It's fitting that Milemarker should join the ranks of Chicago's art rock scene, for Frigid Forms Sell, first released on Lovitt in 1999, marked the band's move from East Coast emotional hardcore to an angular, politicized, sexy cold wave rock. In 2002, following the band's successful Anesthetic, Jade Tree did the world a favor by re-releasing the genre-defying Frigid Forms Sell. From the eerie, sci-fi electronic dance that introduces the album as "Frigid Forms Sell You Warmth" to the most radical tracks, the couplet "Sex Jam One: Sexual Machinery" and "Sex Jam Two: Insect Incest," the album cross-pollinates hardcore punk with keyboard dance grooves. Right on cue, the pounding opener “Conditional Love,” with its combination of computer-generated robotic voices and chanted human ones, melds industrial dance, krautrock, and post-punk (imagine a Front 242, Kraftwerk, and Killing Joke fusion), while the propulsive, Sisters of Mercy-like “Untamed Ocean” straddles goth, prog-rock, and doom metal. And the sinister, stormy “The Dreamer,” with keyboards that lash like laser beams, guitars that clamor like crashing ocean waves, drums that lurch like lumbering machinery, and a menacing mix of whispered and wailed singing, manages to synthesize all of the above-mentioned genres. Elsewhere, the sweeping “Luxuria” is dynamic dreampop, the shuffling “Recognition” is groovy chillwave, and the spastic “Supercomputer” is wiry electro-funk. Being fully instrumental shouldn’t mean you have nothing to say, and yet conceptually languid, lackluster instrumental albums are commonplace. It can be argued that part of the charm of both writing and listening to instrumental music is the nebulousness of the underlying theme. Instrumental bands are unburdened by half-hearted prose, centre-of-attention vocals or the risk of losing would-be fans due to an inscrutable distaste for the singer’s tone or style. Being wordless can perversely open music up to being able to communicate anything, but taking advantage of this freedom is a feat that few bands manage.

With this in mind, it is extremely gratifying to be able to talk about a band that has so consistently delivered instrumental music that communicates something profound, whilst avoiding formulaic post-rock crescendos or the veritable twinkles of jazzy math rock. Whilst The Mercury Program are bedfellows of post-rock, their groove-led intricacy and thoughtful use of effects has allowed them to occupy a space in the instrumental music world that breaks the spell of the subgenre’s connotations. Whilst ‘long, reverby and soundscaped’ wouldn’t be an uncharitable description of earlier work, their most acclaimed music contains shorter, sharper riffs and unapologetically repetitive melodies, all the while maintaining rhythmic interest and charming the ear with a twinkle of vibraphone.

This new EP New Myths comprises of 6 tracks and breaks the second of the band’s two 7 year hiatuses. The Washington D.C.-based trio, whose early chaotic recordings spawned the term "spazzcore," have upped the musical and topical ante for their final album, and the result is a complex record that takes major steps forward and still never lets up on the frantic energy that helped make a name for them. "Red Bull of Juarez" and "The Awesome Machine" find the band still leading the way with jerky instrumentation and vocalist Shelby Cinca's explosive screams, but And We Washed Our Weapons in the Sea takes off in a number of other directions as well, and while unexpected, the ideas prove to be well backed up. Tracks like "The Earth Isn't Humming" and the deeply personal "6/99" (a reference to the passing of two individuals very close to the band) feature amazingly clear vocals and subdued but still evocative music. Instrumentals like the slowly creeping "Belgian Congo" or the experimental programming piece "Hull Crush Depth" prove that the can pull off a number of styles in an equally convincing manner. Powerfully affecting and surprisingly groundbreaking for such a pigeonholed act, And We Washed Our Weapons in the Sea is a perfect example of solid record that is unaffected by the constraints of any ridiculously implied genres. In 1994 and 1995 when these tracks were recorded (as demos, for a 7" on Nervous Wreck Kids, one with Rye Coalition, a Whirled Records compilation, and a split with Shotmaker), Drew Ringo, Dave Nesmith, Bob Baynor, and Tom Richards were students at James Madison University. Though not widely known beyond Virginia, the experimental hardcore music produced by this inconspicuous foursome was far ahead of its time. Picking up where Slint left off, these contemporaries of Hoover and June of 44 predated Mogwai with unhinged, intricately composed songs that are clean and mellow one moment, brash, raw, and jagged the next. All of the tracks on Discography seem simultaneously grounded in the innovation of mid-'90s post-punk and absolutely timeless. From the meandering, Slint-like repetition of "New Jello," with its characteristic epic explosion halfway through the song, to the on-again-off-again clatter of "Sifelaver," the distorted, psychedelic rant of "Coughfin'," and the Jawbox riffs and ripped-apart vocals of "Bluestone," Discography is vital, thrilling, and risky. In 2012, two of the founding members of the seminal punk trio Bats & Mice stepped into the studio to start work on their follow-up to 2010's Back In Bat EP. Then, between babies and careers, life happened, and the project went dark for almost a decade. Bats & Mice is a band that has quietly crept through the music world. Three members of Sleepytime Trio originally formed the band: Jonathan Fuller (Engine Down, Denali), Dave NeSmith (Rah Bras, Committees) and Ben Davis (MileMarker, Committees). They began writing songs together in a new style that pursued their hardcore roots coupled with a more dark and winding sense of melody. However, the music still maintained the energy and drive of their previous efforts. This line-up produced Bats & Mice's first work, a self-titled EP released on Lovitt Records in the fall of 2000, to critical acclaim. Friends Daron Hollowel and Ash Bruce from the band 400 Years joined for a stint in which 'Bats' wrote and released the full-length album entitled, Believe It Mammals, on Lovitt in the spring of 2002. That line-up toured to support the LP across the US, playing with Fugazi, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, 90 Day Men, Denali, and Gregor Samsa. In 2004, Luke Herbst joined the band on drums, and the band toured Europe in support of a new EP titled A Person Carrying a Handmade Paper Bag is Considered as a Royal Person. Jonathan Fuller rejoined the group and helped write and record the Back In Bat EP, released in 2010. Soon after, Mark Oates (from Wailin' Storms) took over the drums for Jonathan and helped write new songs as the band headed into the studio to record the basic tracks for an LP in 2012. Bats & Mice then shelved the material as life, marriages, children, and Covid ate away the years. In early 2023, the band reconvened in Chapel Hill's Warrior Sound to rework the original tracking and finish a ten-song full-length record. KUKL was populated by survivors of the post-punk scene in Iceland in the early '80s, which is well documented in the film Rock in Reykjavik from 1982. The band was released by the Crass collective in London and featured members, apart from Birgir and Sigtryggur, like Guðlaugur Óttarsson, Einar Melax, Björk and Einar Örn, some of whom would become better known later in outfits like the Sugarcubes and their respective solo work and other collaborations. Sigtryggur has a long career in music, having worked with among others, Emiliana Torrini, Howie B, Les Negresses Vertes, Tomas R. Einarsson, Petur Ben, KK, Kaktus Einarsson, and many others. Maximillian Colby concluded before its time with the sad and sudden death of bassist Bob Baynor. But this long-awaited collection is an indispensable record and a true tribute to an influential musical force." - Charles Spano
