harmonies, and clap-along breakdowns with a new ease and sophistication. It feels lighter, more confident, less forced; where they once fought for hope, willed anthems into being, they now sound effortlessly alive. This is in no small part due to the founding pair (best friends Oberman and Solomon) alighting on the right lineup. Drummer Alex Smith and guitarist Courtney Robbins were both recruited in 2015, with Robbins relocating from Tucson. There is an unmissable and even magical cohesion among the four, as though with this level of musicianship, a burden has lifted and the music can finally bloom into the satisfying, spirited pop-rock it always wanted to be. They have been described as Bruce Springsteen-meets-Bikini Kill and on Brighton they add serious pop appeal to the formula that will have you punching your fist in the air despite yourself. With Smith s cracking snare rousing any listener to full attention, her rock-solid drumming anchors the absolute powerhouse that is Robbins s guitar. Un-ironically revelling in a wailing solo on one track and creating a tapestry of delicate, twinkling overlays on the next, it dramatically amplifies each song s emotional pay-off. Springsteen biographer Peter Ames Carlin said Solomon has better-stand-back vocals...one of the biggest voices in pop, and she has been compared to the likes of Chrissie Hynde and Corin Tucker, but on Brighton the band provides a foundation for both her signature belt and a gentler head voice rarely utilized on past records. Oberman s alternatingly keening and raucous violin is its perfect complement, shining in solos and skillful counterpoint. The overall effect is a more dynamic version of a beloved rock band; losing none of their anthemic power, they have crafted eminently joyful, emotionally complex rock songs. In 2015 Solomon married poet Miller Oberman (yes, much to fans delight, he is violinist Elijah s brother), and many of these songs are in some sense love songs, though the most consistent theme of the record is transformation, steering it away from the pitfalls of pop cliche, and toward something much more interesting. The Shondes have always prided themselves on their ability to get a cynic singing along, and they've never been in finer form than on this collection in which love, neglect, survival, despair, and hope are inescapably bound. Keep in mind that what may be called indie rock versus what traditional indie rock is, has changed but that jangly rock sound on an independently owned record label really hasn’t. While we typically celebrate great indie rock, occasionally a band comes along who has their own take on that sound and makes it their own. We’ve been aware of Houston indie rock trio Cool Moon since they got their start, and on their new album The Devil Doesn’t Always Need An Advocate they prove that some bands can place their own stamp on a genre that rarely changes.

If you’ve heard the band’s debut album, then the opener “Overflow” won’t feel like a far stretch. Keep in mind that’d not a bad thing, as it’s a great opening song to essentially remind fans who you were and the sound that you brought from before this new release. But with that said, the second song “Red Pills” begins to expanse into new techniques and overall structures in how the band presents a song. Embodying touches of nineties pacing, the upbeat beginning gets tossed for a slower and more melodic verse before the band returns to that speedy start. It’s this fast, slow, fast again approach that really opens the album up.

In fact, change is what this three piece does best. While “Flawless” reminds us of the cheerful rock that lived within the eighties, so much of the album is definitely indie rock but really it’s being done like no one else. “Tragic Tale of Growing Up” has arrangements that steer from what you may be used to, “Dream” hits hard and heavy without beating you over the head with an idea and “List” has a build that’s extraordinarily skilled in how it plays out. But even amidst these gems including the catchy notes of “Sleep,” the largest standout here is the song “Crave.” For starters, the chords utilized at the opening of the song sound like they were invented by the band themselves. The way they seem to step up a ladder slowly as they traverse notes is so wonderfully different, that it’s hard to listen to the rest of the album without starting with this song first. Moments of soft bells and vocals alone make the band’s stamp on the genre their own, as they prove that sometimes a band can take an untouched sound and mix it up just enough to make it that much more interesting." - Closed Caption

Rainbow Crimes ‎– We Disappear cassette

"Philly dark pop band Rainbow Crimes just shared their debut release, We Disappear. The sound of guitars and bass almost swallow the vocals and put them in the background, which is sometimes a little sad because the lyrics are beautifully poetic. The entire album is great to kick back and relax to. The album has a summer vibe, so it’s perfect to bring a little warmth and good feelings into the minds of the audience.
Track one “Follow You” has amazing bass solos, which resemble the unplugged cover version of “The Man Who Sold The World” by Nirvana, but less grungy. “Who Will Greet You at Home” has more dominant vocals, which get accompanied by an up-tempo beat that invites listeners to dance along in the living room.
Following this, the album becomes a little slower with “Low Sun,” the vocals now almost feel like singing right into your ears, which gives the whole song an intimate aura, especially with the clapping solo. At this moment, it is just the band and the individual listener. “Telephone” continues with a slow tempo, and at this point, it’s easy to get lost in the angelic vocals. “In Event” starts rather quiet with a little piano solo but gains on tempo and feelings mid-song. It’s the high point of the song. The start of the title track “Giant Woman” has almost fantastic elements, with acoustic instruments and the hypnotic voice.
“Universe” and “Tightrope Walker” are probably the most relaxing songs on the album, they feel like a lazy Sunday at home, comfortable and like there is nothing to worry about. Both songs seem to melt into each other and it’s not particularly easy to distinguish them from each other. Compared to those two songs “Halcyon Blue” has a darker feeling to it. An ominous sound with hopeful strakes that continue to glimmer through during the entirety of the song. “Rooftop” has the potential to become someone’s being-in-love-anthem. In the beginning, it’s dreamy pop mixed with heartfelt lyrics and vocals, but then the song becomes stronger and electric—a little like relationships.
“Ground on Feet” gives the album a whole circle moment, the sound gets grungier again, but the vocals stay soft and almost hopeful. Cool Moon reincarnates that same feeling with a fresh, new face. Frontwoman Andrea Lisi’s vocals, both soft and brash, embodies something akin to Corin Tucker mixed with Liz Phair. The music, reminiscent of bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Jawbreaker, feature strong, crunchy guitars, driving bass lines, and captivating drum rhythms that perfectly complement and create a musical experience far greater than the sum of its parts.

Cool Moon’s third album “Crossing the Finish Line”, to be released June 3, 2022 by Exotic Fever Records, highlights the band’s energy creating a record that is fun, fast, rock n’ roll, wistful and heartfelt.
