Slow had me looking back into their older material, and it's clear that they've dialed things down, but still sticking to their overall emo aesthetic. This album is a slow burn, moody and melodramatic, playing up the genre of emo and math-rock fully, and while it ends up a bit too much on the homage side of things, it's still a remarkably executed ensemble.

"Deadfilm" and "Muscles" are where SPORTS' strengths are at. Fluid, dynamic and very... well, emo. There's a warmth to how the guitars wrap around each other, and honestly, you can tell they listened a lot to the first American Football album. Most of their music is guitar-driven and less focused on percussive elements, with this album probably being their most tempered and stripped down music to date. "Nod" evokes early-era At The Drive In as well (if you're a fan of Cedric Zavala on songs like "Initiation") and by the time "Word95" helps bookend things, you're enveloped in deep lyrics, and another intimate session from a band that wants to remind us how emo never died. The emocrust stalwarts from Galicia, Spain, crafted a thrilling, liberating 29-minute opus that captured the tension of global political turmoil in its many twists and turns. Now, in a post-pandemic world, the band returns with their much-anticipated third record, Arcos, bóvedas, pórticos, an expansive blackened crust/screamo opus unlike anything else.

Tenue’s musical identity, already broad and diverse, is even more challenging this time. Rooted in the legendary local neocrust scene, Tenue continues, from a modernized and more experimental perspective, the path laid by iconic acts such as Madame Germen, Ekkaia, and Ictus. This time around, as evidenced in the icy crescendo of tracks like the poetic “Enfoque,” Tenue delves even deeper into the blackened aspects of the genre, embracing its contemporary evolution. At its core, however, Arcos, bóvedas, pórticos remains a triumphant and emotive punk album, a hymn to mutual aid, direct and collective action, and the liberating power of communities fighting against capitalist alienation.

Spanning 37 minutes, Arcos, bóvedas, pórticos (translated as “Arches, vaults, porches”) conquers bleak soundscapes, transforming them into furious disharmonies that seek to erase fear and post-modern alienation. The opening track, “Inquietude,” in its 9-minute glory, is a testament to Tenue’s ability to weave heavy emoviolence, Midwest emo, and even bossa nova elements into a post-black metal skeleton that explodes in its second half. Each of the five tracks that comprise the album delivers a varied yet cohesive punch of the aforementioned subgenres, with the sole purpose of evoking thrilling sonic passages that leave listeners in awe. During the climax of the galloping “Distracción,” one of the record’s highlights, Tenue’s passionate and extreme approach resonates with the flame of sedition that fights to stay alive inside each and every one of us.

There is something communal in the way the band tailors their riffs, reminiscent of a feverish dance through motion—a joyous and unfettered creative spirit with sparkling eyes. Even in their most ambitious moments, such as the towering album finale with “Unión,” Tenue never lets go of the immediacy of their music. Their anarchist DIY politics and ethos shine through the use of extreme music as a healing force. Their sheer technicality is neither stagnant nor mindlessly brutal but stands as a testament to their boundless inspiration.

At the end of the day, Arcos, bóvedas, pórticos is a crying rally of hope and solidarity, an extended helping hand that refuses to back down amid the poison of resignation and defeat. In their most complex, emotional, and passionate release yet, Tenue finds solace in the blasphemy against societal norms. By experimenting within the limits of the emocrust subgenre, the band offers an adventurous sonic exploration of profound feelings that connect the self to the political. With this latest album, Tenue has created a transcendental crust punk monument of tenacity and passion, capable of resonating not only with those who admire the furious and experimental aspects of the subgenre but with anyone seeking purpose and meaning in a dark world that seems ever-changing, though its root of all evil remains oddly familiar. Their first full length came out way back in 2009 and since then they went on to release a split with O, two ep's and two more full lengths, always balancing somewhere on the verge of the above mentioned styles. 'Pious' is their latest lp and the first one since 2016's 'Nevermind the Light' (bar a mediocre ep titled 'Vile' in 2020).

The first thing that comes to mind when listening to 'Pious' is that it's still an ear-shattering slab of relentless aggression. A dark assault bound to rip your flesh apart and tear your insides out with the sole purpose of grilling them at a cosy neighbourhood BBQ party. Quite befitting to the person after whom the band was named (Daniel Rakowitz - google the name and be disgusted by the lunatic actions that led him to be involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital where he - as far as I know - still resides).

Anyway - in case you didn't get the point yet - this is heavy and brutal music for everyone with a sturdy backbone and a heart that's been tested and given the green light to undergo the madness. But, unlike earlier releases, the grindcore has taken a bit of a backseat. This is mainly extremely heavy and highly technical sludge with a math metal edge, a basic groove you rarely hear in grindcore and vocals that range from hardcore shouts to black metal screams.

The best example of HLR's obvious growth is given straight away. Opener 'We Don't Write Love Songs' makes an obvious statement and bursts out off the gate with all guns blazing, ready to take you down with one single bullet. 'We March to the Off Beat of Our Drums' is another standout track with a groove that wanders off into Crowbar territory, while 'Permanent Damnation' (by far the longest track clocking in at over 5 minutes) makes Eyehategod look like a bunch of school kids sharing lunch on a sunny playground. For the rest it's mayhem, havoc, violence and destruction, delivered in random order by a band that's been around for a while and has gotten so tight it's about time to loosen your studded collar a bit and give those neck muscles some well-deserved exercise. Released on January 1st 2025, this is the first big blow of 2025 and a very promising start to the new year." - Ronny Dijksterhuis / Stonehive

<iframe style="border: 0; LP

"The World Is Cursed…, the debut album by Finnish quartet Letterbombs, is an 18-minute maelstrom that embodies the visceral intensity of emo-violence, a genre that fuses the raw energy of hardcore punk with the emotional depth of screamo. This album is more than just a collection of songs; it’s a relentless, cathartic experience that captures the chaotic and often overwhelming nature of human emotion, delivered with an urgent and necessary immediacy.

From the moment the needle drops, The World Is Cursed… engulfs the listener in an abrasive and compelling torrent of sound. The band’s approach to songwriting is unyielding, characterized by a ferocious blend of dissonant guitar work, rapid-fire drumming, and vocals that vacillate between desperate screams and anguished howls. The production, intentionally raw and unpolished, enhances the abrasive qualities of the music, giving it a gritty, almost live feel that pulls the listener into the eye of the storm. This is not an album that can be passively consumed; it demands your full attention, challenging you to keep up with its pace and intensity. Letterbombs have nurtured a sound that is at once chaotic and carefully crafted. The band’s influences are clear, drawing from seminal emo-violence acts, but they push these influences to new extremes. The guitar work on the album is particularly notable for its ability to oscillate between blistering, almost incoherent noise and moments of surprising melodic clarity. These fleeting melodies often emerge from the cacophony-like rays of light piercing through dark clouds, providing a brief respite before the band plunges back into their signature chaos.

The drumming on The World Is Cursed… is equally essential to the album’s impact. It drives the music forward with relentless force, creating a sense of urgency that never lets up. The drummer’s ability to shift between breakneck speeds and more controlled, precise rhythms adds a layer of complexity to the band’s sound, making the listening experience feel like an unpredictable journey through the emotional spectrum. The bass, while often buried in the mix, provides a crucial anchor amidst the whirlwind of sound, grounding the music and adding depth to the overall sonic landscape. Vocally, Letterbombs delivers a raw and emotive performance. The screams are not just expressions of anger or pain, but convey a wide range of emotions, from despair to defiance. The lyrics, though often difficult to discern within the mix, are written with a poetic yet brutal honesty that complements the intensity of the music. The overall effect is one of catharsis as if the band is exorcising their inner demons through the sheer force of their performance." - Djordje Miladinović / Thoughts Words Action
