They had gotten rave reviews from MMR and other underground punk tastemakers. They had released an excellent EP, Destroy Society, and a couple of splits. The problem was that they were completely out of step with the popular punk sound of the time, which was essentially the stuff on Epitaph and Fat Wreck Chords. The Pist were serious. The Pist were angry. The Pist had choruses you could shout along with, but nothing approaching harmonies. Almost every one of their songs was railing against something. There were no songs about love or teen angst. It was political without being pretentious. It was pure righteous rage in musical form.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\"Still Pist\" picked up right where \"We're The Pist\" left off from their first EP. \"Never Question\" was about trusting authority. \"Dead In Its Tracks\" was an anti-racism rant and had some of my favorite Pist lyrics. \"We'll fight them in the streets and we'll fight them in the courts\/We'll fight them with our fists but only as a last resort\". \"Alternative?\" mocked the popular music of the day. \"The Customer (is always right)\" chronicled the struggles of the low-wage worker. \"Slogans\" was a laundry list of the band's causes including animal rights, abortion rights, racial equality and freedom from religion. It also challenged the listener's commitment to social justice. The title track spoke of how violence could never silence people devoted to change. \"Small Town\" was really more critical of small minds.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOn side two, \"Textbook Salvation\" questioned the educational methods of the time. \"You are the system the red, white and blue\/The lies you are telling now start to show through\". \"Do What You're Told\" was a diatribe against conformity. \"New School\" spoke out about violence in the scene. \"We're sick of you tough guy stance\/We're sick of the way you dance\/We're sick of your baggy pants\". If you were there, you would have understood. \"Great American Sportsman\" mocked hunters as cowards. \"Song For You\" clocked in at a whopping ten seconds. Closing track \"Deal With It\" was a song of empowerment and encouraged the listener to take control of their life. DS 13's sound on this LP is similar to the last LP, the sound has progressed (regressed) into a more early 80's raw thrash sound. The guitars are less distorted and grindy sounding than the early releases. This gives the album a sort of raw intensity that allows the songwriting and energy to come out full force rather than behind a wall of distorted noise. I would compare DS 13 to early 80's HC bands like Minor Threat, Poison Idea and such, but I really feel they have a distinct hardcore sound all their own. When the opportunity arose to work with both of them at once I was eager to make it happen. From Ashes Rise plays dark, slightly metallic hardcore that is not unlike early His Hero Is Gone mixed with Scandinavian hardcore like Skitystem and 80's UK crust like Antisect. Drawing on those influences From Ashes Rise has moved this sound into it's own territory so to simply label it \"Tennessee style\" hardcore would be oversimplifying their sonic progression. From Ashes Rise recorded at Polymorph in the Bay Area and I can safely say this was the most expensive recording ever released on Havoc, but the Production is intense and flawless. From Ashes Rise previously released a 7\" and 2 LPs on Partners in Crime and Feral Ward. They followed up the split with the Nightmares LP on Jade Tree\/Havoc.  Victims from Sweden play aggressive fast Scandinavian hardcore not unlike early Skitsystem or Wolfbrigade. You can hear the influence of early Swedish hardcore like Anti-Cimex, Shitlickers and Crude SS mixed with the heavier sounds of 90's crust core, but there is also some influence from the early 80's US hardcore sound. Tear It Up toured the US and Europe constantly, and when not on tour still played as many as 4 shows a week anywhere within a days drive of their native New Jersey. Tear It Up survived several line up changes most notably Paul went on to form Cut the Shit and John was drafted from Down in Flames. Tear It Up broke up shortly before this record was released. Therefore, consider this swan song to be the parting shot from a band captured at their peak. Let it be known that Tear It Up went out at the top and never put out a weak record or put or a lame half hearted show.  Matt went on to the Rites. Paul went on to Cut the Shit and was also In Sleeper Cell. As it happened he had some sort of tumor on his throat and would have to have surgery and years of therapy to sing again. During the recording sessions Micke's voice went out and Poffen from Totalitar was called in for some guest vocals, his first appearance outside Totalitar. As a result of the band breaking up and Micke losing his voice, the tour was cancelled but Wolfbrigade agreed to fly in for just two shows, Thrash Fest 5 and a show in Chicago with From Ashes Rise. Micke's voice held out for two stellar shows. The cover art on this 12\" was done by Marald (formerly known as Shitface) who drew the cover to our first release back in 1991! Severed Head of State have been going for ten years now, but are a band with no geographic center and with all members playing in other bands. Guitarist Todd Burdette (Tragdy, His Hero Is Gone, Warcry) delivers some really searing guitar riffs on this LP and the guitar tone is perfect for the style, biting and corrosive like battery acid. Jack Control (World Burns to Death) has always impressed me with his raw and angry vocals and well thought out lyrics. A lot of bands write about the horror of war and man's inhumanity to man just because it's what fits the music. When I read Jack's lyrics I see that he's looking beyond the black and white pictures of war victims in the history books. The atrocities are not the result of one criminal act, but of the recurring process of unrestrained power and authority run amok. The bleak lryics and their focus on oppression and atrocity are a searing reminder that there is much to be done and things will probably get worse before they get any better. I've always though bassist Kelly Halliburton (Masskontroll, Defiance, Clusterbombunit, Resist) had some of the best style in hardcore dropping in some of his crucial Discharoge style \"walking\" bass fills. Havoc Records started in the early 90's as a vehicle to expose the new bands that were emerging from the long coma hardcore punk had fallen into during the late 80's. At that time the scene was dominated by poppy bands, third tier metal, chugga chugga white hat mosh, and emo. A small group of die hards who couldn't let the 80's punk revolution go started new bands and hit the road to small and often indifferent crowds. I was in one of these bands (Destroy) and met the Pist on tour in 1993, they were heading east and we were heading west. I quickly befriended them and was happy to book them every time they played Minneapolis and distribute all their releases. That tour in 1993 led to the first batch of releases on Havoc, Aus Rotten, Civil Disobedience, Bristle, Distraught and Masskontroll were all bands we played with or befriended on that tour. Now we can add the Pist to that roster as their long out of print material finally sees the light of day.  Ideas are Bulletproof is the quintessential Pist release if you've never heard the Pist, this is the place to start. If you remember these guys and were up front at the shows like me you'll remember all these songs Still Pist, New School, Textbook Salvation, the Customer Is Always Right etc. The Pist combined hard driving punk in the Blitz tradition with gut level lyrics that were simple and to the point, but very well thought out. In fact, I still think the Pist had some of the very best lyrics EVER. The guitar has a bit of the metallic crunch that would permeate hardcore in the future, but still remains grounded in punk. Broken Bones mixed the raw drive of early hardcore punk with the power of metal to move into the forefront of the then burgeoning Crossover scene. This LP compiles the bands best tracks from their 1980's singles. It's the vinyl version of a CD which has been out for several years. Due to time constraints, some of the tracks from CD were omitted. However, what you get is some the very best of this bands material, their first two 7\"s, and the seminal 12\" eps. This band has been one of my favorites since the 80's. In fact, my second tattoo was the artwork off a Broken Bones LP.
