He doesn't quite sound like four guitarists at once or anything, but at times, as on the spare, slow-building "Montacute," the setup results in some genuinely interesting sounds. He's matched by Julien F.'s complex, jazz-oriented drumming, which sounds quite a bit like the drummers in the aggressively experimental Rock in Opposition bands that were one of France's main musical exports in the late '70s and early '80s. The resulting music is almost cacophonous at times, but there's a structural logic here that recalls King Crimson at their most cerebral. Also of note is the fact that they were labelmates (on the label RuminanCe) with another more well-known French “math rock” band that also formed in 1998, Cheval de Frise. Yes, they may have formed at the same time, in the same place, on the same record label, with the same four letters of their band names, but make no mistake: Chevreuil created a very different style of “math rock” than Cheval de Frise.

Capoëira was the final release by Chevreuil, clocking in at around 34 and a half minutes over the course of ten (really nine, “>>>+/-<<<” doesn’t count) blistering tracks of quad-amped electric guitar and synths paired with athletic (and at times, simply spasmodic) drum kit playing. Perhaps “blistering” isn’t the right word for it, as the music is never played at a particularly high tempo, nor is the instrumentation particularly “fat” or “noisy” in the way we are familiar with from other two-pieces such as Lightning Bolt or even (on the more math-y side) Planets. Instead, Chevreuil employs moderately distorted guitar, 80’s-style sawtooth and/or square synths, and clean-sounding drums in a mind-boggling way.

The staple of Chevreuil’s sound here is the heavy use of both polyrhythm and polymeter, in combination with odd time signatures (I personally spotted a 7/4 and a 13/4 when listening through, I’m sure there’s more) and a technique which I’m not aware of any music-theoretic name for, but which seems appropriate to call “metric displacement”. Just as a quick rundown/refresher, “polyrhythm” refers to multiple ways of subdividing a “metric span” (e.g. a measure could be a “metric span”) all on top of one another. “Polymeter” refers to multiple basic metric spans, all on top of one another, e.g. 3/4 on top of 4/4. “Metric displacement” is the term that I’m using for a canon-like device where the beginning of one independent part (the “1” of the first measure) occurs at a different time than the beginning of another independent part. In this case, Chevreuil are displacing often entirely different parts (unlike a canon) and often displace by amounts that are not an integer number of measures, which is extra disorienting... or interesting, depending on who you ask.

Don’t let all of this jargon talk get you down, though. While several of the things that Chevreuil does in this album are quite complex and require careful composition and performance to pull off, there is still something strangely danceable about Capoëira. The seeds of essentially all the compositions (with the exception of “Chanteur de Charme”) are really quite straightforward, even catchy. Because Chevreuil use all of the aforementioned techniques in such complex and collaged ways, it limits the way that they write the individual parts. Anything more than punchy and laconic riffs would quickly become unmanageable within Chevreuil’s composition style as shown on this album. As such, they are somewhat comparable to bands like Battles (although they predate Battles by two to four years), especially considering the looping techniques that both bands use. Chevreuil, however, display a more raw and powerful energy combined with considerably more complexity all shoved into dense song sections, like a restrained punk-rock Milton Babbitt.

The flow of the album is reasonable; not much can be said about the structuring of the album as a whole other than its stylistic cohesion, since all of the songs work just as well when standing alone. The primary break that Capoëira offers to the listener is “Chanteur de Charme”, which occurs closer to the end of the album and is a short, percussionless, nearly ambient piece consisting of sparse looped guitar plucks in the style of Brian Eno’s Music For Airports.

With even 34 minutes of Chevreuil’s music, it’s perhaps understandable that a listener could become fatigued before reaching the end of the album. One thing that can be said about Capoëira is that it is consistent; essentially all of the tracks consist of (more, or less, extended) loop-pedal experimentation to the umpteenth degree. For an album with both feet in the “experimental music” camp, this makes sense. That being said, for anything more mainstream-sounding than that, one would expect more variety in the large-scale compositional structures and in the dynamics of the music. Capoëira generally shies away from playing quietly or evoking different timbres from the instruments at work. Don’t let this, however, take away from the fact that Capoëira’s compositions are wonderfully intricate and playful at the same time. The technical feats on this album are not to be understated, and Chevreuil show that they are more than capable of making technical and experimental music sound sincerely interesting." - Sputnik Music

Instrumental Quarter ‎– Traffic Jam CD

"This is just brilliantly original, deeply soulful, well constructed instrumental Bliss! With Che Arthur, however, the guitarist/songwriter seems to have the opposite problem: he's behind the time, and not in the kind of way that bands like the Strokes or Interpol, who have reached back to the '70s for inspiration, are. Instead, Arthur turns to mid-'90s grunge and post-grunge, a style that hasn't necessarily aged all that gracefully, at least from the vantage point of ten years out. His sophomore album, Iron, is the kind of thing that would be a decent enough find in 1995, but in 2007, it comes across as trite and a little tedious. Arthur goes for the lo-fi, D.I.Y. approach here, instead of glossy Foo Fighters-esque production (which might have served him better), but because his lyrics are so dramatic, the kind of thing a literate teenager might write, this only seems amateurish, with a guitar that sounds like it needs new strings, vocals mixed far too low (especially on the perplexing title song, in which they're so soft it is only apparent that they exist; what he is actually saying is completely unintelligible), and monotonous melodies, both inter- and intra-song. Even the guitar, the instrument Arthur played with the band Atombombpocketknife, is pretty unmemorable, occasionally finding an interesting riff but more often sticking empty, droning, open-string heavy chords that weigh down the record and the singer's voice. A few times -- "Revisionism," for example -- he's able to break out from this pattern and put something with musically worthwhile parts together, but unfortunately this is the exception rather than the rule, and makes Iron a rather tiresome listen overall." - Marisa Brown

Ants, The ‎– Ideabreaker CD

"The third album by Kansas indie rockers the Ants sounds rather like what would happen if one of the current crop of anthemic indie rockers -- the Hold Steady or Marah, perhaps -- stumbled upon an iPod filled with Music from Big Pink, the third Velvet Underground album, and a couple of early Steely Dan records, and used it as inspiration for their next album. The rough-edged indie rock vibe in scrupulously maintained throughout Ideabreaker: even on overtly country-oriented songs like the pedal steel-led "Jesus," there's still a shambolic, rough-and-tumble quality to the live-sounding performances. But at heart, the songs are based on a quirky blend of jazz-rocking electric piano, country and blues song forms, and the just-came-down melancholy that suffuses songs like "Candy Says," along with even more unexpected touches like the jaunty horn section that powers "Statues," which makes it sound weirdly like an indie rock take on Chicago circa "25 or 6 to 4." Other highlights include the oddball easy listening fusion of "The Donkey Talking About Long Ears" and the catchy roots-rocking opener, "Bootheel," which also features the album's most instantly memorable chorus. Howard Hello really didn’t do anything much for me. For those not in the know, Howard Hello is similar to much of the other stuff on the Temporary Residence Ltd. label. However, unlike some of their bigger acts (Mono, Explosions in the Sky), Howard Hello doesn’t have any crunchy guitars that kick in. This is all very floaty, ambient fare (with the exception of the final track) with male and female vocals that seem pleasant enough. With the abundance of lots of programmed keyboards and acoustic guitar, this material may be somewhat sissy in some aspects, especially for readers of this zine. And so it goes: this is a bizarre album, and sometimes you feel like the band's collective tongue is in its collective cheek, yet everything is so well executed and adventurous on this wheeling indie prog fantasy trip that you really have to wonder. A good rule to follow in music, as in life, is that if someone has to work hard to convince others that they're wild and creative and kooky, then that person is not actually any of those things. Happily, for his second album, Gideon wisely decided to mellow the heck out and stop trying too hard to be weird. As a result, Flight of the Liophant is a far more satisfying album that emphasizes those elements of Welcome Song that had been pretty interesting despite the lameness of the rest. The deliberately awkward nerdcore rapping is severely curtailed, and even on those songs where Gideon does choose to rap, his flow is considerably more natural and easygoing. The obnoxious noise-terrorist aspects are largely gone, with the occasional bursts of deliberate ugliness better integrated into the album's easygoing mutation of D.I.Y. indie pop and underground hip-hop. So there's still little here that Beck wasn't doing better on his early indie albums, but Flight of the Liophant is so much less irritating than Welcome Song had been that it's nearly impossible not to find it comparatively charming." - Stewart Mason

L'ocelle Mare s/t cd

"This one might be a hard sell -- 16 untitled tracks of largely acoustic guitar instrumentals (sometimes banjo instead of guitar, sometimes with some kind of mouth harp I think, sometimes with rudimentary percussion on occasion) on a self-titled record with virtually no info in the booklet and by a guy with a hard-to-pronounce French (or is it Italian?) monkier. Back in 2005, the guys put it out themselves in a small run of hand-made CDs. Having heard and loved this record for such a long time, we at Sick Room Records have decided to finally give it a wider release. The three Mikes (Bridavsky, Notaro, Hoggatt) all live and play in the backwoods of southern Indiana. In all honesty, I find it quite difficult to find another band to compare them to. It s just good, honest, smart rock music; pop infused with a little crunch and a lot of love. If I had to reference them to someone else, maybe I would say The Minutemen. Not necessarily as far as the songs, but more in terms of their lack of pretense, their humility, and their great attitude towards life and music. Mike Bridavsky sums it up thusly, in better words than I can summon at the moment: I guess our whole thing is that we just write music that we find clever, interesting and stimulating. It's something we'd actually want to (and do) listen to. We enjoy incorporating pop elements into our music, but just enough so that it's not overkill. Most of our lyrics are cryptic and include secrets, hints and references to things that may very well be undetectable by the most listeners. For example, we purposefully steal lyrics and riffs from classic and/or unknown bands/songs because we think it's funny and clever, and we consider it more like a reference or commentary. So basically we just do what we think is brilliant and awesome, and realize (and don't care) that most people probably don't agree. Most importantly each of us is an equal contributor to our music. That is why it comes out the way it does, as an accurate representation of the three of us. I once heard someone joke around and say that authenticity is the new irony. If that s true, then why not pick up HELLO SOLDIER!!!, because it has plenty of both...

Quatre Tête ‎– Art Of The State CD

"Some bands are just made to play in grungy, grimey, dirty, spit-on-the-floor kind of bars. Not that you have to be drunk to listen to Art of the State by any means, but you need to be prepared for some abrupt changes, and a few beers makes those changes easier to take. But where most bands fall into the tried and true method of something that sounds good, Quatre Tete start with something starting muddy and dirty and try to make something beautiful out of it. The brand of rock isn’t exactly beautiful by any means, but it is some good, not-so-clean fun." - Peter Woodburn

The Blackbelt Band ‎– A New Community CD

Minimalist post punk.

Gideon, Alexis ‎– Video Musics CD + DVD

After his first two releases Welcome Song (2007 Sickroom Records) and Flight of the Liophant (2007 Sickroom Records), Alexis Gideon has broadened his already expansive musical vision with the creation of his genre-busting animated/claymated video opera Video Musics (9/1/2009 USA: Sickroom Records/11/2/2009 Europe: African Tape).

A couple years ago, Gideon discovered that six of his eight great-grandparents were Hungarian. From early on in his life, he has played with a number of different groups, and over the years ended up supporting bands like The Fall, Echo And The Bunnymen, Clinic, John Cooper Clarke, Leaves, Future Of The Left, Archie Bronson Outfit. His current Project, Detective Instinct, was born out of a combination of boredom and a need for distraction... I began by going through old tapes and realizing a lot of it was good stuff and i needed to do something worthwhile with it so I wrote to a few friends from bands I d been involved in or had played with and then we began a type of online exchange of recordings: I d send tracks out then they d add vocals and send them back, Mike Watt heard the songs on myspace and wrote asking if he could play them on his radio show in LA so i chanced my arm and asked him if he wanted to get involved, which he did. I then began asking other people who s work i admired and was surprised by how many people wanted to contribute, and it went from there... Buried in the mix of the songs are field recordings of haunted buildings, people going about their business, and lots of found sounds recorded while he was on tour throughout Europe with Das Wanderlust. The imagery for the series as well, was found in an old book of woodcuts bought in a dusty bookshop in a small seaside town, assembled with the help of Nicky Peacock. Their new EP, In The Pond, is a 4 song 12 with music on one side, and a sweet little etching by Rosemary Hoeft on the other. It is a very nice record. Elisha describes their process thusly: the band started as a fake joke band name bob and i were using with some vague intention of maybe playing some music. we asked chris to be the drummer in the fake band. a while after that we decided to actually do it, sent demos back and forth and got together at bobs house in chicago for a couple days of recording and eating hot dogs. Basically it's just 3 friends playing punk rock. all of us have larger musical commitments outside of the ferries but, for me at least, it was fun to just kind of come up with a silly idea see it turn into something really cool. There is definitely a tone of desperation present, but it does not arrive without an underlying vibration of hope as its constant companion. As profound as our desires may be, when salvation seems to be a million miles away, we must always remember, that at the root of our existence is an eternal wellspring of hope, a fundamental love that exists within us and can never be broken. Sick Room is very pleased to help them realize their next effort, a fantastic self-titled, full length LP. Cooked up in 2008 by three housemates and longtime friends in their Chicago home studio, a number of different influences help shape their sound. Midwest post-punk (The Jesus Lizard, Tar) at the roots, a healthy dash of So-Cal freak out (RFTC, Hot Snakes) along with their own experimental herbs and spices all serve to create a potent, magical, high-energy witches brew. When all these elements come to a boil, things really start to pop and sizzle. Matt Seifert and Kris Poulin revel in their duality, as their guitar lines and vocals collide and intertwine with one another, while Drummer Jim Duffy pounds things out at the nucleus, creating a focal point to the swarming musical mélange. Legendary engineer Steve Albini, has also come back to lend his mastery to Full Of as well, working at Oxygen Studios, a wonderful new facility in the north of Italy owned by guitarist Paride Lanciani. As they have matured over time, the quartet has changed up their extreme and destructive style to offer a more composed, confident, fresh and direct sound. The new record contains 8 songs whose hermetic lyrics tell about emotions, opinions of real life, and marginalization in a world of continuous and rapid change. Slow songs, stop/start changes, and dynamic fast riffs are some of the other characteristic elements of Full Of. More Shellac than Son Volt, the Gary continues the barbed fury of its previous, Steve Albini-produced El Camino EP with industrial-strength lament "Fair Weatherer" and squalling "Innocent Bystander." The second half's more brooding, darkened by bassist Dave Norwood's rusted vignettes. Opener "Valhalla" nails the best of both with a veiled reference to former Rep. And in any good record collection should be Freddie T. and the People. Songwriter and bandleader Fred Erskine (guitar, vocals) has made a career of being in bands you may have seen live or whose records you may have bought, including : Hoover, June of 44, The Crownhate ruin, The Boom, Abilene, and Just a Fire. He has also jammed with or played on records by Make Up, Trans Am, Him, and the Sorts, to name a few. The People (Josh McKinney, guitar; Andrew Greenburg, bass; Dino Maglinte, drums; Matt Chandler, trumpet; Bret Reyburn, trumpet) are all seasoned musicians who have made a career of playing shows you may not have seen and making records you probably haven t bought, but should have. The music of Freddie T. and The People is, gritty, bulldog soul (Rivierfront Times), an upbeat take on rock and classic rhythm and blues. Fred writes songs about working hard at work and at home, as a husband and father. The songs avoid the cliché of the world-weary musician, and rather provide a soundtrack for long summer nights of back yard grilling with friends and loved ones. These are desperate songs with a shout of promise for the future. Though older now, Fred isn t resting on his laurels or losing his edge. According to Alive! (Columbus, Oh), Thankfully, rather than fumble through one of those mature impressions of Johnny Cash or Tom Waits that inevitably score rave reviews in Rolling Stone, Erskine has opted to make something like a Fool s Gold album. The bands latest LP, Gypsy City , it s second full length album, is themed on the notion that despite all the struggle there is a place where we can all meet and be free. In Gypsy City, we shrug the oppression of financial responsibilities for a place where dreamers can work hard at the things they love and enjoy the fruits of their labor. A place where people bring good ideas to share and improve upon. Gypsy City was recorded at Russian Recording Studio with Mike Birdavsky (Rogue Wave, Murder by Death, We are Hex, Magnolia Electric Co., Racebannon). In that same vein, We Ride On s debut album, entitled Have Some, could be compared to a rage-filled drive circumnavigating the great NYC island of Manhattan. It starts with the lane shifting Hot Spit, much like a 50,000cc engine exploding out of a Lower East Side garage onto the badly paved streets. With Knifeback City and Sand Queen, we furiously climb up the FDR Drive with tales of betrayal on the brain. As if we switched off at one of the final exits on the island and took a long short cut through Harlem, we come upon the grunge induced Plastic Vampire Teeth and the sexy and sleazy Dirt Cheap. The album s title track, Have Some, puts us back on the highway heading in a south-bound descent. Out On The Road takes this vengeful ride to the brink of self-destruction. The instrumental track, Theme, takes us on a detour through Hell s Kitchen and avoids any Disneyland ideas of Times Square. Finally, we are driven to the end of Manhattan and taken out of the car for a walk on the West Side Highway. We Ride On is comprised of Rhett Mataix, Stephen McColl, and Aaron Boroughs, whose former projects include Degrassi, Molasses Tavern, and Jan Cux. Have Some was recorded at The Kennel in Brooklyn, NY over a weekend in late spring: one day to record the music live to 2 inch tape, the next for vocals and various percussion. Mixed by Andy Manganello (Johnny Cash, Björk) and mastered by Grammy winner Pablo Arraya, We Ride On makes their debut on Chicago s Sick Room Records in the form of 10 inch vinyl accompanied by a CD.

Marvin ‎– Barry lp

Marvin are a three piece band from Montpellier France. Like three mighty gods, Emilie, Greg and Fred use all their powers to create some of the most glorious, sexy electro-punk to sweep across the landscape. Imagine that a storm is brewing, the heavens torn asunder. >From the west you have solid, riff-heavy rock and roll, the electricity of AC/DC infused with the venom of the Jesus Lizard, blowing through town like a fierce wind. >From the south we see another current approaching, bombastic, throbbing, sensual, Eno-inspired, big-beat electronica. Originally intended to be a studio-only project, several recordings were made at Steve Albini s Electrical Audio complex in Chicago. It eventually evolved into a live band trio, turning abstract and sometimes complicated recorded pieces into songs that can be played by 3 instruments. The sound is a combination of abrasive indie rock, odd time signatures, shoegazer pop, and psychedelic fuzz; all bound together by distinctive melodic vocals and deadpan humor. Three Against Four was the product of a year's worth of songwriting and honing through regional live performances. Pennington's elaborate guitar style and dry vocals are as present as ever, but the addition of Brent Mix's polyphonic bass lines (not to mention lead vocals on "Given Time") and Daniel Costello's methodical drum parts make this the most collaborative RR recording by far. The instruments were captured in a single room with very little separation, meaning the listener is hearing the most true representation of the musicians interacting with each other as possible. Every Radiant record has been slightly more melodic than the previous one, though 3VS4 features some of the band's most agitated 'sheets of noise' as well. This is also the first record to be released by an outside label, notably Chicago's long-running and eclectic Sick Room Records (Bear Claw, Three Second Kiss, Papier Tigre, etc.) Despite a half-dozen releases and a decade under its belt, Three Against Four sounds like the work of a young band aiming to leave its mark within the world of uncompromising underground rock.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2606/0952/products/rr_cc8197c3-7649-437c-b4d3-a196bc2c96f2.jpg?v=1623349488
king-champion-sounds-different-drummer-lp
King Champion Sounds ‎– Different Drummer LP

King Champion Sounds ‎– Different Drummer LP

What if The Fall had garnished their rockabilly grooves with swing-era horns? Daniel, guitarist/vocalist, is a Chinese teacher. Drummer Roberto owns a funeral home, and the bassist, Andrea, is a gravedigger. A pretty weird mix one might say. The band came together when Daniel moved back to Italy from China in 2011 with the idea to make a record. He couldn't think of any other musicians to help him than his good friends Roberto and Andrea, so they rekindled their long-standing relationship. We started playing together during high school but it was different, we were just kids and we all weren t ready to make a serious record. After 10 years and different musical experiences we got back together, older, changed and ready to work hard to get a record done. We have been going through a very productive two years and during rehearsals all the music just comes out like a flow, starting from some guitar notes or a drum and bass rhythm, the vocal improvisation comes out pretty natural too. We really believe this record and our music are special because we sing in Italian but we don t sound like a tipical italian band at all, our decision to get the record done at The Oxygen studios was because we wanted that particular sound that is so not common here. Music is the mirror of our existence at this right moment of our lives, it s pretty tricky to describe our music, very different atmospheres lay together, an alternative psychedelic folk rock blend mostly, but what we all have clear in our mind is a rule in our composition: taking things out instead of putting too much cr*p in. Alienation in this society, sex as a cure and death are the three main topics of our record. Two thirds of the band work with people in mourning every day, and we end up talking about death all the time. We all believe it s very natural, and this is what the general concept of the album is, the natural stream of things in today s sick society. People are all like pigs, very simple animals, ready to eat and destroy whatever it s thrown in front of them. You can eat everything out of a pig and this is like the three of us, very transparent, open and direct. Everyone should buy this vinyl because there is an entire world described by simple, repetitive and direct grooves, give Italian alternative music a chance, plus, its cover it s just fabulous and full of meanings. I recently wrote about Flamingods' pretty good Hyperborea, and this is another glorious Frankenstein's Monster of a record. Black Floral comes 3 years after Heffernan's first album under the Detective Instinct moniker. The History of Headaches/American Novels was one of my favourite albums of 2011 (and I'd urge anyone with an ounce of musical taste to seek it out. Clue - it's here) and Black Floral takes that model and runs with it. Put together under sometimes tough circumstances the album can be dark, even menacing but there's also numerous moments of brightness, perhaps a built-in benefit of such a collaborative project. This one has turns from GW Sok (The Ex), Kevin Branstetter (Trumans Water), Jad Fair (Half Japanese) and Mike Watt (Minutemen) to name but a few. Each guest puts their own spin on Heffernan's compositions which vary between contemplative, meandering, psychotic, but always atmospheric, never dull. Black Floral is another fine accomplishment and hopefully not the last we'll see from Detective Instinct. Listen to "The Architect of Negative Space" - the first of 2 Karen Schoemer collaborations, this track is a short story laden with lo-fi synth and poppy 80's bass, one of the lighter moments on Black Floral. Also one of the best. "The Sum Of A Son" - a short acoustic number which I would most accurately describe as "mellow". Surprising seeing that it's main players are Oli Heffernan (a member of noisy bastards Year Of Birds) and Mike Watt (Minutemen). This time around, we find them battered and bruised from loves lost and lives rearranged, but steadfastly vertical and plodding forward. Songs of insomnia, divorce, urban sprawl, strange childhood memories, bombastic arrival, cautious optimism, possibility, and a Mountain Goats cover for good measure. The Gary began in 2008 as an informal gathering three friends with instruments, with no more ambition than to get together and break up the monotony of the workweek. Somewhere, between the discussions of music, family, favorite beer, and job-related woe, songs began to form, resulting in the Chub EP. Songs continued to accumulate, and an LP materialized- 2010's Logan. The album was well-received, and The Gary began taking their act on the road. While in Chicago, they checked into Electrical Audio studios and recorded a session with Steve Albini. This was released in early 2011 as El Camino. Their next album, Remains, followed shortly after in fall 2012, along with a European tour and a string of dates with Mission Of Burma. 2014's Farewell Foolish Objects is their second release on Sick Room Records.
