Epistemology is the study of knowledge. On their debut album for doubleplusgood Minneapolis’s own Self-Evident have crafted a finely tuned and complex album examining what we know and how we’ve come to know it. This tightly wound trio seamlessly ebbs and flows from one genre to the next, recalling at times the indie jazz of Karate and Tortoise, the rhythmic interplay of Faraquet and Don Cabellero, and Shellac’s dissonance.

Formed in Minneapolis, MN in the summer of 1997, self-evident are a three piece who have developed a precise and methodical sound all their own. The band blends elements of math rock, indie jazz, and punk, while singer/guitarist Conrad Mach’s sparse vocals serve to compliment and bring structure to instrumental parts. After releasing two full lengths and an ep with Doom Nibbler and Blue Worm Records, “Epistemology” is self-evident’s debut for doubleplusgood records. In it, self-evident have crafted a finely tuned, complex album, that showcases the band in peak form. Recorded in 2004 at the Mousetrap in Norman, OK by Carl Amburn (Traindodge, Roma 79), “Epistemology”is receiving significant airplay on college radio and overseas.
