This is a moment, a means to an end.

The usual long-distance nature of the band was rejected with disgust. They crammed together for one whole month in that scraping heat of Summer 01, harmonising diets and drinking nought but water. They left their womb-like domicile solely to toil for hours in a sun-shot sweatbox. Shyly, painfully, they orchestrated buzzes, scratches and clatters. They let the innards out, made them wallow, let the stuff which made them great just grow and sublimate. By the end they were sore but sharp. They had hacked out the evanescent outline of beauty. They laughed and slapped each other's backs, taking in the late afternoon sun in the dusty yard outside the room. Within hours, The Electric Press (Bob Tilton, Spy vs Spy) had arrived to record them. And so it was that on the cusp of Autumn, the songs were dashed down in minutes on (lucky) 7 track tape recorder.

Let's cut the crap. The resulting record represents their most accessible and satisfying work. From the fatal jerk of 'Take On The Break', thru the sweltering swoop of 'All A-tremble', by way of the rampant, rollicking 'Redemption Kicker', to the ragged shuffle of the title track. Battles are fought and won in the course of these tunes. The sweet swooning sweep of 'In Our Time' is the album's true centrepiece. Propped up by the warm groove and ice shard guitar stabs of 'Hesitation Rules', it flicks a brave shining V at all snide opponents before ushering the heavy curtain of darkness that falls by command of the final two songs, the cool closing twins - 'The Sum' with its minimalist workout and growling urgency, and 'Eavesdrop' with its crumpled warm waves of distortion, hopeful bass, chunky drums and haunting lazarus piano.

Drummer Ben Wright was asked to contribute to this tract. That much, at least, is beyond dispute.

The group members' backgrounds too, are reasonably well documented; one or more having previously been members of bands as diverse as Bob Tilton, Heresy, I am Spartacus, Reynolds, Schema and The X-Rays. It is with the expectations that some or all of these have created among sections of the audience for Wolves! that things start to become complicated.

Wolves! refuse to take themselves as seriously as some would like, yet take what they do very seriously indeed. They seek to subvert expectation. The noise they create may appear to be chaotic, but it is always, if not rigidly structured, then at least clearly defined. It may regularly be almost overpoweringly loud and abrasive, but it is never aggressive or confrontational. It may invoke unease, even tinnitus, but its aim is (with apologies for veering close to the pretentious, here) a kind of catharsis.

Although that isn't really the point. It just isn't that easy to say what is. Maybe it would be better to ask what the point of working in an office is. What the point of David Beckham is. High volume is often presented as an end in itself, when it's primary function is often simply to disguise an absence of substance, a veneer to protect the self righteous and the self important. With Wolves! (of Greece ) it masks a more subtle aesthetic. Expectation becomes self defeating. Those coming to the Wolves! expecting melody often leave believing they have found none; yet it is never far away - it's simply that it is never forced, never allowed to be the focal point, but is disguised by an equally deceptive semblance of chaos.

Structure remains fluid, yet absolute. Rather than adhere to some linear construct where B follows A in a pre-ordained manner, each member is allowed freedom to roam within parallel, individually defined boundaries, in a manner which, it could be argued, take the Wolves! closer to jazz than anything else, multiplying permutations.

This has always been central to the nature of the Wolves! (of Greece ), as has the relationship between the nature and the actual sound of what is created. So, rather than being an external process whereby the music is transmitted to an audience, the live mix (and the recorded sound) of the Wolves! is as integral a part as any other.

And if this all sounds like a deliberate attempt to find an alternative to the by now ritualised approach to writing and performing music, that's because it is, albeit in a far less coldly calculated, clearly delineated way than it might appear. But it isn't the only tired ritual being challenged by a Wolves! live performance, as the equally ritualistic relationship between performer and audience is another cosy situation being questioned. So, no perfunctory gaps - spaces where the audience is expected to applaud what they have just heard - are allowed; any silences being random consequences of circumstance, of breakdown or necessary reconstruction, to be filled - somehow - and not allowed to linger.

In fact, if there is one central ethos to which the Wolves! always strive to fulfil, it is not to allow anything to linger. So, songs (and, yes, they are songs) flash by in an instant or two, never labouring a point, and they have never yet played a live set that has lasted as long as 20 minutes. But they might tomorrow.

Because, if there is a central contradiction in what Wolves! (of Greece) are all about, it is that they risk becoming predictably unpredictable; that their attempts to radicalise will stagnate into just another collection of cliches and formulae - so all of this might already be untrue. But so far, they have succeeded in avoiding stagnation, and they have managed simultaneously to astonish, confuse, disgust and reduce audience members to tears whenever and wherever they've played.

And, with a performance broadcast by R1 during 2002's One Live In Nottingham, made John Peel's teeth hurt.

Designer Babies – Baghdad Boogie 7" record

Designer Babies started as the musical brainchild of Dusty Bible, following years of experimentation with bizarre and innovative fusions of blues-rock, electronics and the avant-garde. Their influences range from old blues and rock n roll to traditional Mauritian music and Japanese experimentalism. Nestled within the stylistic content of Designer Babies’ musical creations is the underlying recognition that it is no longer possible to create something truly new within a rock genre. Although effects lend variety, rock music has reached its physical limits in its instruments and techniques. The only option left in a society that thrives on nostalgia and recycling is therefore to fuse together styles and combinations of instrument and sounds in a way that celebrates the new yet pays homage to the past. This results in a music of contrasts, one which does not take itself too seriously to appreciate the humour and irony of what it is doing. The name reflects this providing recognition of the aural dangers of manipulation and splicing together different musical characteristics, in a grim parallel to genetic manipulation.

Designer Babies quickly gained a reputation across the thriving underground scene of Nottingham as a band at the cutting edge of creativity, having played with the likes of Oxbow, Melt Banana, The Apes and Wolves! The fact that this is Sailors' debut release shouldn't be allowed to suggest that, while by no means sad old muso farts, Sailors aren't exactly new kids on the block, either. There's history there, and some of that history is pretty ROCK!!

While obviously not something to be recommended, if you are going to suffer any degree of hearing impairment there are plenty of worse ways for it to happen than through regular exposure to The Melvins - which is exactly what happened to a pre-Sailors Nick Jones when he was King Buzzo's merchandise boy. And, while avoiding the crassly simplistic jibe ("Deaf singer? Yeah, they sound like it"), the damage done has exerted a profound, potentially unique, influence over the nature of the band's music. The threat of exacerbating hearing loss, combined with the geographical separation of its members (currently split between Leeds and Newcastle ), has led to Sailors' live shows becoming increasingly sporadic, lending each of them the air of an event to be cherished.

Maybe it's the impact of Nick's partial deafness, maybe because the infrequency of live shows has forced Sailors to find a way of working that is uniquely theirs, or maybe it's just down to the combination of personalities involved that mean time and again Sailors undermine any attempt to identify obvious or consistent reference points. One listen to the 4 tracks on the EP might bring to mind a succession of generally long forgotten names like Head of David or The Blue Aeroplanes, Fire Engines, Wire, or Screaming Blue Messiahs. Listen again and it might just as easily be The Birthday Party or Girls Against Boys. But, the thing is, apart from in the most fleeting, obscure or superficial of ways, they don't really sound like any of these groups. Ben Woods began by playing drums, but then some time in 2004 he disappeared. His departure heralded the arrival of a new drummer, James Smith, and a tenor saxophonist, Cyril Diels. Quietly, and with a great amount of respect, they also disappeared. A spate of disappearing band members followed, until two years and a few successful (notorious?) live performances later the group recorded a 10" EP named Cats!, recorded in the basement of an East London pub. Released with characteristic ill-timing in 2005, the band promptly went on indefinite hiatus as current drummer and principle songwriter John Wilson did as all Spin Spin The Dogs drummers do, and disappeared.

This hiatus was brought to an end in 2007 after John was discovered in South Australia. Realising there is more to life than sun, sea and warm burnt meat, he returned to the UK, tail between legs, and put the band back together. Impatient to return to live performance, highly regarded and never to be underestimated avant-garde noise musician Luke Younger was drafted in to play guitar for the band in late 2007. And thus a new golden age for the band was entered.

A band is often a collaborative venture, requiring compromises between individual members and their opposing visions. The music and performance is driven and directed by an invisible hand of name unknown and intention withheld. Now ten years old, they have spent the last decade building their reputation as one of the UK's most inventive and versatile instrumental acts.

Their contribution to this split release picks up from 2007's "A Hat" left off: developing an ever more direct and succinct approach to songwriting, the band channel their abundant energy in to tighter grooves and snappier riffs. Intricate rhythms are complimented by playful yet simple melodies, creating textures that are at once minimal and complex. In common with the most exciting instrumental bands of the last thirty years, Souvaris realise that wordless music need not be po-faced nor grandiose, and that fun can be clever too.

Sincabeza is Eric Camara, David Loquier, Philippe Rey and Antoine Vo Van Tao, four veterans of the Bordeaux rock scene. The band began playing together in 2002; initially a causal side-project in between other commitments (David drums for Laetitia Sadler's Monade), their natural perfectionism and committed work ethic has since seen them release two albums, play 200+ shows all over Europe, and place themselves firmly at the forefront of the blossoming French underground scene.

Those attempting to pinpoint Sincabeza's music usually situate it in some uncomfortable hinterland between post punk, disco and noisy pop. Rather than indulging in such futile fancies of nomenclature, the four piece simply concentrate on the joy of playing, allowing themselves to follow whatever deconstructed and intricate path they choose - songs full of awkward variations, elaborate arrangements, razor-sharp breaks, and - increasingly - surprisingly poppy melodies. The quality of musicianship is second to none, and yet the band's raw, physical energy creates the impression that these songs could lose control at any moment.

Sincabeza and Souvaris have toured extensively together over the last four years in the UK, Ireland and France, and this split release represents the consummation of a beautiful yet foolhardy tour van dream induced by sleep deprivation and cabin fever. More than ten years, six official and countless self-releases later, those six boys have become five 30-something men; the barn has become the practice spaces of Nottingham and the live venues of several successful UK and European tours; and the din has matured into something altogether more concentrated and accomplished.

Following on from their previous Gringo releases - the warmly received album A Hat (2007) and their split 12" Clown Jazz (2010) - Souvaris Souvaris sees the band continue to move away from the sheepish melodrama favoured by some instrumental artists, and have become ever more willing to explore different feelings, textures and ideas in their music. The influences audible on Souvaris Souvaris come from a collection of varied, sometimes opposed, personal tastes - krautrock; metal; electronica; afrobeat; disco; pop - and are wound together into a fluid, coherent whole. The album's theme is joyous musical self-exploration: by turns get-up-anddance funky; quietly reflective; and amp-shatteringly heavy.

Growling beats, sci-fi synths, underground basslines and menacing guitars make way for headnodding disco and glittering ambient noise. Every note on this album has been carefully thought out, with any extraneous fat trimmed and cast aside, resulting in a perfect balance of music and humanity, and it is this attention to detail which brings out every facet of Souvaris Souvaris.

From the subterranean bass rumble that kicks off the record to the euphoric dance grooves that finish up the album's smile-inducing closer, it's clear that this is an album without a beat of filler. TFT sees Andy and James deliver a similarly substantial amount of riffs, hooks and grooves via their chosen tools of baritone guitar (played through and switched between multiple guitar and bass amplifiers) and drums (stripped to the bare essentials i.e without toms) but with a much-expanded palette in terms of style, influence and mood.

TFT acts as a concept album of sorts. Confidently in control of their instruments and having honed the sound that has secured their reputation as one of the UK's most invigorating live acts, Tank are able to revisit and pull together influences that reflect both their broad taste and the fact that they have been playing together in one form or another since the age of eleven. Recorded in the year when these two friends reached thirty, TFT is a musical review of the journey they have embarked on for the last twenty years.

Opener and title track TFT, kicks the album off with a trademark tongue-in-cheek intro (this time a homage to Dire Straits) before cracking into the main riff of an AC/DC-ish banger. The hard rock and classic metal influences raise their head elsewhere in 'NWONWOBHM' and in epic climax-track 'Threads'. Melody plays a prominent role in 'Wonderful World Of' and 'Car On Fire' that both push the Tank sound as close as they'll come to sing-along territory. Perhaps most unexpected for ardent fans will be the ambient tracks 'Lomond' and acoustic closer 'End (Of Wonderful World)' whilst those that know the band and their roots will be less surprised to find a cover of early 90's DIY hardcore legends Voorhees, as well as a chance-generated thrasher 'D8' which nods aggressively to UKHC and British grindcore. Another homage is 'Acid Jam', a track that puts techno-pioneers Phuture's classic 'Acid Trax' through the Tank mill with heavily danceable results.

Rob Whiteley is back at the helm as engineer, having now worked with Andy and James for close to ten years. This sustained relationship has led him to develop a unique recording technique that captures the rawness and energy of Tank's performances (tracks are performed live in the studio with little or no overdubs) whilst creating layers of sound that translate the volume of a Tank gig as closely as possible. The result is an album of unprecedented depth and colour, for a 'noise-rock' duo at least, that moves across different spaces and atmospheres whilst retaining a consistency that represents the 'minimal/maximal' approach of the band well.

In keeping with the autobiographical nature of the album Andy and James have decided to release the initial vinyl pressing of this record through their resurrected label Obscene Baby Auction; putting the DIY ethics of the band into practice. A final important nod comes in the form of the packaging and liner notes that consciously echo Crass. Although it may be difficult for first-time listeners to make links between Tank and the anarcho-punk scene stylistically or aesthetically, an ethical and political affinity exists; Tank do their best to demonstrate that good music need not be the product of a careerist or cynically professional approach - it can just as likely come from friends having a good time together.
