The lyrical content presented herein should come as no surprise given that principal songwriter, Rob Haworth, has been a voice of resistance for decades, both through his music (Farside, State of the Nation) and through his work as an author and academic (Anarchist Pedagogies, Out of the Ruins: The Emergence of Radical Informal Learning Spaces, etc.). The musical direction, however, may come as a bit of a surprise to fans of Haworth’s previous hardcore/post-hardcore bands, since it eschews volume and distortion in favor of the beautiful vocal layering of Bob Mould, subtle hints of Guided by Voices, and the piano/keys of contemporary Afghan Whigs.

Conceptually, the album explores the feeling of continuously being in broken relationships, from the opening song “Anything” to the last song “Missing You,” but it’s not meant in an inter-personal sense. Yes, it’s a breakup record, but its about breaking up “with the ill social, political and economic structures we live under,” and “constructing new subjectivities,” according to Haworth. The only point of deviation from the breakup theme is the sui generis rendition of Bad Religion’s, “We’re Only Gonna Die,” but somehow it still fits perfectly along the other songs on the album.

In essence, Second Letter came to life in 2014, when Haworth eagerly began creating music again, after nearly a fifteen-year hiatus from songwriting. After woodshedding in his basement for a few months, Haworth played a few demos for bassist Jim Kimball (J. Majesty, Retisonic), who enjoyed them so much he jumped onboard the Second Letter train immediately. A short while later, Haworth connected with Pete Moffett (Government Issue, Burning Airlines, Wool), who also took a great shine to Haworth’s new tunes, and was ready to up the ante of Haworth’s somewhat rudimentary drum programming. The next piece of the Second Letter puzzle to be locked in was keyboardist Carin Smith, who was readily able to recreate and elaborate on the keyboard and synth textures found on the demos. The role of second guitarist was perhaps the hardest to fill, but mainly due to scheduling and geography. After working with guitarist Matt Kane and doing a bit of studio work with Fred Mascherino (Taking Back Sunday, The Color Fred), Second Letter solidified its line-up with the perfect sonic creativity and talent of Chris Woodhead. Shortly after securing their permanent line-up, and playing their first few shows, bassist Kimball had to leave the east coast and the band behind, but he was soon replaced by John “Scoops” Hutchins (The Deadmen).

In the midst of finalizing the line-up, Mike Fanuele (Dashboard Confessional, the Deadmen, Further Seems Forever, and Breaking Pangea) came onboard to help the band take their early demos to a whole new level and was ultimately tasked with producing and mixing the final album. Most of the album tracking and re-tracking happened at Fanuele’s Lavabed Recording in Maryland, but a few sessions occurred at Noisy Little Critter in Pennsylvania with Mike Bardzik.

Once the album was complete, a copy was sent to John Yates, who is well known for creating iconic album covers for the Dead Kennedys, Jawbreaker, the Alkaline Trio, amongst others, and he agreed to work on the album. Haworth and Yates then worked together to build the album’s cover art and various other aesthetic pieces for merchandise, etc.

With ‘Cicatrix’s’ eminent release, the band is playing a handful of pre-release shows along the east coast, with more post-release dates to be announced shortly. Early singles “Dead Emblems” and “Ruins” have already gotten a lot of love from fans of the members previous projects, and they’ve torn up non-commercial and college radio airwaves on both coasts since their release.

Android Empire ‎– Monument 2 x lp

Founded in 2004 by the former SHEPHERD members Oliver Bojoski (guitar) and Tobias Engl (drums), ANDROID EMPIRE’s musical heritage lies in the vibrant doom and stoner scene of the early 2000s. Left in limbo, the remaining band members continued rehearsing, but the search for someone to fill the gap eventually covered a period of 18 months. Meanwhile, guitarist Martin Fischer also joined Berlin’s instrumental stoner rock veterans ROTOR.

Enter James Schmidt (JUD, THE FULLBLISS). A long-time friend of the band and an accomplished drummer, the native Londoner joined ANDROID EMPIRE in spring 2015 and immediately turned out to be the right one for the job. The same youngsters that were influenced by the band when they started in 2004, urged them to return to the stage ten years later as guests of honour of the Festival Hoteler 2014, an event that until this year, took place in Vic. For the occasion, Raul (Tokyo Sex Destruction/Lost Tapes), Piti (Standstill /Catarata) and Joel (Dies Irae), recruited the great Eric Fuentes (The Unfinished Sympathy) to take Rubén Martínez’s place as guitar. You can imagine the result once these four rock artisans came together! After that concert (that gave the finishing touch to an important life cycle), everything let loose: more concerts, more rehearsals and a growing appetite for new songs that were carefully cooked the following summer at a masia in Anoia. The same songs then travelled around infinity of recording studios, until the triki trake
punk style that was so characteristic in their first three albums – Giving Everything (2004), No Time For Jokes (2005) and Bound For the Shine (2007)-, was turned in to something different; or maybe it was the same, but better, more flavourful.

They went from lo-fi to hi-fi for Fool The Wise (2016), a hegemonic piece that is reinforced thanks to the complicity between drums and base. The rhythmic base builds a devilled maelstrom, giving space for the vocals and guitar, both mutable and melodic, to dance, exchange roles and share the limelight. And the backing vocals! Just wait until you hear them live. For the lyrics, a few biblical signs are found in the songs (ex: “Resurrection”, “Psalm 69” or “Sacred Meal”), with the intention, as the title suggests, of fooling the great wise one, but mostly just to have a laugh at everything and everyone, like they have always done. This time, with their fine –and sometimes brute- sense of humour, they haven’t woven a giant joke, but a giant trap, for all of those that believe art is serious and dark. The studio turned out to be a great place for BARRELS’s first strike, and Role turned out to be the perfect person to guide the recording of the album. When my brother passed away in 2011, life changed dramatically for me and my family.” At some point, it became clear that the entire album was going to be about that life-changing experience and its profound consequences. That’s why it was dedicated to the deceased. “I knew right from the beginning that coping with this very personal issue by sharing it with everyone listening to the album might put me on thin ice. Nonetheless, it felt right and important to me, and it still feels very relieving.”

There is no doubt that “Invisible” is a tough nut: An album with rough edges, but a soft inside. Thankfully, the Atlanta-via-Athens quartet's thawing post-shoegazer/dream pop blend has absolutely nothing to do with Interpol and the like, thus the album title says it all. Singer/songwriter Jordan Jeffares' droning vocals and David Payne's reverb-driven guitars surround these 12 nervy melodies for a lush atmosphere of sonic hysteria. So what if it slightly echoes the classic sounds of '80s post-punk in the process? Producer/engineer Erik Wofford adds polish to Snowden's slippery moods so songs such as the moaning twitch of "Like Bullets" and the neurotic punctuality of "Counterfeit Rules" never lose their momentum. Slower cuts such as "My Murmuring Darling" and "Innocent Heathen" filter through a melancholic ebb and flow of Chandler Rentz's faint percussion and Corinne Lee's icy bass work. The original seven songs written by the band were recorded at the same session in the Summer of 1995 by Issa "Let's Take A Break" Diao at Sleepless Nights Studio, which produced these first three singles and one unreleased song. The design was also used for a t-shirt around the same time, one of only two hal al Shedad t-shirt designs ever produced. The single was initially released by three guys named James, Patrick and Turtle from Knoxville under the label name Auto-Stop Records, but kept in print by Stickfigure Records after the initial pressing. "Riding with Angels" from this single was a fan favorite at the time, but was dropped soon after the music for the self-titled album was written. "Superego" was the last of the original seven songs written, which includes some quiet parts foreshadowing the wider dynamic range of later hal songs such as "The Art of Mapmaking", etc.

"Reissued" in March of 2007 on Stickfigure.

Max And Laura Braun ‎– Telltale lp

Alt folk singer songwriter duo Max & Laura Braun are siblings. Born in Germany, they started making music together in their early teenage years. But life has since separated them. While Max stayed in Germany, Laura up and left in the late 90s to make London her home. During the following years they only occasionally managed to play and sing together. Finally however, in the rainy late summer of 2008 this changed. Max & Laura spent a few days in one of their favourite places, a little village in Dorset, England, writing their first new songs again after almost ten years. The songs that emerged from this trip, called the Dorset Songs were recorded shortly afterwards as a demo and marked the beginning of Max & Laura Braun as a solid musical project. Since then Max and Laura have written more and more songs, have acquired a band and started gigging in Germany as well as in the UK. Their music has grown, darker, fuller and more diverse in it s influences since those simple Dorset Songs . Percussive drumming, melodic bass lines and shimmering pedal steel sounds ad facets beyond folk to Max and Laura s guitar playing and vocals that sit together so smoothly like perhaps only those of a brother and sister can. In late 2011 Max & Laura recorded their first full length Album Telltale with their band in the little village of Plüderhausen near their home town of Stuttgart in Germany. The band had its genesis as a scrappy young hardcore band and ended up as an epic and complex instrumental powerhouse. I have seen other reviews for the band that bring up their debt owed to the likes of Ornette Coleman, Don Caballero, and Captain Beefheart. While all of these influences are undeniable, I think it is more important to point out that Blame Game have carved a very unique sound out of the fusion of their heroes more so than just merely imitating them. The 12" contains three new tracks from the band which show them charting yet another course in their career. US-Indie, that is. It fits them better than the Brit sound. vs.ROME offer melodies reminding of Chokebore or Girls vs. Boys. They also offer noise, and the obvious amount of heaviness present is being imposed on them by their personal musical influences: Hardcore, Dischord, even Metal. There are also hooks and melodies to remember, and where those may come from after such influences, know one knows. Still, almost every song has them. vs.ROMEs music comes to life between Cologne and the Ruhr Area, which fits: cleverness – and then lots of dirt shoveled on top. What’s interesting about this band is not some musical genre they might fit in, it is the influence each of the members brings along, and the combination of those. When everyone in the band knows what he wants, he had enough time to figure out what he certainly does not want. With vs.ROME, it’s exactly like that. Using harsh electronic beats and bleets, ringing synthetic noise-tones, turntable abuse, and manipulated tapes as weapons, Monotract attack with agile precision and impressive ferocity. The results are a devastating mindfuck. Devoted as I may be when I drop the needle, I've only managed to listen to it in its entirety in one sitting a couple of times out of maybe ten attempts. It hurts my head and I think it's giving me an irregular heartbeat. It's like taking a beating. To follow this simile a bit further: much as two fighters earn each other's respect over the course of a grueling bout, Pagú has earned mine. - Edward McElvain

(All Music Guide) Describe Monotract in one word: mad. This trio from Miami can and will use any instrument or musical form to deconstruct, subvert and attack your music beliefs. Guitars, cheap synthesizers, distorted voice, toys, phone messages and computer processing all become part of an electronica freak circus where humor supports the big top. Pagu, released as an LP by Public Eyesore, throws 13 dizzying tracks at the listener in under 40 minutes. We are bounced and thrown from one tune to another in this no-man¹s-land somewhere between experimental electronica, (naive techno which has lost all its naivete) and noise. It is one hell of a ride and most listeners will give up trying to make sense of it all. That¹s the point. Don¹t fight it, accept the fact that anything goes and Pagu turns into a fun-filled adventure into the confines of underground music. 'Con la Cabeza en la Escuela' opens side one with a taste of stupid techno. This side¹s highlight is the two-part 'California,' a noise assault that hides much more craftsmanship than what you¹d expect. The flip side¹s standout is 'Ellen¹s Song,' which is basically a phone message turned into a dyslexic dance floor anthem. 'Hot Sine' arches back to vintage Industrial days. The last two cuts push the aural assault a few notches up, bordering on digital Merzbow in 'Nestron.' Surprisingly, there is a lot of this kind of music out there, but Monotract¹s possesses that level of excitement and obvious involvement that separate the professionals from the amateurs. - Francois Couture

Personkrets 3:1 ‎– The Glorious Dead LP - the cover has very light wear from shipping to Stickfigure

This is the anticipated follow up to the Life is Beautiful 10" (HALVEP016, December 2004) with ten tracks of a raging mix of crustcore and classic Swedish råpunk. At the time, both Garrett Klahn (Texas Is The Reason) and Drew Thomas (Into Another) had parted with their respective bands to find something more. Through mutual friends in the business and NYC scene, Garrett and Drew were able to connect and create that something more with local guitarist and songwriter Kevin McGinnis. Within a few months, the band would independently release an EP, creating a buzz through the town and the industry. This buzz led to a demo deal at Capitol Records. Although this move would prove to not work out, as fate would have it, the New Rising Sons were offered a multi-album contract with Virgin Records.

Ted Niceley (Fugazi, Girls Against Boys, Shudder To Think, Jawbox, Standford Prison Experiment) was brought in to produce, while Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Faith No More, Jeff Buckley, Sonic Youth, Rage Against The Machine, Foo Foghters, Biffy Clyro), was slated to mix. Up and coming engineer, Carl Glanville (U2, Counting Crows, Bruce Springsteen, Shudder To Think) was hired as Ted’s right hand man. Scotty Beschta (The Promise Ring) was recruited to fill the bass role, but due to unforeseen circumstances, never ended up on the final recordings.

The band chose the idyllic setting of the famed Bearsville Studios (Bob Dylan, The Band) to begin production and record the main tracks for their debut full length. Thankfully, with the help of Arctic Rodeo, the record is being released in full for the first time, as a limited edition 20th anniversary vinyl and re-mastered by the Grammy award-winning mastering engineer Alan Douches (Sufjan Stevens, The Promise Ring, Converge, Brand New, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Saves the Day, Mastodon, The Chemical Brothers, Yes, Ben Folds Five, Hole, The Dismemberment Plan, Run DMC, Monster Magnet).

Holy Sons ‎– I Want To Live A Peaceful Life lp

First time vinyl pressing of this lost, loner-folk gem. Recorded from 2000-2002 in Portland, Oregon by Emil Amos (Om, Grails). Limited edition of 500 copies worldwide, with two unreleased songs and Bandcamp download cards.

Exclusive to this new reissue, both bonus songs have never seen the light of day: “Peaceful Life” was recorded in 2000 by longtime Chicago engineer Pat Keneally (RIP) and “Trivialized’ is from a studio session for XRAY Radio in 2016. Both rare tracks showcase Emil in some of his most intimate performances to date.

Emil Amos has been recording and performing as Holy Sons for over twenty years now. "I Want To Live A Peaceful Life" was originally his fourth album as Holy Sons, released by FILMguerrero in 2004 right before the label folded. ABC Group Documentation has reissued the record with new artwork and worked intimately with Emil to carefully direct the remastering and production of this LP.

End Of All ‎– Places 7"

Emotive crustcore.
