It's hard not to think of fog and wind and rain and other weather phenomena when listening to this. Some sunshine breaks through the clouds on the second, more pop ambient-ish piece. Gauzy, gentle, drifting, vaguely melodious fuzzzzzz. Nice. The other tracks here tend to either get physical with the grinding, dramatic drone, or stay on the soothing side of things, sometimes blissfully both. There's various degrees of abstraction as well, as Gargaud adjusts his admixture of guitar and electronics. One extreme would be the crackling crinkling night-noises of "Clairere" (how can that be a guitar?), but elsewhere on the disc the guitar is more recognizable, in fact, on "Mer Du Nord", you can actually hear strings being strummed, how 'bout that!Recommended - and in future, we'll definitely pay attention to anything Gargaud releases!" - Aquarius Records

Olivier Dumont - Living In Holes And Disused Shafts CD

Olivier Dumont is ancillary to the noise he invokes. They create a stunning kind of meta-music that sound anarchic and futuristic at the same time. In 2008 composer/musician Daniel Vujanic began to shape vibrant bodies of sound. Atmospheric guitar lines, morphing drone clouds, minimalist patterns and crunching electronics that wouldn't fit into the aesthetic and musical parameters of his previous projects (Baja, Höhlenmusik Ensemble, E Jugend). The compositional results were demanding a very specific rhythmical backbone. One that could underpin and enforce Vujanic's distillation of euphoric noise, hallucinatory constructivism, and the hollow bones of rock 'n' roll. That's the point where drummer Yoshihiro Kikuchi came in. An integral part of Japan's vivid noise music scenery and also a colorful percussionist, he manages to combine massive minimalism, dense improv and ritualistic polyhythms. The self-titled debut album effortlessly creates a blissful intensity with its additive compositional approach, sounding orchestral at times employing strings and synthesizers as well as sparse injections of glockenspiel, found sounds, piano, vibes and woodwinds. The distinctive front cover talks about the mystic whoredom of death, a motif that has existed throughout rock 'n' roll's underground history. This artwork stands on the same tradition, but alters the detailed elements in whole, from the inside by contemporary editing approaches by Kikuchi, to resonate with sound contents. His perspective of music is so deeply rooted in the human soul it’s easy to forget how detailed and complex he shapes his sound material. Recordings are rare, performances rarer still. She emerges every few years, says what she wants to say, and disappears back to her extramusical life. She made her debut as a teenager, fronting doom band Thorr’s Hammer (formed by Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson) on 1996’s Dommedagsnatt EP, then went un-heard-from for nearly a decade before appearing on 2003’s White1, by O’Malley and Anderson’s new project, Sunn O))). Three more years passed, and she formed Khlyst with James Plotkin and Tim Wyskida of Khanate, making one album—2006’s Chaos is My Name—and a deliberately hard-to-find live DVD, Chaos Live. In 2008, she made her solo debut with Amplicon.

Quantum Entanglement, also on Utech, is a very different beast. It’s another collaboration, this time with noise musician Lasse Marhaug. And where Amplicon featured 11 tracks, none reaching the five-minute mark, the new album (it’s only available digitally or on vinyl) offers two side-long pieces, the 16:25 “Ungilded” and the 17:07 “Simony.” Marhaug is clearly interested in a slow build, a cumulative result, rather than juxtaposing one thing against another in an assaultive collage. Gammelsaeter, for her part, is reciting her lyrics rather than singing them—it’s like a spoken word or poetry album, with synthesizers oozing and rumbling behind her, and what sounds like cymbals being softly tapped and rattled. Atop this cohesive and mood-based musical backdrop, there are multiple layers of vocals, some subject to radical electronic manipulation (to the point that they sound like giant dogs growling in hell) and others clear and comprehensible. At times, Gammelsaeter seems to be arguing with herself, or offering cryptic commentary on her own thoughts. Language becomes an instrument, recalling the diced-up phrases of Antje Greie-Fuchs (aka AGF) on albums like Head Slash Bauch and Words are Missing. Quantum Entanglement is a dark, absorbing release that sucks the listener in for its full 35-minute running time, taking fans on a journey deep into Runhild Gammelsaeter‘s mind and reminding them just how fascinating a place that can be." - Burning Ambulance

Mats Gustafsson – This Is From The Mouth LP - Picture disc

"Saxophonist Mats Gustafsson progressed beyond the free jazz label some time ago, especially considering his recent releases with Merzbow, Thurston Moore, and Balazs Pandi, Slobber Pup, and others. The only instruments played on these eight pieces are drums and cymbals, but Aquarius uses closely placed microphones, reverb, and an equalizer to create a varied collection of dark, unusual sounds. We hear low drones, deep rumblings, metal meeting metal, metal catching light, a dying heartbeat, the long lingering after-echoes of a cymbal crash. Even through the effects and other technical tricks, the tactile feel of Aquarius’ playing remains, giving the tracks a rich quality that I usually associate with expertly recorded jazz albums. Guitarist Michael Vallera and drummer Steven Hess didn’t exactly split up, but they spent enough time on other projects — Luggage, Locrian, Haptic, Innode, and solo work — that the band seemed to have gone on ice. But time away can clarify why you did something in the first place, and the duo’s fourth long player asserts a renewed sense of purpose.

While even a cursory listen to this CD — Cleared’s first after a string of analog releases — detects that it’s the same people using the same tools, the relationships between their materials have evolved. You will still hear chunks of stripped-down rock and expanses of layered, electronically sculpted sound. But where Cleared once presented these elements in sequence, they are combined on Serpens in a way that draws more attention to the whole. The cover, which depicts contoured images that have been cut up and copied to make a new, discreet entity, is an apt metaphor for what Hess and Vallera have done with passages derived from sustained cymbal overtones, tolling guitar notes and pinging circuits. You don’t hear the joins between passages, you hear them as a thing punctuated by subtly magnified events — a microphone bump, one hissing note — that put everything in relief without being separated from said thing. The CD format’s innate combination of bounded listening and potential continuity reinforces the experience of Serpens as a complete and bounded entity; unless you insist on dumping it into a playlist or library, it will occupy a passage of time that is unbroken between beginning and end.

Cover aside, this music does not have much time for metaphor. It is what it is, as if Hess and Vallera decided that in order for there to be a point to a fourth Cleared album, they’d have to both advance the use of Cleared’s sonic vocabulary and hone in on its essence. I have been following the Dutch duo Dead Neanderthals for years now. The band’s core, Otto Kokke on sax and René Aquarius on drums, has remained constant in personnel, but has transformed the project from a spazzy, blow-until-your-eyes burst act to a group focused on long, intense siren-sounds overlaying a steady, thudding percussive rhythms. The intensity is still there, but it is more focused than on their earlier efforts.

This transformation has taken place incrementally over the a few years and many releases. Some, such as the pivotal Body Horror and Polaris (both released by Utech in 2013), grabbed me right away. Much of the band’s work in between those releases and this one, however, has seemed like a study of extended tones and drum repetitions, sometimes in collaboration with other musicians (Nick Millevoi, Colin Webster, others). Although some of these albums really work (such as Worship the Sun), many give the impression that these guys have a big vision that they are searching for but have not yet realized. Ghosts might be that realization.

The two tracks on Ghosts, aptly titled “Bone Hill” and “Death Bell” deploy many of the same ideas as the band’s earlier releases. There are loud and tempestuous. It is often difficult to figure out if Kokke or Aquarius provides the propulsion. Both, members of the group, however, are slightly more restrained than on previous efforts. This is not quite the free blow-grindcore hybrid characteristic of Kokke’s and Aquarius’ early work. Instead, it is relentless, almost punitively so, but measured. It peaks just a few seconds into the first track, then transforms that peak into a panicked plateau." - Nick Ostrum / The Free Jazz Collective

Love Of The Farthest – Destratification CD

Rites for self-made psychedelic cyborgs

A blessing for those who find meaning in cataclysm

Tune in drop out / Nothing left inside / Reassemble

For fans of Éliane Radigue and Corrupted

Dead Neanderthals – Blood Rite cassette

"A slow, crawling, eldritch horror, direct from the nightmare world. The absence of rhythm allows them to concentrate on hearing and reacting to each other without worrying about time, creating an immersive world of pure sound that fills the room as easily as it empties out your skull."

Suzuki Junzo / Tetuzi Akiyama – Evaporation Of Holy Water LP

Evaporation of Holy Water is Utech Records' first release from the duo of Suzuki Junzo and Tetuzi Akiyama. Her artistic expressions investigate animal dignity, the intrinsic brutality of nature, and the effects of human encroachment. Man, too, is animal, and Trice conveys this truth through a visual language of discomfort, fragility, and grace. Her work reminds us of the urgency of threatened landscapes, the contrivance of freedom, and the exquisiteness of a single still moment.

Various - Subliminal Skull Palace, Vol. 5 comp CD

Utech Records is happy to present SUBLIMINAL SKULL PALACE VOL. 5, a fifth lengthy excursion into guitar music from Japan. The vast sprawl of ‘Territories’ has been streamlined into a more intimate and less sonically overwhelming realm, and the multiple contributors of that record are nowhere to be heard, replaced instead by a new addition to the Locrian core of Terence Hannum and André Foisy – Steven Hess, also of Pan American and Ural Umbro. In some ways, ‘Territories’ could be viewed as a slight deviation from the path set out upon with ‘Drenched Lands’, with ‘The Crystal World’ being a more logical progression from that first full-length – not to detract from ‘Territories’, of course.

From the outset, Locrian create an all-enveloping sound-world of their own and draw the listener in, holding them like a fly in amber. ‘Triumph Of Elimination’ immerses the listener in a night-time ocean of echoed clicks, ominous humming drones and ghostly chiming. A rising hum on the edge of hearing alerts us that some…thing is drawing near, which announces itself with a metallic bathyscapthic shrieking. The entirety of all that came before cycles around upon itself and creates a tangible aura of dread that gradually dies away whilst still leaving the feeling of being unsettled.

Those ghostly chimes carry over into ‘At Night’s End’, to be joined by a distant vocal not unlike a slurred throat-singer, amping up that feeling of oncoming dread. A plethora of tiny sounds pool together over the minutes, building to a gliding, throbbing percussive stomp that winds its way through a primordial soup of humming drone and metallic chime. The vocal drone is brought further to the fore, adding a baroque feel to the track. By this point, escape is impossible, as one is so immersed in the dark hypnotic shimmer that thoughts of anything else seem futile.

‘The Crystal World’ itself insinuates into the ears like a burrowing worm of black, buzzing thrum garlanded with delicate filigrees of delayed fluttering, like some ghostly undersea insect. Punctuated by bursts of kit percussion and a somewhat Fripp-esque sustained guitar, the tone is at once alien and elegiac.

‘Pathogens’ is a low-key hum that sets the hairs on end and a processed, distant howl, underscored by subsonics and pulsing drums. The sound of a radio playing Andrew Cyrille being detuned and hurled into the Marianis Trench.

That luminous sea-bottom darkness becomes fully tangible with ‘Obsidian Facades’, as the tortured and torturous howling of the damned is picked up by that radio and broadcast into the void. The crushing depths make their effects felt on the track as coruscating static is wrung from the deeply compressed sounds on display. It seems that no light can escape from these depths, this darkness, until an otherworldly melody begins as the other sounds unravel, degrade and break apart under pressure. The core of this melodic figure snakes into ‘Elevators And Depths’, the final track on Disc One, strummed on an acoustic guitar and wreathed in otherworldly female vocal echoes before being opened out WIDE into a vast expanse of sonic landscape that still manages to remain claustrophobic despite its huge topography. An insistently slothful drumbeat drives the listener across this sonic territory, through the glassy drone of violins, the humming of accordions and the ever-twining electronics, until a wall is reached and we can go no further." - Paul Robertson / The Sleeping Shaman

Flöjter – Paris Blow CD

World premiere music from new duo Flöjter – Delphine Joussein and Mats Gustafsson.

Flöjter's debut album, recorded live at La Dynamo, Banlieues Bleues in Paris, explores audio landscapes never heard before.

Delphine and Mats have been collaborating in Fire! Tony and I have Latinx roots, and have individually delved into various anthropological research concerning the whitewashing and repression of traditions and culture of the Caribbean diaspora. Drumming was and is a deeply social and cultural act in these territories, tied to rites of passage and cultural rememory, and embedded in the collective experience. I wanted to co-create something with Tony to revere these things.

I improvised on traditional rhythms of the Caribe and coastlines of Central and South America as core material. Tony and I subsequently dismantled their context to create dense sonic fields and indiscernible rhythmic matrices. For me, it’s an act of resistance and acknowledgement of silenced ancestors. Perhaps it’s a metaphor for the masking of my Puerto Rican identity in order to live a relatively safe life in the United States.

My story pales in comparison to many others’ experiences, and I acknowledge that. Glance at the news, witness the illegal abduction, detention, dislocation and murder of our brothers and sisters. Your brothers and sisters. We continue to live in a world of suppression and censure. Of erasure.

– Frank Rosaly

My contributions were also made through drumming, but rather than using microphones like Frank did, I turned to sensors, allowing the physical gestures of playing to trigger both direct and indirect sonic responses. This method gave rise to an uncanny rendering of a familiar principle in Caribbean traditions: the multiplicity of drums and the voices they carry. I wanted that presence to be unmistakable, especially in contrast to the dominant norms of Western music, where percussion is often distilled down to a single drummer, a single kit, a single line of thought.

Much of this work was shaped by my long-standing reflections on the banning of drums in colonial Cuba—a deliberate act of anti-Black and anti-Indigenous violence. Their suppression wasn’t just about silencing music; it was about cutting off a lifeline of communication, protest, and spirit. In many ways, this historical repression echoes the pressures I feel today in these diasporic spaces—spaces that often demand assimilation, legibility, and compliance with hegemonic structures.

– Tony Lugo

Dosing Deities – The Long Dissolve CD

Musicians, artists, and designers Kevin Gan Yuen (Sutekh Hexen, EERIÆRMOR, etc.), and Jamie Lawson (Sistra, Ex-Corpse) were asked by Utech Records to initiate a long-distance, cross-border collaboration.
