The group uses such instruments as metal garbage, damaged electronic devices, toy instruments, electronically processed hurdy-gurdy, saxophone, field recordings and concrète sounds, objects of everyday use and sine wave generators. The band aims to calibrate the listeners perception into a channel of different consciousness experimenting with the time of concerts, as was witnessed with the Respondorium project that started at 5 am; or literally asking the audience to lay down in a series of concerts for dreaming: Dream Machine. Sound becomes the borderline point of experience. A very important element of the group s activity is also working with space, as in the case of their performing in a synagogue in Klimontów, a fire station in Zduny, an old slaughterhouse in Tuczno, a concert for a highlighted and amplified forest, and a multimedia inversion of the sensation of going up and down in an underground passage in Poznan. The album Kaktuus is an interpretation and translation of a cactus experience into the language of sounds. The compositions are arranged as consecutive stages of the contact with the cactus, starting from the preparations, such as peeling off the skin and spines, and going through all the stages of the sensations up to the extreme effects. Those sharp, lined images adorning the sleeves are matched by the curt, vivid phrases and descriptions of the lyrics. Avoiding anything approaching a verse/chorus structure it is as if Lisa Jayne has transformed those images into words, while Andy Pyne draws on post-punk, synth pop and elements of dance music to create the raw, minimalist electronics bolstered by an undercurrent of rhythmic styles. It's an intriguing satisfying blend of electronics and experimentation in the vein of Suicide and PiL with vocals in the spirit of Ari-Up and Polystyrene encapsulating the brutality, vacuousness and sterility of the modern world. Gloriosa and Void Axis were great albums and there's no let-up with Turn Back Metropolis. Given wider exposure Map 71 could easily find more willing ears.

'Cyanide White' pulses to throbbing, jabbering electro tones over taut rhythms, broken only by stabs of synth chime and the occasional flourish of drum roll. In that English accented voice Lisa Jayne's delivery is rhythmic and almost lilting. Vivid and descriptive, one excerpt runs: "For boy-cut perfection, limbs marble blue, your only deception, suicide pact" from a text that feels subject to juxtaposition.'Siren Tank', meanwhile, aligns darting beaty electro rhythms over rolling floor toms, electrified by spurts of synth-pop chime stepping up a gear with the addition of quickened hi-hats. Andy Pyne makes a rare vocal appearance here surrounding Lisa Jayne's cut-up observations of club life with a rasp of "mayhem nouvelle". The disparate elements combining electro rhythms, tribal beats and edgy punk vocals have a rawness and energy which could be considered a mutant form of post-punk. 'Scissor Kiss Experiment' continues that urgency with a propulsive hypnotic energy in its cyclical jazzy drumming and twitchy electronics. In poised and measured tones Lisa Jayne's offers up colourful, spiritual abstract prose appending each line with the title, surrounded by electro claps, fragmented effects and sound squiggles allowing a dance music elements to permeate the hypnotic rhythm.

Map 71 delve back to early eighties industrial electronics on 'Spirograph' where analogue sequences pulse over sustained synth drone. Map 71 songs are usually economic bristling with subtle nuances but this one is busier than usual and embellished with whirring Radiophonic bleeps and short flurries of melodic synth contrasting with Lisa Jayne's slow, poised enunciations, in a text based around claustrophobia and oppression, highlighting the intended disconnect between music and voice that characterises much of Map 71 songs.

Something I've failed to pick up on before is the complexity which arises from Lisa Jayne's lyrics. On previous albums those words appeared more narrative and poetry based. Now those evocative words and astute observations of (sub)urban life, daubed in colour palettes, referencing nature, the cosmos and magic seem subject to fold-in and cut-up techniques. Perhaps, I'm wrong and they are just a random assortment of descriptive phrases and couplets. Either way, the specific meaning of the songs is obscured and harder to decipher leaving only hints, clues and feelings but within those flowing rhythmic soundscapes it certainly works as Map 71 are doing something unique and inventive.

Map 71 are at their bleakest on the title track. Opening with unaccompanied voice it creeps forward with edgy dirge like synths and drums pared back into stark beats. Minimal and dub like, shape-shifting grating effects envelop Lisa Jayne's unaffected delivery about the oppression of sterile tower block life, a living dystopia in an architectural dream gone wrong as piercing squeals and shrieks bring this to an end.

This, like their previous albums co-released by Fourth Dimension Records and Foolproof Projects, is great though. It's obvious that Theme are aware of their musical heritage (aside from Splintered, Johnson was involved in the improvised Husk, while Carter was part of the noise rock outfit Heroin as well as producing experimental ambient sounds in his solo project The Fields of Hay) and more so than their earlier releases Theme are keen to incorporate these distinct entities into their varied musical excursions.

Superficially the opening track 'Enough Is Never' features a beguiling interplay of viola, marimba, and eastern drones, overlayen with layers of looped and cut-up vocals. That however is only part of the story. 'Enough Is Never' is furnished with thudding electronic stabs, mesmeric drones, and smashed glass effects. The entire track encompasses droneology, experimental post-punk and post-industrial electronics. But it is the use of voices that are most prevalent here; with the main spoken vocal delivered in distinctive post-punk English tones, but, like most of the vocals on No Emotions Catered For, they are layered, chopped-up and subject to treatments and effects, offering different spins on the inherent messages, that seem to comment on contemporary feelings in futile and paranoid times.

Theme work so many disparate styles into a track that it often starts one way and finishes on another. Unfurling to morose acoustic guitar strum over a loose backdrop of bells the expansive 'Another Context Revealed' is a case in point. As guitars continue in Swans like monotony Lukasz Kozak and Olga Drenda, in a series of passages of accented vocals, occasionally shadowed by a chant like accompaniment, ponder topics such as religion, god, family, love, amongst others. Is it a poison? Is it a cure? It's all a matter of context, we're told. The experimental touches, treated clarinet bleeps and airy hissing drone that appear underneath gradually take centre-stage just as it switches to field recordings of lapping water before settling into a vivid concoction of rippling water and oscillating eastern drones. With the addition of a drum rhythm it begins to take the skeletal shape of a rock band but rather than develop it further it simply fades out - which given the twists and turns the track goes through the ending is quite surprising." - Compulsion Online (Released by Idioblast Recordings)

Various ‎– Presently Untitled 2 x 7"

"Released to correspond with Fourth Dimension Records' night at Cafe OTO on October 19th, this collects exclusive tracks by each of the artists playing on said night and a few others whose work can also be found on the label. Each of the artists needs no real introduction, but is united in the sense that they are committed to exploring a wide range of sounds and ideas within their own music. On the first disc, represented by plain white labels, Richard Youngs continues to confound in his approach to dronework, Theme morph between abstract electronics and power-noise at will, Sion Orgon plays alien pop and Alternative TV deliver a hard hitting pulse-driven song only still rendered post-punk by Mark Perry's distinctive vocals. On the second disc, represented by black labels, Extnddntwrk (Andrew of Sleaford Mods) is in twisted downtempo mode, Map 71 continue to blend mighty percussion and electronics with battle-scarred narration and Kleistwahr prove that their often devastating and immersive sound can be contained in a short piece. All seven tracks add up to a mini-album's worth of music. Extremely limited, only 350 of these were pressed and only 250 of those are for retail. We then proposed releasing a CD album of such work, where Richard uses the same guitar alongside real-time street sounds, birdsong, tape loops, synth, FM radio and runout grooves to create a setting that's comparatively gentler than most of his work thus far on Fourth Dimension Records. 'Iker', meaning 'visitation' in Basque (and pronounced more like 'eeker', apparently!), collects five songs wilfully displaying Richard's prowess with the guitar whilst placing his delicate strumming of it alongside subtle elements that accord the proceedings with a hue unmistakably his own. If interested in the more stripped-down approach of some of John Fahey's work or Sir Richard Bishop's own impressionist playing then 'Iker' should tick all the boxes. Arriving from a period in music when there were countless such groups up and down the UK, and around the world, who'd initially been inspired by punk but then attempted to channel the energy and attitude into sometimes very different musical shapes, The Midnight Choir began as an idea of Simon Hinkler's of Artery. Leading other members of said group mostly pseudonymously into this new guise, alongside the late Dave Loukes from Quite Unnerving on vocals, the group themselves went on to cement links with Pulp and The Mission through the comings and goings of their personnel. Much like Artery themselves, there was more to The Midnight Choir than a simple doffing of the cap to the Banshees or Joy Division or whoever else at the time had done so much of the groundwork for groups similarly inspired but wanting to break away from the trappings of punk. The group were possessed of strong abilities to hone their craft to the point they had the potential to reach a far broader audience without losing the chemistry they clearly had at the outset. Shifting easily from a ravaged monochromatic sound to one rife with different hues, The Midnight Choir operated in that space when post-punk music took on new forms as independent music came into greater dominance throughout the 1980s. Like many others, they slipped through the cracks without really deserving to. It is for this reason, as well as the music itself of course, that this collection is not only long overdue, but more than justified.

Kleistwahr – In The Guts Of A Year CD

Since 2014 Gary Mundy of Ramleh has been releasing most of his solo work through Fourth Dimension. With its occasional subtle nods to No Wave and murky shades perfectly ploughed with the help of white hot distortion, Lust in Peace does exactly what it's supposed to do in delivering on the promise of the debut.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2606/0952/products/hal_eb4fd3a8-ddb4-468d-84a0-a8cd2f9357b6.jpg?v=1659035840
limbs-bin-compassion-vision-cd
Limbs Bin – Compassion & Vision CD

Limbs Bin – Compassion & Vision CD

Recorded by a quartet of grubby fools in a miserable warehouse in Cleveland, Compassion & Vision sees Limbs Bin founder Josh Landes joined by a cast of repellent perverts, Wyatt Howland, Erik Brown and David Russell, to deliver maybe the worst masterpiece to date. I’ve already mentioned Mundy’s talent as a musician, but more important is his humanity. He probably won’t thank me for writing this, but his approach is atypically sensitive for a genre that relies more often on misanthropy and aggression. In an interview I did with him and his alter ego in Ramleh, Anthony diFranco, Mundy explained to me that the lyrics on their most recent (and astounding) Malediction album include the line “Please forgive me” repeated over and over, like a despairing, self-flagellating mantra." - Joseph Burnett / Dusted Magazine

"For hardcore noise fans, this may not initially be an evolution that’s entirely to their liking. As the album opens with distorted, gothic organ and synth drones on ‘The Last Chain That Bound, The Spoiler Now Rends’, their expansive, emotionally-resonant melody bolstered by Mundy’s signature vocal ululations. There are a number of notable vocalists operating in the field of noise, but none carries the weight of feeling that Gary Mundy does, especially when he’s recording as Kleistwahr, even though the words themselves are unintelligible. Instead, his vocalisations become fractured laments drowned out by the elements, a lone voice railing, unheard, at the ignominies of life. Speaking to me via Facebook, Mundy mentioned being inspired by reflections on the past, wasted time, war and faith (or its failures, more precisely), and all of those themes come across in the tones of regret and anger he imbues his voice with, regardless of the music it is deployed over." - Joseph Burnett / The Quietus

Alternative TV – Dark Places 12"

‘Dark Places’, the newest e.p., expands the mantle set by 'Opposing Forces', introducing four songs cascading between full-on rock to a kind of abstract minimalist electronics approach perfectly in keeping with Alternative TV’s occasional traverses to the furthest reaches. Short bursts of angular flex are heavily propelled by depth-charge rhythms, wry lyrical musings on modern living, and sensibilities hatched from years of experience in the worlds of sound art, abstract music, industrialised junk-noise and related areas have manifested in the perfect follow up to 2018’s 'Buddhist Nihilism' album on Harbinger Sound. Aided by Christian Weber on bass and Alexandre Babel on drums, Joke lays on a battery of electronics, loops, field recordings and samples to complement mostly semi-spoken vocals that appear like they’ve been swept from the overflowing gutters of a shopping centre into a huge ball of malaise that can only be laughed at as world leaders look on perplexed. Exactly as the title suggests, 'Lunatic Asylum' depicts a world in absolute disarray as the seams binding it together slowly fall apart to reveal jesters whose best attempts to glue everything back in place are built on bigger lies more transparent than ever. Meanwhile, citizens of the developed world turn on each other for the stupidest of reasons or grow fatter with their descent into an ignorance nourished by half-baked cultural nuggets pre-packaged and sold as great and awe-inspiring work. As if they were not generated here but received from there. They simply sound otherworldly. So, what is their actual address in space and time, as well as the sender’s or the receiver’s? How are we to identify them?

We could of course try to single out the sonic settings and processes we hear according to the technology that produced them (unconventionally played musical instruments and diverse electronic sources), but this strategy would be counterproductive in terms of poetics. Sőrés is not a technocrat and the titles he gives to his pieces reference philosophical concerns that are represented both conceptually and sonically. In his dystopic sonic fiction he is a time traveler, but not the one we know from science fiction; rather than going against time to generate an extraterrestrial experience, he composes present, past, and future the way we compose our percepts, affects, desires, or utopias. Once the sound he or his sonic collaborators create starts to evolve in space-time, the battle to control its identity begins. This does not necessarily mean mastering a sound in terms of appropriation, but grasping it conceptually, purposefully registering its existence in order to use its physicality as a potential means of expression. Naturally, not all generated sounds are worthy of Sőrésʼs aesthetic attention or utilization, only those that his experience identifies as suitable vehicles for significant differentiation. This happens in real-time, composed improvisation, scored for five musicians; on this recording are trumpet player (Franz Hautzinger), two cellists (Anthea Caddy, Judith Hamann), sound effects producer (Mihály Kádár), and Sőrés himself playing viola with the help of various objects and devices.

Kleistwahr – For the Lives Once Lived CD

"If you have been paying attention to the albums that have been released by Fourth Dimension Records during recent years, you should understand that his solo music has retained the molten intensity it has always been propelled by since Kleistwahr was founded in the early 1980s. While the work occasionally seems as though it draws from the same dusty religious setting as some of Messiaen's wonderful organ compositions, there's still an all-encompassing blanket of ravaged psychedelia firmly laced with blood-flecked barbs to help counter this. When Kleistwahr's music seems poised to elevate the atmospheric gestures towards the sublime and elegiac, there's always a gaping maw lined with razor-edged teeth lurking nearby to help keep all those lofty hopes and expectations from getting above themselves. For the Lives Once Lived may also surprise many with its opening song, "Rotten Boroughs," which both stands out from the rest of the album yet makes sense as part of it. Originally recorded as a one-off, these tracks feature connections to what at the time seemed like a fervent enough local scene via the involvement of not only Slob Tapes' founder and early Attrition live percussionist Bob Oliver, but also Alan Rider of Stress and the Adventures In Reality label. Serving as another document of an incredibly fertile time in music, this album perfectly illustrates just how far some of those concerned could go with limited resources. As Alan Rider himself explains:

'24th August 1983. The scene: a small and chaotic terraced house in Craven Street, Coventry. Bob Oliver, main man of eclectic tape label Slob Tapes, and Alan Rider, head of early industrial label Adventures in Reality Recordings (Attrition, Stress, Irsol, SPK, Test Department, Muslimgauze and others) and one half of electronic duo Stress, have come together with the mysterious Cryptic Z Mostmen to record a single track, ‘Mummies and Madmen Grow Dark in the Sun’, over the course of an afternoon. It was an inventive period in music, where anything was possible and Coventry had its own very underground experimental electronic scene comprising Attrition, Stress, Irsol, Sea of Wires and the Adventures in Reality label. Everyone shared equipment, accommodation, and often band members. Bob was a drummer/percussionist who would later perform live with Attrition. He went by the name Gamla Stan on recordings. Alan performed and recorded in Stress, released early Attrition material and created and operated Human League style slide and film projections on the band’s UK and European tours. Mummies and Madmen was never intended to have a future. It was formed for the duration of that one track, a mix of throbbing drum machine, synthesiser feedback, PiL style bass and scratchy, reverb drenched, guitar that contorted, evolved and mutated over the course of 20 minutes. Fourteen months later Gamla Stan and Cryptic Z Mostmen came together again to record a second track, ‘Red Front’, using the name Aragon. Both tracks were released later in 1984 on Slob Tapes under the Mummies and Madmen name as a C45 tape album, representing Slob 008. And that would probably have been that. Earlier this year she also had her debut album by her noise project Fallen Sun released by Fourth Dimension. Unlike Fallen Sun’s proclivity for melding uncompromising and often abrasive sounds together with occasional rhythmic undercurrents, Reverse Image’s approach to soundmaking is defined by measured crystalline shimmer, iridescent patterns formed on a Martian sunset, indiscernible clangs, gentle tones weaving in and out of each other, warm textural glaze, vast swathes of dilated hum, and undulating bridges that sometimes hint at the intensity of Yin’s other project. Ranging from compositions that furrow a moody ambience to others that could either sit easily alongside contemporary academic music or soundtrack a thoughtful (or thought-provoking) film, the nine pieces presented on this album shine a light onto an artist possessed of a deep understanding of her craft and the many wonderful avenues it can explore. Overtly, the material forming this album takes everything on the 2023 debut, The Silence That Does Not Exist, to an even greater height where promises are fulfilled yet continue to suggest many more" - written by Richard Johnson, Fourth Dimension Records.

Kleistwahr – Where The Word Is Never CD - the shrink wrap is torn.

If anybody has been paying attention (and in my opinion they bloody well should…), they might be aware that Gary Mundy of Ramleh and Breathless announced several years ago that he planned to do a solo CD every year for as long as he could. His solo guise as Kleistwahr started in the early 1980s as a more directly noise/post-industrial-inspired project that saw a few limited edition cassette releases appear on his much respected Broken Flag imprint. While these cassettes have now been reissued on both vinyl and CD, Kleistwahr has long been committed to not only Gary’s noted promise but also taking the ideas that began with the exploration of cut-ups, grizzled electronics, guitar savagery and so on to the furthest reaches of a ravaged psyche rendered in sonic form. Often connected to the early work through the use of uncompromising blistered and blistering white hot textures, Kleistwahr these days also deploys everything from groaning church organs, Gary’s distinctive vocals, occasional rhythms and swells of distortion to equally trademark guitars which seem as though they’ve been sucked through the outer rings of Saturn. The six cuts see less of the organ and more in the way of simplistic rhythm pulses, Gary’s vocals and even, on a couple of cuts at least, something that might be considered akin to a song structure if one greets The Dead C more or less the same way and has had enough decent wine. Like recent albums, however, 'Where the Word is Never' mostly delivers like it has been created through a rich blend of torment, lament and general despair before it frantically reaches for that small and beautiful white dot in the distance where all such thoughts can be cast asunder. Consisting of one piece of music (spanning around 40 minutes in total) that's broken into seven parts, it sees the core duo of Stuart Carter and Richard Johnson (both also in Splintered) working with contributions from Zsolt Sores, Hiroshimabend, Emma Lynch and Michal Wojciechowski to create a blanket of shifting sonic textures and pulses that are at once dynamic and unpredictable, Utilising electronics, field recordings, viola, voices, guitar and a variety of other sound sources, the sound here is rich in scope as it vacillates between the dramatic and more subdued.

Kleistwahr ‎– Winter / Music For Zeitgeist Fighters 2xCD

In 2021 US label Helen Scarsdale Agency released Kleistwahr's 'Winter' album on vinyl in an edition of 300 now more or less sold out, while 'Music for Zeitgeist Fighters' preceded it by a few years on Egypt's Nashazphone imprint also as an LP limited to 300 and equally hard to find these days.

Both albums are brought together on this limited edition 2CD release and feature, between them, five bonus tracks not previously made available elsewhere. Anybody paying enough attention in recent years will know that Fourth Dimension Records has long been dedicated to Gary Mundy of Ramleh's longstanding solo endeavour and is therefore happy to add these two wonderful albums to the fold. As with all of Kleistwahr's music, the very same strands of noise, tempered abrasiveness and serrated industrial hum that the project initially introduced in the early '80s can still be found guiding the sound but there's so much more to Kleistwahr than this. As with Ramleh, ravaged psychedelia and a tendency to infuse it with sensibilities found more often in art rock, prime period post-punk and even avant-garde music likewise play a significant role, rendering it a distinctive project driven by a singular vision that thankfully shows no signs of letting up.

Various – When Worlds Collide 2xlp compilation

his is a limited double-LP collection of artists who've been on either Fourth Dimension Records or Lumberton Trading Company, or are even indirectly associated. The title, based on the name of a childhood '50s sci-fi film favourite, not only reflects the bringing together of these two labels but also the fact that most of the artists they are concerned with tend to navigate a wide range of ideas and approaches. The 2LP also began as a reflection of the two labels coming together on 18 May 2024 at London's Cafe OTO for an event featuring Alternative TV, Splintered, Edward Ka-Spel and Bass Communion. This was the third such label event in London and sold out. The album was initially supposed to tie in with this event but due to growing into something bigger and more expansive (and expensive!) has had to wait a while.

The 2LP, beautifully packaged in a Puppy38 designed sleeve, includes the following artists mostly with exclusive tracks, as follows:

Side One

Alternative TV ‘Never Went to Art School’ 6:13
Nick Mott ‘Insect Totems, Parts 1 and 2’ 4:56
Bass Communion ‘The Ship Now Underwater’ 9:14

Side Two

Sion Orgon ‘King Karma’ 9:12
Theme ‘Blood Rivers’ 3:24
Final ‘Lost in Your Maze’ 5:07

Side Three

Edward Ka-Spel ‘The Human Cannonball’ 4:07
Ashtray Navigations ‘The Isn’t Meets the There’ 4:04
Band of Pain ‘The Hyperdeldric Afterglow’ 6:09

Side Four

Senestra ‘False Dawn’ 6:48
Kleistwahr ‘The Harrow and the Harshness’ 3:35
Splintered ‘The Horrors of Linden (Edit)’ 6:52
