Ainara LeGardon – We Once Wished LP

We Once Wished is the album Ainara LeGardon had always wanted to make. Perhaps she didn't even know it, but it was stirring deep within her. Twenty years have passed since she first stepped onto a stage, and the path she has followed since then has culminated in her most essential and compelling work.

It is now, upon signing with Aloud Music, that a sense of urgency permeates her music and unrestrained electricity takes hold of her sound.  All this without losing any of her defining characteristics: the pulsating whisper, the continuous tension, and a Spartan approach that always ends up delivering far more than countless hollow exercises.

Once again, Paco Jiménez's hands are responsible for shaping the sound through a production that adapts to the needs of each composition, raw and polished at the same time. And Ainara is the driving force behind the imagery of an album that speaks of futile desires, of the most fervent Carpe Diem, and of exorcising demons through a thirsty search for experiences that leave their mark.

She herself, in addition to returning to her guitar and vocal duties, recorded most of the deep bass lines for the occasion, imbuing the final result with extraordinary firmness and cohesion.  The invaluable addition of Héctor Bardisa (The Grave Yacht Club) on drums to her always concise but diligent band cannot be overlooked, providing the powerful beat that the collection of songs demanded.  Also noteworthy is the diverse list of collaborators: Rubén Martínez from Tokyo Sex Destruction, Hannot Mintegia from Audience, and the New Yorker Jason Victor, a touring member of Steve Wynn's Miracle 3 and Willard Grant Conspiracy.

The point of reference remains herself, and the raw, gritty sound—especially now, when bland and insipid music is being inexplicably celebrated—is the undisputed protagonist. With a contemporary approach and a vision that champions the muscular transcendence of the nineties, We Once Wished is a brilliant, courageous, and powerful creation.
