It was recorded with Brooks Meeks from The Close at his new studio in the West End warehouses, and were basically his guinea pigs so he could get the studio set up and work out all the bugs. We had complete freedom to take as long as we wanted getting the recording perfect, and in the process we overanalyzed and took out all of the sharp edges that make recordings exciting and interesting (at least in my opinion). Our takes are as perfect as they could have been given our musical ability at the time, and we spent endless hours mixing, remixing and remixing everything, and the album suffered from this obsessive approach. It was also the most "low-fi" studio we had recorded in, as it was essentially Brooks' home studio, but the recording was free so how can you complain? I still love the album, as I love all our albums, but I think the end result would have been better had we taken an approach like we did for the next album, No Funeral. Once again, the name Set Yourself On Fire has no meaning, but was just a funny phrase we liked when thinking of names. Also, we had so many problems with figuring out how to sequence the songs for this album, so in the end we just put them in the order they were written by the band. So if you listen to the album, you can hear the band make their way through a year's worth of writing songs, including our cover of The Logical Song as an extra treat. Reviewers of the album thought the cover song was essentially meaningless, as we did not change the arrangement or tone of the song, but I have been a fan of the Breakfast in America album for years, and Magnolia had been released the year before, which really sealed the deal for us as a cover song. And we like the song itself as it is, so why make some sort of lame pop punk version or try to change what we like about it?

Here is the artwork for the album, which had a cover done by the amazing Rich Jacobs, who is a friend of Bob and has done album covers for The Black Heart Procession, Three Mile Pilot, etc. Bob did the inside drawings, such as the duck on fire and the fire extinguisher on fire, still makes me laugh." - James Joyce

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2606/0952/files/img491_e48006aa-4fe9-422c-a175-ccd34e0a5a5f.jpg?v=1751659202
chocolate-kiss-no-funeral-cd
Chocolate Kiss - No Funeral CD

Chocolate Kiss - No Funeral CD

"And so it ends. The final release from Chocolate Kiss, a band who kicked out a couple of very fine CD's over their lifetime (my favourite before the release of this being Les Booms Booms - this album trumps it). At least they go out on a high note. "No Funeral" (an apt title) sees them romp through 8 tracks of highly melodic emo / indie rock, replete with ex-members of some mid 90's emo band (go check their other reviews for info, and I must stop using brackets in this review). The opening tune "We're All Monsters" comes stomping out of the gate with strong instrumentation and fantastic vocals from Matt Mauldin, the rhythm section is tight and holds things together whilst the guitar drives the song onwards. Very catchy and enjoyable. Which sets the scene for the whole album that lasts around half an hour or so, tunes which are enjoyably fun sounding, stuffed with infectious melodies and those vocals which just hit me in precisely the right spot, helping make the band stand out. Each tune has it's own special moments, "Hissing, Pissing and Buzzing" for example has a gorgeous twinkly moment before blistering back into it's ace repetitious finale. So tasty. Whilst "Both Ways" could well have been a track that somehow didn't make it onto some old LP called "Deja Grateful", peculiar that. Comprised of three very talented musicians, they played a version of instrumental math/post rock that managed to be both angular and melodic. (Haven't heard of them? It's more based on my first reaction upon playing City Under Siege, which is Plexorjet's first full length release. Although the first song, Foot Bag, struck me as a instrumental version of something by Toenut (yet another defunct Atlanta band), the first 30 seconds of the next song, Austin City Limits, began with such a staccato guitar rift that I couldn't help but be reminded of The Purkinje Shift. And therefore, when Plexorjet's understated vocals broke into the mix, I was disappointed. Rationally, I know I shouldn't be, and yet…my mind had already drawn the comparison. Similarly, during remaining 8 songs, I would be totally engrossed in the instrumental interplay, and then the vocals would come in and I would be stunned again.

Truth be told, the vocals actually work in the context of Plexorjet's work. When their songs are building to a peak, the vocals tend to act as a cathartic release. That's not to say that they start screaming or wailing, but rather that the individual vocal lines (usually added in subdued melodic tenor) break apart the tension of the music. Furthermore, most of the lyrics are just quick snippets that overlay only part of the songs - they don't pervade the atmosphere in the way most people would expect. It's a pretty cool to use the vocals as an accent, and in the context of City Under Siege, I like it, as long as I don't let my preconceived notions interfere.

In the end, every time I play this album, I wonder why I don't listen to it more. I suppose there is a certain sameness of form in some of the songs. And to me, some of their influences (such as Toenut, or even Tortoise) are a little too front and center. But I do enjoy City Under Siege, even if my reasons aren't exactly clear in my own mind. Is it that I like the music so much? Or is it rather that it recalls the sound of a band that's no longer together? I think it's the former, but I have to confess I'm not entirely sure. I'm all for pop, I'm all for pretty music, and I'm all for lovely song structures. But Jet By Day isn't really about those things. Jet By Day, an Atlanta area band, is about intensity and urgency that's as evident on their quieter moments as their loudest. That's quite a feat, frankly, and this band shows their maturity (they've been playing together for over five years) in pulling it off. Bob Weston brings out every bit of this band's talent on their stellar debut full-length. The guitars rip away with emphatic riffs that sound like they're taken from your favorite hardcore band and slowed down. The vocals are shouted and sung, mostly the former, with a kind of raw passion, and the rhythm chugs away with a stellar intricacy. What really sets this band apart is the fact that they never beat you over the head with power or noise, more content to focus on tight riffs, wild vocals, and an urgency pounded out of their instruments at a pace that feels like it should erupt into mayhem but never does over the course of five or six minutes." - delusions of adequacy

The Close / Red Level Eleven split 7"

Two local Atlanta bands team up for the first in a series of split 7”s on moodswing records. Pedal steel, cello, and viola add rich, velvety color to Jefrey Siler's Southern gothic stories; there are acoustic guitars too, and vibes, and twinges of electric piano and electric guitar. In the louder moments -- "Bring Your Sore Throat," "Raising," or "Familiar" -- Clemente can suggest the yearn and clatter of Will Johnson and Centro-Matic; other times, it's American Music Club's literate, highly evocative sound that comes to mind. Like these stylistic touchstones, Clemente's songs are good at establishing a tangible mood. In "Gradually," Jeff Moore's pedal steel isn't a device to say "Ladies and gentlemen, alt.country." No, it swells with real gravity, shimmering in the corners of the rooms and lives Siler is singing about, aching along with his cracking voice as the relationship seems to dissolve. "Let Go of My Hand" is a nice lament driven by the drums of Buffy Davis and Siler's resigned statement, "Maybe you weren't meant to live in this city"; "Hallway Stay Quiet" plays a fiddle off the pedal steel, and sways in refracted stillness like closing time at the VFW hall. Teeth Measure the Need's material can blend into a long Americana ramble. But it's a strong record for that same reason, since Siler's songs have such a pungent, descriptive sense of place. With a deep and varied instrumental lineup, Clemente's sound is warmly organic, and as tactile as a novel." - Johnny Loftus

Indigo Boys ‎– Pan-Sexual Party Song 7"

"This is the space where labels talk the hype. Although the idea behind the former vocalist and guitar player for long-defunct Atlanta indie rockers the Close explains that the project was initially conceived as a country/songwriter-esque project, it has come a long way over the last couple of years. The A-side on the 7-inch is a duet with Tom Cheshire of All Night Drug Prowling Wolves for a cover of Nick Cave and Robyn Hitchcock's "Weeping Song." Here their rendition does justice to the original's air of darkness while draping a Southern twang over the its subtle nuances. On the b-side "The Deuce of Clubs" is a like-minded atmospheric brood where Meeks gives his nod to the lowest card in the deck, which kind of says it all. I got to know Spam the guitarist somewhat, as he later practised a few times with the Go-Steadys, but loved to play little guitar licks and noodles so much over our music, it just didn't work out. Greg the drummer was (and probably still is) the owner of Dagwood's Pizza on the corner of Holcomb Bridge Road and Spalding Drive in Norcross. I would have dinner there sometimes with my Mom and know that the dude behind the counter making pizzas was the drummer of an incredible band. Greg the singer was a little older than us, or at least he seemed to be at the time. He owned a house in the area of Dagwood's and also owned several guns. He was that guy you knew in your teenage years. Lastly John Paul the bassplayer was the first guy I knew who could properly grow a beard, and had this amazingly smooth, flowing bass style for hardcore music. Granted, singer and guitarist Dan Dixon occasionally channels the spirit of Thom Yorke, at least a little bit, and the drums are big, loud, and busy. But everyone in this trio is big, loud, and busy, and if the end result harks back to any great band of a couple of decades ago it's Mission of Burma more than Led Zep. Big Nothing was originally issued on the Moodswing label in 2001, but when Dropsonic signed with 54 40 or Fight the band decided to reissue both Big Nothing and its predecessor, Belle, for the new label. Equal parts math rock, vintage AOR, grungy metal, and punk anarchy, Big Nothing is an exhilarating and cathartic mess of a record that surprises with its staying power. Not everything is wonderful all the way through, but keep your focus all the way to the end and you'll be rewarded with such gems as the long and surprisingly complex "Inside Out" and the slow and corrosively pretty "Sleepwalking." You'll have to work just a bit to get there, but you'll be glad you did." - Rick Anderson

Hell Mach Four s/t cassette - Four song EP

Features an unreleased song, Aeita, and three tracks from their "Time Elapse Of Human Transformation And Sound Transition" 12".

"This four piece (hence the Four portion of their moniker) channeled that abrasive racket Richmond was honing to finely pointed blade round about that time.
