"Providence is home to a variety of unique bands who utilize a peculiar combination of genres and styles. It’s one of the many traits that makes the scene in “The Creative Capital” stand out, but there are a few musical entities who take this approach to a whole different level. One example is Sliimo, a quartet consisting of vocalist and guitarist Michael Heimall, synth player and bassist Sam Houston, guitarist Spencer Davis, and drummer Paul Dechichio that combines sci-fi fandom with heavy metal. This dynamic is the catalyst for wicked cool tunes with the latest example being “Radiation Sun Burst,” which is officially out today (August 19). The tune is off a self-titled album that’s due to be out on September 11 via Dechichio’s label at Tor Johnson Records.

The upcoming release was done in DIY fashion and the same can be said for the music video accompanying the new single. The instrumentation is tightly knit as well while Heimall’s vocals supply a proper level of intensity.

“This new record reintroduces us as a galactic sci fi band who travels our galaxy, The Kyper System, in search of adventure,” Heimall says. “This is the first album where we have written our own lore while showing off a new vocal style and different rhythms than our previous two releases. ‘Radiation Sun Burst’ is very pointedly about a ship escaping the irradiated blast of an exploding star and also being chased by an enemy vessel. The music video, like the record, was made entirely by ourselves. We built a wall with some of our amps as a backdrop and filmed at a high frame rate but played the song at 1.5–2x speed, then we slowed the footage down to match the actual speed of the song.”

“Our hand placement and my lips line up to the beat of the music but everything around us with clothing, facial expressions, and everything else all move in slow motion,” he adds. “We thought this would invoke the weightlessness of space. Our lighting choice was mostly for the aesthetic, but to reason it into our lore, our ship, when necessary, will push energy towards its sub-light drive by pulling it away from other systems on ship, often lights are the first to go.
