We had so many strange ideas, which all amounted to a brief stint in time. I’m not sure why, but initially we started the band, wrote the material for our first record, and were really set on getting a straight edge record label to release it, all in the matter of a couple months. However, no SXE labels were “cutting edge” enough to take a liking to us, so we somehow talked our friend Mark Waters to release it, who at the time ran Goldenrod, a local San Diego label. We were certainly an odd band for the label’s primarily indie rock roster, but Mark was and is one of the raddest people I’ve ever met, and for some reason he had so much enthusiasm towards our band and towards releasing our album. For the most part, we were use to having nothing, no support, no help, and Mark seemed to have it all: a van that he drove us to shows in, he let us do whatever we wanted as far as packaging, and even got us free skateboards.
We opted for the silk-screened one-sided clear vinyl thing, threw an image of a bunch of insects on it, and had a screening party at the house that is now known as “Locust House,” due to Adam Gnade’s book. Mark had us recruit a few friends to help print, he showed up with a ton of pizza, and in no time every flat surface of the house was covered in creepy insect silk-screened records. As much as we wanted to have a really really bad attitude, we just really wanted to mess with people and try to push people’s buttons.

Initially we set out as this pseudo-Misfits type band, but that eventually morphed into an all out absurd-whatever-goes-that-is-sketchy type vibe, which usually resulted in a bunch of people, including band members, being completely naked at shows. Not to mention the crowd started to show up in various costumes, mostly in drag. Somehow none of us in the band died, we managed to play a handful of shows in a few states, and then we called it quits for reasons unknown. Shortly after the band stopped, Goldenrod also stopped, so Three One G took the opportunity to repress the album with slightly different artwork and packaging, along with silk-screen variations and colors for the vinyl. What a strange bunch of people we were. Propelled to new heights by O’Connell’s percussive attack, the song’s key refrain (“I don’t wanna go”) is a weird paean to more nihilistic and more self-destructive times, before Joyner, who was nearly killed in 2012 after being struck by a car, had to be put back together again by all the king’s horses and men.

Some tracks split the difference between this shake-your-ass hookiness and avant-garde hostility. The A riff on “EmotiKanye” is pure danceability, with Jyawook’s sawtooth bassline squarely in the pocket—imagine the Funk Brothers cruising for pills and drank in the Cat’s Eye Nebula. The chorus, though, turns that beat around on a dense, splattery, Locust-like tag, with O’Connell’s and Jyawook’s urgent groove on the B riff underpinning cascades of ring-modulated guitar. Lyrically, the song explores the masturbatory self-surveillance of the online social-media complex. Karlos Paez is an energetic frontman, also known for his role as vocalist for San Diego’s premiere Latin Music project, The B-Side Players. With his unique vocal styling and ability to deliver a magnetic performance, Karlos produces lyrics that seduce a dancer to cut loose, while inducing the spirit of both culture and rebellion. On it, bands like Melt-Banana, Weasel Walter, The Locust, Bastard Noise and The Blood Brothers unapologetically tackled some of the most beloved and universally recognizable music in popular culture and made it nasty, noisy, and brutal– and they did so with nothing but love and respect. This was followed by an equally bold tribute to Australian avant-garde legends The Birthday Party, entitled Release The Bats. More frenetic energy from the likes of bands like Cattle Decapitation, Das Oath, SSion and Some Girls, more chaotic feedback giving way to unsettling synth lines, and still (knock on wood) not a lawsuit in sight.

It is only fitting, then, that Three One G’s one hundredth release be another tribute, this time to an iconic band known for its raunchy and pure punk spirit, all while looking effortlessly cool: The Cramps. For the label’s third comp, the lineup of musicians enlisted to take part is even more diverse, including the likes of Chelsea Wolfe, Daughters, Mike Patton, and Metz, among others– all members, in some way or another, of the extended Three One G family. Here you’ll hear everything from Cumbia-style Cramps as interpreted by Sonido De La Frontera, to Panicker’s electronic dance-centric distorted version of “I’m Cramped”. Just as The Cramps mastered the art of covering music through their own warped lens, Three One G carries on the torch of re-imagining songs with swagger and style, making it their own while honoring a band whose influence on the label is obvious.

Really Bad Music for Really Bad People:
Child Bite “TV Set”
Metz “Call of the Wighat”
Secret Fun Club feat. MacGregor complements with tortuous lines that invoke eastern melodic ideas at times, though they seethe with distortion and gurgle queasily through analog filtering. His vocal palette has widened to include an unhinged/unschooled falsetto and a Teutonic metal shriek, used to great effect on “Hammerspace” alongside Kuzy’s wavering, town-crier bark. Existing during summer 1991, its membership boasted Matt Anderson, Scott Bartoloni and Aaron Montaigne of seminal 90s band Heroin, who, for the most part, had switched instruments. Further intensifying this lineup was leather-throated vocalist Cory Linstrum. A mutual appreciation of Bl’ast!, Faith, Void and SSD acted as its starting point, leading the band down the left hand path of chaotic punk and hardcore. EOTL played a dozen shows during its brief reign. Its teeth were cut appearing alongside Aspirin Feast, Say No More, Struggle, Undertow, Downcast, Media Children and Blatz (among others), before obtaining an opening slot on a Born Against/Rorschach show. The display of raw pandemonium unleashed that evening saw End of the Line’s buzz spread to the East Coast as these bands returned from tour. Rapidly a bidding war began with EOTL in the middle. Vermiform offered a seven-inch deal, while Ebullition dangled the opportunity of a full length. The band chose the full length. Having previously recorded three tracks, EOTL now had the opportunity to record the rest of its set for posterity. The band was aware it wouldn’t last much longer. Heroin would be releasing its own LP and leaving for tour, while Linstrum would relocate to the Bay Area to front John Henry West. It was during these recording dates that End of the Line concluded with its final appearance, a September 1991 show with Fugazi and Jawbreaker. Without an active band to promote the release, Ebullition’s version of the End of the Line LP wallowed in obscurity, where it slowly became a cult classic of early 90s hardcore. Their sound is thunderous and chaotic, utilizing a wall of noise techniques through an onslaught of keys, guitars and drums. Myke Pelly’s off kilter drumming and Colin Dawson’s architectural noise structures create jittery post-punk that is both upbeat and gloomy. Most recently, the band enlisted Seattle-based bassist Brian McClelland of Filth is Eternal and He Whose Ox is Gored, creating an added level of heavy rhythmic noise that not only contributes an exciting dynamic layer to the album sonically, but to their already-captivating live performance as well. The bleak vocals are persistently ominous in a seductive way, conjuring up the nightmarish aura of a dissonant horror-film soundtrack. With reviewers like Anthony Fantano (Needle Drop) likening their previous work to legendary bands such as Swans, Bauhaus, and Killing Joke, Haunted Horses carry on the tradition of noise that can terrorize as well as entrance, oftentimes simultaneously. This is evident in the list of hard-hitting contemporaries they’ve shared the stage and toured with, including Lingua Ignota, Portrayal of Guilt, A Place to Bury Strangers, Bambara, and Boy Harsher. The band, made up of Justin Pearson, Jose Palafox, John Brady and Eric Allen drew inspiration from jazz and swing era ethics, creating a strand of genre-defying music. The band was short lived, documenting their entire existence in a handful of songs/releases over a couple of years. The band did their last few shows recruiting Jimmy Lavalle who was part of notable acts such as The Locust, The Crimson Curse, The Black Heart Procession, Gogogo Airheart, and Album Leaf, to play second guitar. Then the unexpected happened; guitarist and founding member of Swing Kids and Unbroken, Eric Allen, took his own life. Over a decade later, and Eric still lives on in his music. The final chapter of the band was written, as the remaining members had the opportunity to play two benefit shows in Southern California raising thousands of dollars for charity. The shows, or “funerals” as the band members looked at it, displayed that the band’s spirit will live on, and showcased the evolution of the remaining members’ musicianship. Jose Palafox went on to play in notable acts such as Bread and Circuits, Yaphet Kotto, and Baader Brains. Bassist John Brady has since played in Sweep The Leg Johnny and Agonista. Vocalist Justin Pearson is known for contributing to a multitude of bands and projects over the years including Dead Cross, The Locust, Retox, Planet B, Head Wound City, and Deaf Club.

One of Three One G’s earliest releases was Swing Kids’ S/T 7” EP, which featured four original tracks as well as a harsh version of Joy Division’s “Warsaw”. Soon after the band released this EP, they followed up with a split 10” EP with Spanakorzo, which shared band member John Brady. After a few short tours and a jaunt over to Europe, the band called it quits due to drummer Jose Palafox relocating to the Bay Area. Swing Kids did manage to track one last song, “El Camino Car Crash” which is the additional track on the digital follow-up of the band’s entire collection, simply titled “Discography”. Over the years, this nine-song collection would become a staple for the Three One G community. After the sudden and immense loss of founding member Eric Allen, the band reformed to play two charity shows in his memory, and the documentation of this final chapter was a self-titled 7” single featuring an updated version of “Situation on Mars” as well as a new track titled, “Fake Teeth”. For the first time, all of these tracks have been remastered by Brent Asbury and are in one physical release, the complete “Anthology”.

Satanic Planet s/t lp

SATANIC PLANET is the creation of Lucien Greaves (The Satanic Temple co-founder and spokesperson), Luke Henshaw (Planet B, Sonido de la Frontera), Dave Lombardo (Slayer, The Misfits, Mr. Bungle, Suicidal Tendencies, Dead Cross), and Justin Pearson (The Locust, Dead Cross, Swing Kids, Deaf Club). With the birth of Satanic Planet, hip-hop producer Henshaw and punk provocateur Pearson joined co-founder and spokesperson of The Satanic Temple, Lucien Greaves– the most prominent and outspoken contemporary Satanist in the world. Greaves has gained international attention as an advocate for religious liberty and the voice of the Satanic Reformation, delivering lectures nationwide and featured in national media outlets including MSNBC, NPR, Huffington Post Live, CNN, Harper’s Monthly, Newsweek, Fox News, Vice, Salon, Rolling Stone, and many more. As the trio were diligently working, and nearly completed with, the music for their debut album, the worldwide pandemic hit, seemingly bringing things to a halt. However, with the onset of this new way of living, the newly-formed band was in a unique position to enlist the legendary Dave Lombardo, who found himself not touring for the first time in years, and suddenly having more time to work in his home studio on projects that interested him. With the addition of this iconic drummer, Satanic Planet was complete.

Here, Greaves moves beyond spoken word and into lyricism, with the experimental musical backing of Henshaw, the demonic vocals of Pearson, and the diverse, score-like approach of Lombardo. This collaboration embraces the avant garde to create sci-fi sermons that range from doom and industrial to evil exotica. Written and recorded during the 2017 Strange Peace sessions with Steve Albini, these two beloved offerings, initially left on the cutting room floor, were revisited, reworked, and ultimately reinvigorated during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. With “Acid” and “Slow Decay” the Canadian trio continue to break new ground while honing their ever-evolving nuanced approach to pummeling rhythms and off kilter melodies. The albums title was inspired by some of these heavy influences and the theme continues lyrically with a focus on the disturbing flaws of people and religion, love and dreams. The record was meant to be released in 2018, but was put on hold while they went on short hiatus to address some of their differences. Their association with The Locust formed much of the original basis for their popularity in hardcore circles, which was unusual for a band that growled out the type of disturbing, gore-oriented lyrics usually reserved for Carcass/Cannibal Corpse audiences. However, as the years went by and their connections to the Locust finally severed personnel-wise, it became clear that they were indeed a real band of their own, not a side project; they eventually signed to established metal powerhouse label Metal Blade Records and, musically, took on more of a professional death metal sound while retaining their original pro-vegetarian/gore-oriented lyrical stance. Cattle Decapitation originally formed in San Diego in 1996. The lineup featured David Astor on bass and Gabe Serbian on drums — both of whom were then also members of The Locust — as well as an unknown guitarist/vocalist, who soon allegedly vanished without the other members knowing anything of his whereabouts. Seeking a replacement on vocals, the band turned to Travis Ryan. With Ryan on board, Astor moved from bass to drums, and Serbian moved from drums to guitar. This lineup quickly released two albums, the Human Jerky LP and the Homovore CD/LP.
